CATL has unveiled a new Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) battery capable of charging in rapid time in response to BYD’s recent developments. The third generation Shenxing battery takes just 60 seconds to charge from 10 to 35 per cent, under four minutes to charge to 80 per cent and under seven minutes charging to 98 per cent, trumping BYD's LFP unit. CATL also said the battery is able to perform strongly at temperatures as low as -30-degrees, charging up to 98 per cent in nine minutes.This in part due to the battery achieving the world’s lowest internal resistance for fast charging at 0.25 milliohms, 50 per cent less than industry average. Internal resistance is one of the key issues preventing rapid charging times, as the heat generated from the transfer of electricity slows down the overall process. CATL is by far the biggest electric vehicle battery manufacturer in the world, producing nearly half of total batteries, including for brands such as Tesla. Ultra fast charging has been the latest battleground for carmakers, particularly in China as they look to expand their networks and battery capacities.BYD’s second generation LFP battery can charge from 10-70 per cent in five minutes, and to 97 per cent in nine minutes.This means CATL’s unit betters its Chinese rival. BYD has recently been boasting of its megawatt fast charging, which will come to Australia this year, offering 1500kW to replenish the Blade 2 batteries. It is not just the raw numbers where CATL has looked to improve the durability of its third-gen battery, in addition to its performance in cold temperatures. According to CATL, the battery maintains a state of health above 90 per cent even after 1000 ultra-fast charging cycles. The battery’s heat management system also facilitates ultra-fast charging even without specialised charging infrastructure.CATL’s battery has pulse rapid heating to increase the temperature quickly and enable high-speed charging regardless of the charging pile.The brand has further introduced a different type of charging infrastructure, which means batteries can either be charged or utilise battery swapping functionality. CATL continues to explore other battery solutions, such as sodium-ion and solid-state.

The Chinese domestic version of the Atto 3, dubbed the Yuan Plus, will debut at the Beijing Motor Show later this week, and the company has now shared some core details after its completely overhauled interior was leaked recently.The new-generation car grows significantly in dimensions, from 4455mm long to 4665mm long, essentially making it closer to a mid-size SUV than a small one. It is also taller and wider, with a longer wheelbase than before.Many more significant changes are hidden beneath, swapping from a front-drive architecture to a rear-wheel drive one, with a more powerful motor and larger batteries than before.Its newly-upgraded electrical architecture allows the car to be compatible with BYD’s much-anticipated new ‘flash charging’ technology, which the brand says allows it to charge from 10 - 70 per cent in five minutes.It also gets two new battery sizes, either a 57.54kWh unit or a 68.55kWh unit (up from the current 50kWh and 60kWh options) with correspondingly higher driving range (either 540km or 630km compared to the current 410km/430km).Design-wise the new-generation car shares some of its motifs with the newer Sealion 8, with new wheel designs and sunken doorhandles, while maintaining the overall visage of BYD’s ‘Dynasty’ design language. The leaked interior shows an even deeper departure, debuting a new two-spoke steering wheel, larger non-rotating touchscreen panel, new digital dash and a more minimalistic approach to the cabin overall. It swaps the dumbbell vent designs for more traditional slot-type ones, while even the doorhandles are more traditional.Although this completely new-generation offering may seem like a good fit for our market, to capitalise on BYD’s exploding electric vehicle popularity, CarsGuide understands it is more likely we will instead receive a more heavily updated version of the current Atto 3, which has just debuted in the UK.Dubbed the Atto 3 Evo, this deeply facelifted model shares the current car’s dimensions and overall styling, with a mild nip-and-tuck to its front and rear bumpers, but unseen changes also make this version of the car a significant departure.Underneath, it also swaps to be primarily rear-driven instead of front-wheel drive, for the first time offers an all-wheel drive variant, and also features a larger 74.8kWh battery with an 800-volt architecture.This unlocks up to 510km of driving range, and DC charging at up to 220kW, a huge improvement over the current car’s 88kW.Inside, the Atto 3 Evo also gets an overhaul, but not as dramatic as it is for the Chinese-market version.The dumbbell-style vents are maintained, as are the odd rotary doorhandles and even the guitar strings for the doorcard bottle holders, but the rest of the interior gets an upgrade, with a new steering wheel, simplified centre console, upgraded door trims, and a larger digital instrument cluster.The fellow right-hand drive UK market gets almost entirely the same line-up as in Australia, just without the Shark 6 and Sealion 8, giving the Evo a much stronger chance to head Down Under.Expect to learn more about the future of the Atto 3 and more details on BYD’s future plans at the Beijing Motor Show imminently.

