The BYD E6 was launched in 2010 as one of the world’s first purpose-built electric people movers. Designed as a five-seat MPV, it gained attention for its large battery pack and long claimed range, unusual for the time. Early production focused on taxi and ride-share fleets in China, with limited exports to markets such as the UK and Singapore.
Through the mid-2010s, the BYD E6 received steady upgrades to its drivetrain and battery technology. In 2016, the model was updated with improved lithium-iron-phosphate cells and revised styling. It was also sold under the Skywell E6 name in some regions, though BYD remained the primary brand in most markets. Despite modest private sales, the E6 built a reputation as a durable fleet vehicle.
Today, the BYD E6 remains in production as a fleet-focused electric MPV. The latest version, introduced in 2021, uses BYD’s Blade Battery and a single front motor. While its private buyer appeal is limited, the E6 continues to serve as a low-cost EV option for taxi and shuttle operators in global markets.
The line-up currently starts at $33,110 for the E6 GEN 2 GLX and ranges through to $39,380 for the range-topping E6 GEN 2 GLX.
