The Toyota Tercel was Toyota’s first front-wheel-drive car, launched globally in 1978. It slotted below the Corolla as an affordable small car and was sold in some markets as the Toyota Corsa or Toyota Soluna. its reputation for reliability and low running costs made it popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The first-generation Tercel featured simple mechanicals and fuel-efficient engines. Later models introduced more body styles, including a four-door sedan and a five-door hatch. In 1983, Toyota added the quirky Tercel 4WD wagon, which gained a cult following thanks to its part-time four-wheel drive and surprisingly capable off-road manners.

Production ended in 1999 after five generations. By then, it had been replaced by models like the Echo and Yaris in most markets. The Tercel remains a reminder of Toyota’s no-fuss approach to small cars that just worked.

The line-up currently starts at $2,640 for the Tercel Dlx (4X4) and ranges through to $4,070 for the range-topping Tercel Dlx (4X4).