BYD has confirmed domestic pricing and specification details for its updated Sealion 05 compact crossover-style SUV prior to the electrified newcomer’s public debut at this week’s Beijing motor show. Offered in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and pure-electric (BEV) form, the Sealion 05 measures just over 4.6 metres long (165 mm longer than the BYD Atto 3), close to 1.9m wide and around 1.6m tall.The DM-i PHEV version combines a 74kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with a single 120kW synchronous permanent magnet electric motor and two battery options - 26.6kWh and 34.3kWh - delivering (CLTC) EV-only ranges of 220km and 305km, respectively.The DM-i’s claimed fuel consumption on the combined (urban/extra-urban) cycle is 3.1L/100km, the car’s 65-litre fuel tank facilitating an overall range in excess of 2100km (CLTC).Alternately, the pure-electric Sealion 05 EV is available with two motor options; the first being a rear-mounted 200kW unit powered by a 57.6kWh LFP battery delivering a CLTC range of 540km.A higher output version of the motor is fitted to upper grades, sending 240kW to the rear wheels with a 68.6kWh battery good for a 630km range.BYD’s new ‘flash charging’ tech is onboard, generating a 10 to 97 percent top-up in just nine minutes.Standard feature highlights include a built-in fridge and an 8.8-inch instrument cluster joined by a 12.8-inch central media screen on lower grades and a 15.6-inch ‘floating’ display on premium variants. All versions of the car feature seven airbags with ‘DiPilot 100’ ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) tech at a minimum with optional Lidar-based ‘DiPilot 300’ adding ‘Navigate On Autopilot’ (NOA) functionality as well as ‘DiSus-C’ semi-active suspension with continuous damping control.Boot space on the DM-i hybrid is a generous 650 litres with all seats upright, that number shrinking to 600 litres on the EV, although the latter features a 10-litre front boot.Five versions of the Sealion 05 DM-i are available in the Chinese domestic market, ranging from ¥97,900 (~$20,000) for the entry-level 220 Starter to ¥127,900 (~$26,100) for the 305 Smart Navigator.And three Sealion 05 EV grades range between the 540 Navigator at ¥119,900 (~$24,500) and 630 Smart Navigator flagship at ¥145,900 (~$29,800). CarsGuide contacted BYD Australia for comment on the Sealion 05’s potential for sale in the local market and a spokesperson said, "We do not have visibility of that vehicle on our product radar."

BYD’s Atto 3 mid-sized SUV is getting a cabin redesign which will have a more conservative look resembling the interiors of the rest of the model’s in the brand’s line-up according to leaked spy images.The spy shots surfaced in China and show a more toned-down cabin in the Atto 3 with the curved and free-flowing feel of the current model’s dashboard replaced with horizontal lines that bring a broader, more refined look.Gone, too, are the quirky, circular elements with the rotating interior door handles replaced by more conventional pull type. The gill-like central air vent design has been switched to regular slat styling and fans of the guitar-string door pockets will be sad to hear they're now gone in favour of regular plastic-moulded versions.BYD will likely launch a new version of the Atto 3 in China next month. Along with this redesigned interior the vehicle will also have new-generation batteries along with rear-wheel drive variants.Whether or not this Atto 3 from the spy images will be sold in Australia is not clear.What appears more likely is that Australia will get the version of the Atto 3 which went on sale this month in the United Kingdom. Known as the Atto 3 Evo it's an updated version which has the same cabin as our current car but with overhauled engineering - the biggest change being a switch from front-wheel drive to rear- and all-wheel drive.A larger 74.8kWh battery in the Atto 3 Evo gives a longer driving range of 510km and 800V architecture allows DC changing at up to 220kW. Australia’s current Atto 3 is offered only in FWD with two batteries - the largest being 60.48kWh with a maximum DC charging rate of 88kW.Power output is also much higher in the UK versions with the top grade producing up to 330kW. The most powerful Australian Atto 3 variant makes 150kW. CarsGuide reached out to BYD Australia for clarity regarding which Atto 3 would arrive locally - the Evo sold in the UK or the Chinese Atto 3 with redesigned cabin - but was told it was too early to speculate.Given the approval compliance documents for the import of a BYD Atto 3 with an output of 330kW were published in February this year on the Australian Federal Government's road vehicles standards website it appears likely the Evo is coming here soon.

