Idle engine in Commodore Sv6

Last year the engine in my 2005 VZ Commodore SV6 began to idle funny and I haven't been able to get it fixed. Sometimes there is a very loud clattering sort of sound that usually goes away when I rev it. My mechanic is struggling for an answer, while the local Holden dealer says it's just the timing chain. I don't know what's going on, I have the feeling I might have to resort to a new engine. What do you reckon?

It does sound like a loose timing chain as the Holden dealer has suggested. We've had another report of a broken timing chain on an Alloytec engine and the result in that case was a badly damaged engine, so I would act quickly and have the chain checked and replaced if worn or loose.
