I HAVE a two-year-old Holden that is due for its 60,000km service. It has had all its services from the Holden dealership where we brought it. However, it is quite a drive and each service is getting ridiculously expensive. They tell you it has to be serviced at a Holden dealership to keep the three-year warranty. Is this correct? We have a good independent mechanic nearby who used to work at Holden. He also costs half the price. Can I take my car to him without losing my warranty?
YES you can. The Trade Practices Act prevents carmakers from forcing owners to have their cars serviced by a factory dealer.
