The BMW 8 Series was first launched in 1989 as the E31 coupe, designed to sit above the 6 Series. It brought advanced features for its time, including electronic drive-by-wire throttle and a V12 engine option. While praised for its design and technology, sales were limited, and BMW discontinued the model in 1999 without a direct replacement.

The nameplate returned in 2018 with the second-generation BMW 8 Series, replacing the 6 Series in global markets. Offered as a coupe, convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe, it featured turbocharged six-cylinder and V8 engines, with the flagship M8 delivering supercar-level performance. This generation aimed to broaden appeal by blending luxury touring with track-ready capability.

Today, the BMW 8 Series remains the brand’s grand tourer, sitting at the top of the range alongside the 7 Series sedan. Updated in 2022 with styling tweaks and new technology, it continues to compete with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Porsche 911.

The line-up currently starts at $194,000 for the 8 Series 40I M Sport Gran Coupe and ranges through to $212,600 for the range-topping 8 Series 40I M Sport.
