Ask Smithy Xtra Reverse lights on VW Jetta

I have been unable to see whilst backing my 10-month-old VW Jetta at night, so I asked my wife to stand at the rear of the car whilst I put it in to reverse to try and work out what was wrong. We discovered that there is one reverse light, but it is located on the rear passenger?s side, which is useless for the driver. I contacted VW Australia thinking that being a European car the reverse light might have been overlooked and not changed over to the driver?s side for the Australian market. Their answer is as follows "We can confirm that your vehicle is wired correctly and meets all of the Australian Design Rules regulations". I cannot understand that this would be correct, as I have never had a vehicle without a backing light on the driver?s side. I have been backing blind at nights. Your comments please.

We contacted VW for a response to your criticism and this is what we were told: “The reverse light is there for other road users to see that you are reversing, there is no requirement for it to be positioned on a particular side of the vehicle. The reason there is (only) one is that the other side is taken up by the fog light.” Perhaps you should try turning the fog light on when reversing at night!