BYD is on a roll with unprecedented growth and a knack for innovation consumers didn’t know they wanted.But how does its least-expensive small SUV EV, the new Atto 2, stack up?Offered in two grades from $31,990 (all are before on-road costs) for the Dynamic and $35,990 for the Premium as tested here, the Kia Seltos-sized Atto 2 screams its value proposition from the rooftops, given the low pricing, high specification and family-friendly proportions.However, the BYD delivers less power at 130kW, a smaller battery at 51.3kWh and a lower battery range of up to 345km (all figures quoted are WLTP) than its immediate competition.For instance, Chery’s Jaecoo J5 EV with 150kW and 58.9kWh battery starts from where the Atto 2 leaves off at $35,990, but boasts a 402km range, while its 150kW E5 (previously Omoda) Urban cousin with a 61kWh battery and 430km range is just $1000 extra.Still, none can touch the Dynamic’s $32K starting price. And that’s no Les Mis spec either, with keyless entry/start (driver’s side only though), rear camera and parking sensors, climate control air-con, rain-sensing wipers, 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and digital radio. But cloth would be nice rather than the standard vinyl trim.There’s also a decent wedge of Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) tech, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.Paying $4.0K for the Premium’s 360-degree camera set-up, 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, heated/vented front seats with powered adjustability for the driver, an audio upgrade, glass roof (thankfully with sunshade) and roof rails are nice rather than must-haves.It also scores a trusted tyre brand (Kuhmo) in lieu of mysterious Westlake items. Speaking of which, neither offer a spare wheel. That’s unacceptable in Australia.Which is a pity because it is clear BYD’s engineers created a compact SUV that is stupendously user-friendly, starting with its effortless ease of entry/egress afforded by big doors and a high roofline.After taking in the airy and attractive cabin presentation, you’ll also likely be impressed by the various and very-welcome switches on what is an invitingly clean and high-quality dash.The layout is still heavily screen-based, but at least most of the oft-used functions have hard buttons to press. They’re neatly arranged and natural to learn, meaning the Atto 2 sidesteps the alien feel of most other software-based interiors from China. And when using the electronic displays, they’re slick, responsive and logical.Indeed, most of the touchpoints look and feel good, from the big cupholders and inclined phone charger pad in the driver’s eye line, to the simple column shifter and equally delightful detailing that’s prevalent in a lot of the complementing textures deployed throughout.BYD has also looked after the big stuff, starting with a commanding driving position that helps with good all-around vision, ample (electronic) instrumentation, strong ventilation, a large glove box and all the storage you’re ever likely to ask for.Reflecting its role as a family car (or ride share staple), the lofty rear seat is equally complete in execution, with unimpeded access, stacks of space even for taller adults, a pleasantly-angled fixed backrest and sufficient (outboard) cushion support.If you’re into box ticking, this BYD’s got you covered out back, with a folding centre armrest containing cupholders, USB A and C ports, a (single) rear vent, map pockets with segmented device storage, overhead lights and grab handles. Clearly, the Atto 2’s been designed from the inside out.Further behind is a practical, sensible boot area that’s a cinch to load and unload, with the somewhat high-set floor at least hiding extra storage underneath for cables and such. Capacity is rated at 380 litres, or 1320L with the 60/40 backrests folded down.Push the start button and select Drive, and the BYD continues to stand out amongst its Chinese compatriots by being a surprisingly decent drive.Depending on which mode you’re in, performance ranges from adequate to energetic, with the front wheels chirping in 'Sport' mode if you’re in enough of a hurry. BYD says 0-100km/h takes 7.9 seconds.Power delivery is smooth, quiet and assured, as you’d expect from an EV, with our Premium’s Kuhmo rubber keeping things under control in heavy rain conditions when tested. Speaking of which, our trip computer showed we averaged around 16.3kWh/100km during our time with the BYD, which seems about average.The Atto 2’s steering is also set up to feel light for low-speed parking ease, yet precise enough when the turns become tighter, displaying notable levels of roadholding grip. Feedback from the wheel is a bit too muted for enthusiasts to get excited about, and there is some rattle from the rack through bumpy bits, but the suspension (struts up front and a torsion beam out back) does a good job isolating its occupants from the rough stuff. So far, so good.But push on harder, say through a faster corner, and over a rougher patch of bitumen, and the soft suspension starts to feel wallowy, with a disappointing heaving motion that discourages any sort of sporty driving.Meanwhile, the ADAS will keep trying to apply steering correction. The little stabs of pull become incredibly tiresome, with the steering feeling sticky and artificial, instead of smooth and fluid, on a straight road at speed as a result. A driver should not have to turn off the safety functions to avoid fighting off tiring, distracting electronic interference.Great around the suburbs, the Atto 2 thus is flawed as a highway cruiser. The solution is an Aussie road tune. A back-to-back drive in the far-more-sophisticated Kia EV3 will reveal what’s possible.That said, the BYD is 33 per cent cheaper and that will be more than enough for most EV buyers to put up with any dynamic inadequacies.

