Tanks for the ride

Jonathan Lahy-Neary started Tanks For Everything in Christchurch about five years ago – after a long flight from London. He blames a lack of sleep – or a dodgy airline meal – but he woke with an idea, to import some tanks and let people drive them. The former IT manager has been full-time at it for a year now. They have half a dozen vehicles ranging from a jeep all the way up to the Russian T-55AM2 tank and the 52 tonnes Centurion. And it’s a daunting line-up - I was scared just belting around the course in the jeep, that thing flies… and feels like it’s gonna tip. “Eeek, I don’t want to roll a tank,” I thought as my knees starting knocking together! Then I realised it’s a tank…. it goes through, over and crushes things, it doesn’t tip. So we started off small, well, in tanks terms anyway, with the FV-432 armoured personnel carrier. Despite being terrified before stepping in, it wasn’t long before I was wearing that dopey expression only pure joy brings. The guns have been disabled on all the tanks, which sounds like it would be disappointing, but just driving the hulking machinery is more than enough to get the adrenaline pumping. Then it was time to climb up into the Centurion, a British-built, ex-Australian army tank used in the Vietnam war. To drive the Centurion, you need to be able to (semi) drive a manual…. Bunny hops aren’t advisable when there is a thick metal ledge right at teeth height.Weighing in at 52 tonnes, this sucker gets just 50m out of one litre of petrol - try that at the height of an oil crisis. And how’s this for cool - you can even arrange to run over cars… perhaps the boss’s car for a work team-building exercise! If driving the tank sounds a bit too scary, you can always be driven around by Lahy-Neary and they even do kid’s birthday parties.Based an easy 30 minute drive out of the centre of Christchurch, it’s still remote enough to be able to run a tank around the paddock without the neighbours complaining. The tanks themselves aren’t that hard or expensive to buy – you can pick one up for a lazy $100,000 from a dealer. But be warned, the maintenance costs are prohibitive. An hour’s driving time requires anywhere up to eight hours maintenance – remember we’re dealing with 50 year old machinery here. You really don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy this, but you do need to do a bit of saving. With packages starting at $495 to drive two vehicles and going up to $995 to drive all the biggies, it can be pricey. But you only live once… and how often do you get to woo hoo out loud these days?

SuperX organisers have announced that Reed's Kawasaki teammate, American Ryan Villopoto, will compete at the events. It will be the first time he has raced in Australia."The Sydney and Brisbane races are going to be the only major events I will race in before the 2011 AMA series so it's going to be great preparation for me and I'll be going for the win at both," Villopoto said.Other American supercross riders to compete in the series include Kevin Windham, Davi Millsaps, Mike Alessi and Justin Brayton. So Carsguide is truly flattered that pharmaceutical giant Proctor and Gamble has followed our lead with a video ad featuring a man in a shower.Even if it’s a poor imitation. We took a handsome, buffed Carsguide staffer, constructed a luxury set with lavish props and even put new batteries in the lighting kit Dolphin torch. They were reduced to hiring some footballer to tout their Old Spice body wash. And curiously, there seems to have been a little interest in said footballer’s performance, with more than a hundred encores infesting youtube. We expect that Proctor and Gamble will shortly acknowledge the creative debt they owe Carsguide – you be the judge.Become a fan of Carsguide on Facebook
Mini by design for Life Ball

For 10 years, the carmaker has supported the AIDS charity event with decorated Minis that were auctioned as fundraisers. This year, they've handed the keys to three high-profile designers: Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and Diane von Furstenberg.Cole has gone for a post-punk look, with the body covered in studs. "In our collection we always aim to bring fashion and function into harmony. And that is precisely what the Mini Convertible stands for," Cole says.Diane von Furstenberg's red Mini is sprinkled with colourful lips and features a white roof and alloys. "I wanted to create something that celebrates life and reminds us of the importance of health," she says. "The red colour of the Mini expresses the awareness of HIV/AIDS, the lips represent Diane von Furstenberg. This car is bursting with life and love."Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa went for self-assured minimalist style. His crossover Countryman features an understated matt black body, and bears the hallmark CK signature in reflective rubber on each of the front doors. The cars will be auctioned at the amfAR Gala in Vienna on 17 July.
Subaru WRX STi due September

By Paul Gover · 05 Jul 2010
It's the month when the master blaster of the current lineup, the wide- body STi sedan complete with rally-style giant rear wing, hits Australia. The STi sedan dominated sales of the go-faster Subaru Impreza models through its previous run in Australia, then went missing when Japan decided on a hatch-only sales policy for the current car.But the USA went its own way, demanding a sedan, and it's now the building block for the upcoming local hero. "It's set for September. It could even be late August, which would mean some hot August nights," says Nick Senior, managing director of Subaru Australia. He says the STi sedan will have everything from the pumped-out guards of the latest 'wide body' WRX to a competition-style rear wing and bigger alloy wheels and brakes. "It's more aggressive, it has the big wing," Senior says. He is expecting a big boost to WRX sales when the STi hits, partly because of the car and partly as customers return to Subaru showrooms after the global financial crisis."We're probably selling 10-15 cars a month and we hope to lift that to around 50 when we launch the STi sedan. That market has been the one that's been most impacted by the GFC. It's more of a discretionary spend than any other model we have."Senior says the regular WRX now also comes with a sedan body, a move is already giving a boost to sales. "We're selling two sedans for every hatch. That's consistent with WRX since we first launched it. For many years it was 90 per cent sedan in Australia."Over time we would expect 70-80 per cent of WRX sales will be sedans. Globally, hot hatches are the thing in Europe but in Australia it's exactly the other way around. We're rather unique in that."
