I HAVE a 1999 Holden Astra City and the timing belt has gone and is going to cost me $2500-$4000 to fix. My Astra has been serviced at the same dealer, or subsidiary, since it was bought from the only owner who had it before me. It had 70,000km on it when I bought it and now has 115,000km almost three years later. I am checking to see if the timing belt has been changed before, but I was wondering if you know when Holden changed its recommendation on changing the timing belt at 60,000km instead of 120,000km before I go back to the dealer or Holden.
I BELIEVE it was in 2001 or so. Holden dealers were notified of the change with an instruction to change the belt when the cars came in for their 60,000km service, so some owners might not know it was done. Similarly, if someone other than a Holden dealer was servicing a car the change might not have been made. It's a warning to Astra buyers to check for belt changes before they drive away. A belt failure is expensive.