There’s a huge Chinese carmaker cage fight going on right now between 22 different brands in Australia and not all will survive, but knowing what we know here’s five we think will beat the others to become Aussie favourites for a long time.Before we start, let's have a few ground rules — Chinese brands such as MG, GWM and LDV aren’t included in this because they are already established brands with large dealer networks and their future in Australia is almost certainly assured.The brands we’re really focussing on here are the more recent arrivals who have made massive inroads in a relatively short period of time.Here’s the big five in no particular order.Chinese superstar brand BYD knew its way into Aussie hearts when it arrived in 2022 quickly winning us over with electric SUVs such as the small Atto 3 and mid-size Sealon 7, and the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute.BYD has gone from battery maker to world’s biggest electric car producer and continues to impress by offering outstanding EVs at low prices.March saw BYD entering the top 3 best-selling car brands in Australia and is now a major threat to established car makers such as Honda, Mitsubishi and Nissan.There is no doubt that as BYD's lineup grows and its presence solidifies here, the company will be around in Australia for a long time to come.Geely is a giant — it makes three million cars a year globally — and it brought that enormous manufacturing firepower to Australia in 2025 and launched its EX5 mid-sized SUV.Slow to arrive, Geely appears to be taking its time, but has since launched the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV and has the small electric EX2 SUV coming soon.Geely may be gigantic but it needs to hurry up, because rival Chinese brands appear to be throwing everything they have into our market. Speaking of throwing everything it has into our market, Chery has made the comeback of all comebacks launching five models since returning to Australia in 2023 after an eight-year hiatus.The Tiggo 4 small hybrid SUV is Chery's biggest selling model but the brand will soon launch its off-road diesel hybrid ute soon, which could become the brand's most successful vehicle and potentially beating the Ford Ranger at its own game.The most impressive part of Chery’s comeback has been the multitude of sub-brands it’s in the process of bringing here such as Jaecoo, Jetour, Lepas and now Freelander.Zeekr is owned by Geely, but we’re singling it out here because it’s seriously outperforming its parent company in Australia.Zeekr arrived here in 2025 with its little X SUV and then the 009 people mover, but it wasn’t until it launched the mid-size 7X SUV that the brand took off. The 7X is now the best-selling premium mid-sized SUV in Australia.Coming soon from Zeekr will be the 8X and 9X plug-in hybrid SUVs. Watch this space, we're expecting big things. Denza is BYD’s high-performance and luxury sub-brand and despite only setting up shop here in 2025 has launched strongly with the B5 and B8 plug-in hybrid off road SUVs.Denza isn’t just doing off-road luxury vehicles it also has the D9 people mover and the upcoming Z9 GT - an electric wagon with a range of 1000km and monstrous power and speed.Denza may not outsell BYD but it will offer a more premium and sporty alternative for buyers also in the market for a Zeekr.

It was not so long ago plug-in hybrids looked to have found the middle ground between electrified power and long driving range. PHEV power experienced more growth than any other powertrain type in 2025 - and by some significant margin. It was up by more than 130 per cent compared to 2024.Leading the charge for PHEV power is the BYD Shark 6 ute, one of the few utes to experience sales growth last year. Its 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and dual electric motors provided outstanding fuel economy (when the battery was charged) capturing attention despite modest towing and carrying capacity. Most other brands have also jumped on the PHEV pathway, especially in the SUV segment. However, it now looks like a change might be on the horizon, as fully-electric sales continue to rise and at an even faster rate.There is a combination of factors likely contributing to this new set of circumstances in the new car sales space.While PHEVs offer incredible fuel efficiency, EVs do not need any fuel and obviously have far superior electric-only driving range with electric-only driving range remaining one of the biggest selling points for PHEVs. This is becoming an increasingly relevant point for buyers due to the current scarcity and cost of fuel in Australia.One of the other key factors which could erode PHEV sales is the substantial improvement in driving range of electric cars. Most EVs now offer more than 400km before needing to be charged, and even then charging times have also rapidly improved, with most brands targeting a 30 minute-or-less fast charge time compared to an hour previously.Charging infrastructure has been seeing rapid investment in Australia in the past 12 months, with governments as well as major brands getting on board. Just this week, the New South Wales government announced $45 million of funding towards new public fast chargers as part of its ‘2026 NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy’, and this adds to the existing federal ARENA public funding for EV infrastructure.BYD has also confirmed it will bring its ‘Flash’ charging to Australia this year, removing barriers to charge speed usually imposed by the grid thanks to an inclusion of a high-voltage buffer battery.There is also the question of increasing accessibility to electric vehicles in Australia, with many becoming available at a more affordable price point. The BYD Atto 1, for example, is available from $23,990, before on-road costs, while the cheapest PHEV, also a BYD, the Sealion 5 is $10,000 more. This is more reflective of the types of vehicles in which PHEV set-ups are offered as opposed to electric cars. The most common PHEV car body type is SUVs, which targets family buyers and more car (size-wise, with two powertrains instead of one) costs you more money.And yet, the models surging the most in the sales charts are the fully electric Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X, which are both in that core mid-size family buyer segment.This combined with the early adopter phase for much of this technology ending and electrified cars becoming more mainstream will mean some buyers who don't have access to home charging, like those who live in units, might not be able to utilise the key benefits of a PHEV.Many of this wider-audience may value the range on offer from an EV, which will see them charge only once or twice a week as a benefit at such a competitive price-point, not having to worry about not being able to charge at home, and not needing to fuel up altogether. This is also an audience which predominantly buys small or mid-size SUVs.PHEVs then, may be destined to be relegated to only larger vehicles, like utes and three-row SUVs where battery electrics become less cost competitive.

