When I opened the boot on the 2004 Ford Territory I have just bought the main top driver’s side hinge snapped leaving the boot hanging half in the air and on the ground. I took it to a Ford dealership and was told to pay $140 by Ford head office to have an inspection with a report and quote provided. The dealership did not charge me; they removed the struts, as they could not close it again, and told me not to open again. They told me to go to a private panel shop for a quote, as they could not provide me with one. Is this common? Is this a metal fatigue safety recall incident? They say it’s a moving part and a 10-year-old car, so there is no coverage.
It’s not a recall situation, recalls are mostly about safety and a broken hinge does not constitute a safety concern. It is a 10-year-old car and sometimes things fail on old cars. I would take the dealer’s advice and have a panel shop quote on repairing it.
