Fix the caddy problem

THE brake life of Carl Rollings' 2008 VW Caddy (carsGuide, Nov 13) is unacceptable. New-car buyers have the right to expect components such as brakes to be fit for use. Clearly those on the Caddy are not. They should have been replaced free under warranty. I assume Caddy owners are up for about $600 every 30,000km as well as the usual running costs, and then there's the continuing cost of replacing the front brakes every 40,000km at probably the same cost or higher. These extra running costs make the Caddy an expensive vehicle to own and I can't imagine that VW gets many repeat purchasers. The front rotors on my 2004 Fairmont Ghia needed replacing at about 45,000km and I complained to the dealer and to Ford that the cost should be covered by warranty on the basis the rotors were not fit for purpose. After some argy-bargy, Ford gave me a certificate for the next service to be provided free and I was happy with this. Caddy owners should be putting pressure on VW to improve the durability of brake components. At the very least, brake repairs should be covered under warranty. I would pursue this through Consumer Affairs to force VW to pay if they won't cover the brake repairs under warranty.

IT'S unusual to have the rear brakes wearing out before the front, which do most of the stopping work, so I'd first be making sure the brake system is functioning correctly. If it is, there is good reason to pressure VW to replace the worn components under warranty, and you're correct that all manufacturers, carmakers and others, have a duty to provide a product that is fit for the purpose it's being sold for.
