Holden Commodore 2007: Dash failure

Nine kilometres after having the 50,000 km service done on our 2007 VE Commodore at a local mechanic's the 'engine hot' light came on. The mechanic started the car a few times without waiting for a system check and put coolant in the radiator. After that the dash did not work at all. He had no idea why, but told us to return it the next day, which we did. There was an airlock and he had to do a system override, which he did. We then drove for about 15 km and the dash went off, but the engine light stayed on. All the mechanic could say is take it to Holden. Now Holden say we need a new dashboard, which costs $1000. Holden said it's normal for a dashboard to just stop working even if it's only six years old. Where do I go from here, I'm on the carers pension and cannot afford to pay for other people's mistakes.

If you feel the problem was caused by the mechanic you need to go back to him and negotiate a settlement that satisfies your complaint. It would be wise to get another opinion before approaching the mechanic, so you're sure of your ground.