BYD concedes it is still experiencing 'growing pains' in Australia, but insists a new $20 million investment will help shore up its fundamentals in keeping its customers' cars on the road.That's the word from BYD's local Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Collins, who says a massive dealership rollout will put the Chinese brand hot on the heels of Nissan, Ford and Toyota in terms of footprint, and which is backed by a massive investment in spare parts and warehousing.The paint is still drying on a new parts warehouse in Victoria, where Mr Collins says the brand has got $20m worth of parts housed and ready to send to dealers when required."I would say, right now, we're probably working harder on service, capacity, parts, supply, all those fundamentals," Mr Collins said."I guess the key points for me, by the middle of this year, we'll have 150 dealers. There are a couple of exceptions, but (almost) every one of those dealers will have full parts and service."We've just, six months ago, built a parts warehouse here in Melbourne, which is 20,000 square meters. We've got $20 million worth of parts sitting in it. We are not shy about stocking parts."We're working really hard to make the experience good. If the car was unfortunately off the road, to make it as short as possible."BYD has come under fire from some owners in Australia on blogs for lengthy delays for spare parts after mechanical issues or accidents, with Mr Collins conceding his brand has faced "growing pains"."I've been pretty open in saying it. With the volume of growth we've had, you know, we've had some growing pains and we haven't eliminated all of those as yet."But we've hired a lot of experienced people, we're putting better processes in place, and our dealer partners are really committed to it. So yeah, there's a lot of facets to it. It's a major challenge."

Two car brands could reshape the Australian car market.The EV transition is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, particularly in Australia, as fuel prices soar. This has allowed brands to capitalise on snatching EV market share to surge up the sales charts and claim established status.BYD has been leading the way on this front, with all six of its electric models sitting inside the top 15 best-selling EVs for March 2026. The brand has adopted a similar strategy to its previous domestic Chinese market success by offering cars at comparatively low prices to rivals. BYD seems to have cornered the budget EV market Down Under, with its Atto 1 hatch priced from $23,990 (before on-road costs). It also offers the bigger Dolphin hatch, which also starts at less than $30,000, before on-roads. This price competitiveness continues up the range, with only the Sealion 7 mid-size SUV, sitting above the $40,000 range. The other brand that could be threatening BYD’s EV crown is Zeekr, following a flying start to life in Australia. The 7X mid-size SUV has flown up the sales charts and was the third best-selling EV for March, following a much-anticipated launch late last year. The car is arguably breaking similar ground for Zeekr as the Atto 2 did for BYD when it launched in Australia in 2022.Zeekr is a sub-brand of major Chinese carmaker Geely, and has been expanding its presence Down Under after a slow start due to supply challenges.In addition to the 7X, it has the X small SUV and the 009 people mover, with plans to introduce further EVs in the future. Zeekr has already delivered more than 1800 EV units across its range so far this year.The federal government's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) is further benefiting these brands, as they can sell their credits to heavy polluting brands.BYD accumulated more than 6 million NVES credits for the 2025 performance period, and this gives the brand some serious bargaining power.Units can be traded with other carmakers who have accumulated liabilities under the scheme, which allows brands such as BYD that are in a strong position to potentially dictate terms. BYD could cover the entire liabilities for the 2025 NVES reporting period more than five times over. Zeekr is on the cards to pick up a strong NVES position for 2026 as the 7X sales increase, but the brand has already secured more than 250,000 units, despite selling less than 2000 cars last year.
