THE only remaining key to my 1996 Ford Laser has worn to the point it will open only one door, and the ignition can be tricky. A locksmith tells me this is common in soft alloy keys. The solution is to have a new key cut from code, but Ford says the dealer must provide the code, and the dealer says he can't find it. The dealer wants to change all locks and the ignition at my expense . . . many hundreds of dollars. What do you think?
WE CONTACTED Ford on your behalf and it has responded with the following, which should fix your problem. Unfortunately Ford doesn't have the code for the key of your vehicle. However, its service technicians advise that if a locksmith removes the door lock (a relatively simple job), they can cut you a new key to the same specifications as the one you now have.
