Brake fright

PETER Cumming (Carsguide, January 2) writes about the BA Falcon's brake failure. For 3 1/2 years I drove a BA wagon. In December 2007 a front brake hose split without warning and I had no brakes at all. It was very scary. What concerns me is the so-called split braking system, supposedly designed so you can't lose all braking if a hose fails, didn't work. The local Ford dealer did say there had been a problem with front brake hoses, but no recall was made. It would appear to be long overdue because someone will be seriously injured or killed. Of course, now all the BAs are out of warranty, I guess we can expect Ford to sit on its hands and do nothing.

AS PART of Australian Design Rules covering braking, a carmaker has to meet certain criteria for such a failure, but what I am hearing from readers is the Ford loses all braking. If that is the case it couldn't meet ADR requirements. As if that's not worrying enough, Ford seems reluctant to do a recall.
