Vehicle-to-grid in Australia explained

EVs are more than just cars in Australia. They can charge devices, power houses and even earn their owners money, as Australia's energy grid undergoes a once-in-a-generation transformation.Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) is the final step to fully unlock this potential for electric cars Down Under.V2G is a type of bi-directional charging, a technology that comprises vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-home (V2H) and V2G.It allows an electric car to use its battery to send its power back into the energy grid, rather than just power external devices, or charge home batteries.V2G allows owners to charge up their EVs at cheaper times and sell it back to the electricity grid at more expensive times.Rooftop solar, of which Australia has some of the highest uptake in the world, can also be used to charge an EV effectively for free and transfer the stored electricity to the grid for pure profit, especially when an abundance of sunlight has home battery systems fully charged.V2G is not far away in Australia, but there remains roadblocks to its full-scale uptake. Many car manufacturer warranties do not support V2G use as they do not cover battery damage caused by third-party set-ups.Rapidly transferring energy on incompatible vehicles can cause substantial wear on the battery and cause other safety issues. There is also debate about which safety protocols V2G should abide by in Australia as the tech faces regulatory hurdles. The latest ISO 15118-20 protocol is deemed safer than the original ISO 15118-2 for example, but it will need longer to be fully implemented in Australia.Manufacturers are starting to alter their warranties and are undergoing extensive trials for the technology with electricity providers. We are likely to see a full-scale uptake of V2G in Australia within the next couple of years, as regulatory approvals and car warranties catch up, but there is still work to do to make them safer and more efficient. Hyundai and Kia are expected to prepare major announcements for the tech within the next few months. Some models already on sale with V2G capability may be able to use the technology via a software, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but it is unclear exactly which models will be eligible. The federal government has shown a keen interest in V2G as part of its energy policy and has recently committed substantial investment towards establishing a network through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) which currently helps to fund other EV technologies like public DC fast chargers.
Toyota’s forbidden smash hit updated

Toyota has updated its smash-hit Crown hybrid in Japan. The Crown is one of the best-selling cars in Japan outside of the dominant Kei car segment. The Crown name cover a versatile line-up, available as a crossover, SUV, sedan and estate. It has launched as a crossover, with sport and sedan variants joining later in September followed by the estate towards the end of 2026. The Crown Crossover is generally bigger than the Camry and is positioned as a premium choice in the market.Crossover variants start from around 5.2 million yen, which is about $46,000, while the sedan starts from 6.2 million yen, the equivalent of less than $60,000. Crossover variants now receive red-coloured brake callipers, a dimpled leather gear shifter and a dimpled leather steering wheel. The steering wheel is heated and has touch-sensing functionality, and now features new paddle shifters. The sedan’s interior now has the option of a 13.2-inch OLED rear-seat display and 10-speaker premium sound system. Sport SUV variants have an updated interior trim that features new grey ditching and black switch surrounds for a slick feel inside. The Crown's interior also features a 12.3-inch digital driver display and 12.3-inch central touchscreen. The Toyota Crown is available with two conventional hybrid set-ups and a plug-in hybrid one in Japan.Hybrid set-ups for the Crossover include a 2.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and dual electric motor set-up, producing 254kW and 460Nm in all-wheel drive, as well as a 2.5-litre petrol electric motor unit, making 172kW and 221Nm in front-wheel drive. Toyota also offers a plug-in hybrid set-up in the Crown SUV spin-off that pairs a 2.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors to offer a total system output of 225kW. Plenty of Toyota Crown examples are brought into Australia via grey importers, but its popularity has not been enough for the Japanese brand to consider offering it officially. Its luxury-pitched position would see it fall into direct competition with Lexus in Australia - Toyota’s own premium brand. The company's executives have previously poured cold water on the idea of the Crown range launching locally. "It's a beautiful car but it gets back to what's suitable for our market,” former Toyota Australia Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley told CarsGuide in late 2023. “We'd love to have everything, but it rationalises down to what services our customers better, and the commercial realities, too.”Sedans and to a degree station wagons are making a small comeback in Australia, with many Chinese automakers looking to exploit an increasingly ignored part of the market.New options coming soon for the mid-size wagon and sedan space include the Mazda 6e and Geely Emgrand, while Zeekr is set to offer its sporty electric 7GT wagon before the end of the year.BYD has already made an impact in the segment with its Seal 6 plug-in hybrid, while the Tesla Model 3 is largely credited with keeping interest in the bodystyle alive for many years, albeit in fully electric form.Whether these shifts in the market could make Toyota think twice about the Crown’s future Down Under remains to be seen.
