The Volkswagen Atlas was first launched in 2017 as the brand’s largest SUV, designed mainly for North America. Built on the MQB platform, it sat above the Tiguan and was aimed at families needing a proper seven-seat layout. In other markets, including China, it was sold as the Volkswagen Teramont. Unlike many Volkswagens of the time, the Atlas was not developed with Europe in mind, reflecting VW’s push into the US SUV market.
The model received a mid-life update in 2021, which introduced sharper styling, a more modern interior, and improved driver assistance features. Engine options varied across markets, but the focus remained on petrol V6 and turbo four-cylinder power. Volkswagen also added the smaller five-seat Atlas Cross Sport, expanding the range and appealing to buyers who wanted a sportier take on the big SUV.
In 2023, the Volkswagen Atlas entered its second generation, keeping its focus on size, space and comfort. The latest version features revised styling, a more premium cabin, and updated infotainment technology. While still not sold in Australia, the Atlas continues to play a central role in Volkswagen’s North American and Chinese SUV line-ups, competing directly with models like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.
