Engine braking in an auto

For 35 years I have driven manual cars, but due to arthritis in my hips I have recently opted for a 2005 Mitsubishi Magna ES automatic. While driving my manuals I just had to lift my foot off the accelerator and the car would start to slow down and then you go down through the gears to eventually use the brake to come to a full stop. This does not happen in the automatic, I seem to be forever standing on the brakes just to slow down, taking your foot off the accelerator has little or no effect, even if I move the selector to a lower gear manually there is very little engine braking. I find it very annoying.

There's very little engine braking available with an automatic transmission, and with the desire to achieve the best possible fuel economy there have been changes to the transmissions, gearing, torque converters etc. that have further reduced the effect.