Top areas for EV uptake might surprise you

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are skyrocketing now in Australia largely thanks to novated leasing arrangements, and new data about the areas where the highest uptake is might surprise you.As it currently stands, EVs priced under the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold ($91,661) that are purchased under a novated leasing agreement are exempt from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT).This type of leasing agreements use pre-tax earnings to pay for the vehicle payments, plus things like insurance, servicing, tyres and charging costs are typically bundled into the pre-tax payments. This brings down your overall taxable income.New analysis from the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) has revealed which postcodes in the first half of 2026 had the highest EV uptake with an eligible FBT-exempt novated lease. The overall top postcode with the highest EV uptake for eligible FBT-exempt novated leases in the first half of 2026 is Tarneit in Victoria, followed by Werribee, which is a neighbouring suburb in Melbourne’s west. The third highest suburb is Kellyville, NSW, followed by Marsden Park, NSW and Coombs, ACT.Here is a breakdown of the top 10 postcodes:Many of the listed suburbs with the highest EV uptake for eligible FBT-exempt novated leases in the first half of 2026 are notably on the outer edges of major cities like Melbourne or Sydney. Many are also predominantly working-class suburbs, or ones that are having a growth with new housing developments. In these suburbs, many residents will be facing long commutes to work, leaving residents more exposed to the cost of rising fuel prices and seeking more cost-effective alternatives. The following is breakdown per state:VictoriaNew South WalesQueenslandWhile plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) under the LCT threshold are no longer exempt from FBT when purchased through a novated lease agreement, EVs continue to be for now. However, this is set to end on all electric cars by March 2029.EVs priced more than $75,000, but below the LCT threshold, will no longer be eligible from April 2027. Instead they will have to pay 75 per cent of the FBT from that date.“The new rules will encourage manufacturers to offer more affordable and cheaper to run EVs in the Australian market,” said Treasurer of Australia Jim Chalmers and Energy Minister Chris Bowen via The Guardian in May 2026.“The current new vehicle efficiency standards have seen a dramatic increase in the availability of affordable EV models, so now is the right time to focus the FBT exemption on these cars.“We will continue to provide support for families who choose to switch to EVs as we transition to a permanent 25% discount on FBT for these cars.”
Study says common new car feature useless

Passenger media screens aren’t appealing to most car owners, a recent report into new and emerging car technology has revealed.Screens in cars are the current big thing, and quite literally, too, with media displays growing larger. The Cadillac Optiq SUV for example has a 33-inch horizontal display. But we’re now in the era of front passenger displays, as well.Often found in more premium vehicles the dashboard integrated screen allows the front passenger to see and control media, sat nav and other functions including watching movies in some cases. Porsche’s Taycan features a passenger media display in a cockpit full of screens.A multitude of screens may look impressive but in reality owners of vehicles that had them found the technology unappealing according to a new report by United States automotive analysts JD Power. The JD Power 2026 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study reported that many owners of vehicles with passenger screens didn’t use them. “More than one-third (35 per cent) of owners industrywide who have a passenger screen say they have never tried to use it, while just six per cent say they use it every time they drive.” It was also found that vehicles with passenger media screens experienced more instances of technical problems. The study found the technology owners placed the most value in was often the kind that was integrated so well into the functions of the vehicle that it was barely perceptible other than making the driving experience better. JD Power Director of Customer Success Doron Hikry said, “The technology customers value most is often the technology they barely notice because it simply works.”“Smart ignition and smart climate control make everyday driving easier without demanding the driver’s attention, while more automation and additional screens don’t necessarily translate into a better experience. “For automakers, the opportunity is to prioritise technology that makes driving simpler, not more complicated. The features that solve real problems without adding effort or stress for the driver are the ones resonating most with customers,” he said.CarsGuide’s own reviewers have found similar results with proximity unlocking and smart ignition high on our lists of great technology. Low on our lists? Controls that were once accessed with physical dials and buttons being replaced by screens. We’re talking about climate control and sound system volume, especially.Regulators are keeping an eye on some of these features, with EuroNCAP and ANCAP considering expanding on physical control requirements in the future.A host of other frustrating features in many new cars like electronic doorhandles were recently banned by Chinese regulators, with the changes expected to flow through for cars sourced from China in our market.
