The Volvo S90 first appeared in 1996 as the renamed version of the outgoing Volvo 900 Series. It was positioned as the brand’s large luxury sedan, sharing much of its design and engineering with the V90 wagon. This first-generation model was short-lived, ending production in 1998 as Volvo focused on newer platforms under Ford ownership.
The S90 name returned in 2016 on a completely new model, replacing the ageing S80. Built on Volvo’s SPA architecture, it introduced a more modern design language, advanced safety features and a strong emphasis on technology. In some markets, long-wheelbase versions were offered, with the S90L gaining popularity in China where chauffeur-driven sedans were in high demand.
