Fuel injector life expectancy

I notice from reading your column that quite a few cars need fuel injectors changed. Could you please tell me what is the expected life of an injector under metropolitan driving conditions? The reason I ask is because I own a 1975 BMW 2002tii which has a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel-injection system, and my mechanic says that he would not tamper with it. Apparently the injection system on my car has not been touched since the car was new, yet it has never given me any trouble. I understand that modern electronic fuel-injection systems are more sophisticated and fuel efficient than my old system, yet how much of the savings in fuel are lost by having to replace fuel injectors at $700 a pop? I sometimes wonder whether the complexity of today's cars is more trouble than they are worth.

There is no "expected life" of injectors as such, but it's clear that some cars are needing new injectors earlier than in past times. Your mechanical fuel-injection system is quite different to today's systems.