Affordable EV safety tested in Australia

Two affordable EVs have learned their safety fate in Australia. The Geely EX2 and Leapmotor B05 electric hatchbacks have provided buyers with some new options in the budget-focused electric car space. They have now both been tested under the Australasian New Car Assessment Program’s (ANCAP) new 2026 protocols. They are among the first to be tested using the revamped criteria that places a great focus on preventing accidents and safe driving. The B05 is Leapmotor’s newest and most affordable model put on sale in Australia, starting from $35,990 (drive-away). It achieved a five-star overall rating from ANCAP. ANCAP emphasised the hatchback’s strong crash avoidance performance, heaping praise on its lane departure warning and auto emergency braking systems. The watchdog said Leapmotor needed to improve in scenarios involving pedal misapplication and driveway runover risks. The B05 impressed with its crash protection, achieving a 92 per cent rating, with ANCAP highlighting a well-designed vehicle structure and restraints.ANCAP said the B05 demonstrated capability in the safe driving category, which evaluates driver assist features and hazard awareness, but it said there was room for improvement. The Geely EX2 has already proven to be one of the most popular EVs so far, with the compact hatch amassing nearly 500 registrations in August, having only gone on sale in late July. It is priced as one of the cheapest electric cars on sale, starting from just $26,490 (before on-road costs), putting it into competition with the BYD Atto 1 (from $23,990) and larger GAC Aion UT (from $31,990). The EX2 was awarded a five-star rating from ANCAP, with the watchdog praising its monitoring system that detects occupants wearing their seatbelts incorrectly. ANCAP also said its active safety software, including auto emergency braking and lane keep assist performed well, while it wasn’t so successful in some low-speed situations. The EX2 provided good protection in front and side impact collisions despite an elevated risk of driver leg injury in frontal offset testing. Pedestrian and other road user safety was impressive on the EX2, according to ANCAP, praising its small size and increased front crush space in the absence of an engine. ANCAP’s Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said these results demonstrate cheaper EVs shouldn’t mean they are less safe. “These results show that choosing a more affordable electric vehicle doesn’t have to mean compromising on safety, Ms Hoorweg said.”“The Leapmotor B05 and Geely EX2 have got the fundamentals right, delivering good crash protection, effective crash avoidance technology and important safety features as standard.“With more brands and models entering the Australian and New Zealand markets, safety is another area where manufacturers need to compete.”
