The Toyota Stout first arrived in 1954 as Toyota’s first light-duty pickup. Known in Japan as the RK series, it was aimed at small businesses needing a simple workhorse. By the early 1960s it was exported to markets including Australia, where the Toyota Stout found a niche as a tough but affordable alternative to American utes.

The second generation launched in 1960 with a more modern cab and greater payload capacity. Later updates in 1963 and 1967 improved comfort and safety, helping the Toyota Stout compete with rivals like the Datsun 520. In North America it was often sold alongside the smaller Toyota Hilux, which would eventually overshadow it. Production ran into the late 1970s, with the Stout serving as a stepping stone for Toyota’s global ute strategy.

Today the Toyota Stout is best remembered as a pioneer in Toyota’s utility lineup. While it no longer exists as a nameplate, its influence carried through to the Hilux and LandCruiser 70 Series. Collectors value surviving examples for their durability and role in establishing Toyota as a trusted brand in Australia’s ute market.

The line-up currently starts at $2,640 for the Stout (base) and ranges through to $4,070 for the range-topping Stout (base).