New Pajero priced to thrill

Mitsubishi means business with its new Pajero 4WD priced to thrill.Buyers will be able to choose from three grades when the Pajero arrives in Australian showrooms this December.Buyers have already been lining up to get their hands on the new rough-and-tumble machine, with Mitsubishi recording more than 3000 pre-orders from before the reveal yesterday. It’s a head-turner with butch, boxy and rugged looks and a plush interior to pamper.Prices kick off at $68,490 (before on-road costs) for the entry-level GLS with five seats, or $69,990 with seven seats. The mid-tier Exceed jumps up to $79,990 and the range-topping GSR starts at $84,990. Both variants are only available with seven seats. All come in substantially cheaper than the equivalent Toyota Prado, but just a little bit more than the Ford Everest powered by the V6 diesel.Mitsubishi’s deal is sweetened with a conditional 10-year/200,000km warranty, which requires owners to complete every logbook service at a Mitsubishi dealer or it reverts to a five year/100,000km guarantee.Mitsubishi offers up to 10 years of capped-price servicing with scheduled workshop visits required every 15,000km or 12 months. The new Pajero shares its underpinnings with the current Triton ute, which means it uses a rugged ladder-frame chassis that is found underneath serious off-roaders. This is a break from recent tradition with the past few Pajero generations using a car-like monocoque chassis. Mitsubishi has done some serious work to the Pajero to make it more refined and composed compared to the more workman-like Triton. The chassis is stiffer with greater use of high-quality steel, which increases its stability during cornering but also improves its durability and reliability to better handle the rough stuff. The rear suspension from the Triton has been replaced with a sophisticated five-link set-up to make it more composed on the road. The engine is a 2.4-litre diesel four-cylinder with a single variable geometry turbocharger, which is an evolution of the bi-turbo unit found in the Triton. Mitsubishi has been able to squeeze a little more torque to boost outputs to 150kW and 480Nm.Mitsubishi has ditched the six-speed automatic transmission and installed a new eight-speed unit, which will smooth out the drive experience and lower fuel consumption. It also uses AdBlue to help lower emissions and improve efficiency. The Pajero can play with the big boys with it rated to tow up to 3500kg.It comes with Trailer Load Assist that enhances stability while towing by detecting if the trailer is swaying and can adjust power and braking to each wheel to get the rig back under control.Owners can load up to 300kg of static load, or 100kg dynamic, on the roof, which further boosts its adventure credentials. It is ready to rumble off-road thanks to the company’s Super Select 4WD-II tech.It delivers part-time four-wheel drive for on-road driving, full-time four-wheel drive for all conditions and a rear differential lock and a low range transfer case for heading off the beaten track. There are seven selectable drive modes including Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock.Rally-bred tech such as Active Yaw Control (AYC) is standard. AYC helps manage the torque delivery to left and right wheels to increase stability when cornering. It is paired with active stability and traction control and anti-lock brakes to help the Pajero manage slippery surfaces.Mitsubishi has put a lot of thought into the third row, with it designed for adults. The third row is able to slide up to 150mm and has a tumble mechanism for easy access to the last pew.Mitsubishi has thought about people actually using the last row, with what it claims is plenty of headroom and room for feet under the seats in front. With the third row folded down the boot can hold 519 litres, which is well below that found in the Prado and EverestThis is the most modern-looking Mitsubishi interior by far.Dual 14.3-inch screens - one for the multimedia and the other for the driver’s instruments - dominate the dash. The central screen also houses what the brand calls a Multi Meter, which is a modern, digital version of the old triple meters from previous generations. The new digital readouts will show altitude, compass heading, ambient temperature, vehicle pitch and roll angles and left and right torque distribution.GLS grade come with:18-inch dark grey alloy wheelsWaterproof black fabric seat trimManual driver and front passenger seat adjustment (slide, recline, height)Electric seat lumbar support adjustment (driver and front passenger)Dual 12.3-inch displaysSix-speaker stereoWireless Apple CarPlay and Android AutoSteering wheel heater and paddle shiftersTyre pressure monitoring systemAuto-dimming rear-view mirrorDusk-sensing headlamps and rain-sensing wipersKeyless entry and startElectric tailgatePrivacy glassFront dual-zone automatic air conditioningRear automatic air conditioning system12.3-inch full digital meter clusterPhone wireless chargerTwo USB-C ports in every row Exceed grade adds:20-inch alloy wheelsBlack leather seat trimElectric adjustment for driver and front passenger seatsFront and rear seat heating functionDual 14.3-inch screens12-speaker Yamaha stereoRefrigerated console boxGSR grade adds:20-inch black alloy wheelsTwo-tone camel and black leather seat trimFront-seat ventilation functionFront-seat adjustment memory functionSteering wheel and door mirrors adjustment memory functionPanoramic front sun visors with LED lampsBlack headliningIlluminated front scuff platesFront grille LED lightFront and rear light animation patternFront and rear dark bumpersDark grey side stepsBlack door mirrorsBlack wheel-arch mouldingsBlack panoramic roof with sunroofAdaptive Driving Beam systemDigital rear-view mirrorAir conditioner with nanoe X air purifier
Ford boss teases cheap new ute

Ford CEO Jim Farley has shared some official images on social media of the forthcoming Fathom electric ute ahead of its proper reveal in 2027.The pictures show two prototype examples of the Ford Fathom with heavy camouflage. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen prototype examples of the Fathom. An uncamouflaged version of the Fathom was reportedly shown off at a dealer event in the US last month.Pre-orders for this new Ford electric ute are set to open in the US in early 2027 and at this stage it’s unclear if right-hand drive production is on the cards, but there is a strong hint it may come Down Under. The Ford Fathom is the first vehicle to be built on the US carmaker’s new Universal EV platform. It’s a modular architecture and a series of new vehicles will be based on it.Ford has confirmed the Fathom will have a starting price of US$28,350 (~A$39,500), before on-road costs, for the standard-range battery in the US. This confirms Ford is planning to offer multiple battery configurations. The Fathom’s starting price is virtually identical to the Maverick hybrid ute in the US.The US carmaker has also confirmed all versions of the Fathom will come with the following:Five seatsVehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilityCargo bedFrunkLarge central touchscreenApple Maps integrationApple CarPlay and Android AutoBlueCruise semi-autonomous driving capabilityAt this stage Ford hasn’t publicly revealed the exterior or interior design of the Fathom, however an uncamouflaged example has reportedly been shown to US dealers. The camouflaged prototype is notably smaller than the Ranger and more on par with the Maverick for size. There’s a boxy silhouette with slab sides and a stubby glasshouse. It also appears the charge port is on the front. No official details regarding the tub dimensions, payload, towing capacity, battery capacities, range, power or torque have been confirmed yet.At this stage Ford hasn’t confirmed whether the Fathom will be produced in right-hand drive. The US carmaker has previously confirmed however that its Universal EV platform is capable of right-hand drive.Ford has trademarked the Fathom name in Australia to use on "motor vehicles, namely, gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, vans, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts". This leaves the door open to an arrival in the future, however it’s not a confirmation as many carmakers trademark names they use so other carmakers don’t use them.As it currently stands Ford doesn’t offer any electric ute in Australia. The now-defunct F-150 Lightning was never officially offered through local Ford dealers, though some were imported and remanufactured to right-hand drive by third parties. If the Ford Fathom does come to Australia it will become a rival to the KGM Musso EV, which is also built on a monocoque platform, rather than a tougher body-on-frame architecture, like the Ranger.
Affordable hybrid 4WD to undercut rivals

GAC has slapped a price tag on its upcoming Denza B5 rival over in China ahead of its anticipated launch in Australia in the future. The GAC Yue 7, which was revealed at the Beijing Motor Show earlier this year, starts from the equivalent of just A$37,342 for its most entry-level 2WD Pro variant, with Chinese prices stretching to nearly A$50,000 for the top-spec 4WD Ultra. It is available in China in four variants, the base 2WD Pro, mid-spec Max in both 2WD and 4WD, and the top-spec Ultra only as a 4WD.All variants get a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine (125kW/245Nm) paired with a front transmission-mounted electric motor (205kW/360Nm), or in higher grades with the addition of a rear motor (220kW/385Nm).Total combined power is quoted at 205kW for the 2WD version, or 425kW/1000Nm for the 4WD.The GAC Yue 7 is only available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with two battery sizes, either a smaller 28.3kWh version (161km of CLTC-claimed electric range), which is only available on the base Pro 2WD, or a larger 46kWh battery on every other variant, which delivers 261km electric range in 2WD or 259km of electric range in 4WD.Combined range is up to 1352km, while the fuel consumption with the battery drained (a required disclosure in China) comes to 6.2L/100km.Unlike some rivals, the over five-meter long SUV rides on a monocoque platform rather than a ladder-frame, although it maintains a full-size spare wheel mounted to the swing-open tailgate. As for its off-road abilities, the Yue 7 has a 34.5 degree approach angle, 36.2 degree departure angle, 310mm of ground clearance, with a wading depth of up to 780mm. It can lock its front and rear hardware differentials, although there is no driveshaft connecting the engine and hybrid transmission in the front with the rear axle. This makes the GAC Yue 7 closer in its design to the Denza B5 than the GWM Tank 500. Regardless, GAC says the Yue 7 can emulate a central locking differential with software and has nine software-based terrain modes to deal with various terrain conditions. The Yue 7 has independent suspension all-round with the top-spec ultra scoring dual-chamber air suspension and continuously variable dampers.Other notable features the Yue 7 has includes two 220-volt vehicle-to-load (V2L) power outlets in the cabin, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen with a three-screen digital instrument cluster and separate 1.1-meter long panoramic information display across the top of the dashboard.Overseas the GWM Tank 500 in hybrid form is priced from nearly A$70,000 (in Australia from $75,990), while the 4WD we know as the Denza B5 is priced from A$60,170 (in Australia from $77,185). The upcoming Geely Battleship 700 is yet to be priced, even in China. While the Yue 7 hasn't been confirmed for an Australian launch, the Chinese pricing suggests it would be competitively priced compared to its natural rivals if it did. With the usual 20 per cent additional pricing that cars from China tend to receive, this would place it at roughly A$52,000 for the entry-level 4WD Max grade in Australia. It is highly unlikely our market would receive the particularly sharply-priced 2WD versions, particularly if GAC wants to make a splash in the off-road space with its first large SUV offering.GAC is nowhere near alone in the launch of its trendy 4WD, with other options headed to Australia including from Chery’s Jetour and iCaur brands. Both of which have recently launched Australian divisions, as well as a likely local launch of Geely’s Battleship 700.This will make for an increasingly crowded off-road space in Australia next year and beyond.Existing options include disruptors like the GWM Tank 500 and Denza B5, alongside more traditional and predominantly diesel-powered nameplates like the Toyota LandCruiser, Nissan Patrol, and upcoming new-generation Mitsubishi Pajero.

Aussie car buyers can’t get enough of the Tesla Model Y right now.Tesla’s mid-size SUV topped the sales charts for August 2026, fending off three Toyota models in the latest set of data. Total car sales held relatively steady in August, with plenty of the usual players occupying the top spots. Electric cars are also making an impact Down Under.Four electric-only models made featured in the top 10 last month. The Tesla Model Y surged to the top of the monthly standings once again, with 6414 sales as its new three-row Model Y L experienced sustained popularity.Combining sales of its Model 3 sedan, Tesla was the third best-selling brand in the country. Toyota’s near 20,000 sales was the best out of any brand, and saw it occupy second, third and fourth on the standings. Its new RAV4 continues to impress (5470), followed by the Hilux ute (4833) that now holds a healthy lead over its arch rival the Ford Ranger (2440). Sales numbers start to drop off after the HiLux, with the Prado’s 2475 rounding out the top four. The Ford Ranger ute experienced another decline in August 2026, falling to fifth position on the standings (2440).The Ranger has been the best-selling car in Australia for the last three consecutive years, but sales decreased in August 2026 by more than 50 per cent compared to August 2025. The next five cars were from Chinese brands as they increased their grasp over the Australian market. The BYD Sealion 7 mid-size SUV finished in sixth place (2213), followed by the Chery Tiggo 4 small SUV (2012), with the Geely EX5 registering 1947 examples last month. BYD may only have had one car in the top 10, but it was the second best-selling brand in Australia in August 2026.Key Tiggo 4 rival, the GWM Haval Jolion, sold 1891 units, while the Zeekr’s 7X sold 1748 units last month. The Isuzu D-Max took out ninth spot for the month (1708), with the Hyundai Kona finishing off the top 10 with 1688 sales.

Geely is set to reveal two new SUV models at the forthcoming Sydney Everything Electric show from September 18 to 20.Both of these two new Geely SUV models are set to launch in Australia during 2027.They will be shown alongside the existing EX5 and Starray EM-i SUVs, EX2 hatchback, as well as the forthcoming Emgrand L EM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan. The latter vehicle is set to launch in Australia in the first half of 2027 and will be a key rival to the likes of the Toyota Camry and BYD Seal 6.At this stage Geely hasn’t officially confirmed what new SUV models it will display at the Sydney Everything Electric show. The Chinese carmaker previously showed the flagship M9 PHEV SUV at the Melbourne Motor Show in April. However, it’s unclear whether this is one of the new SUV models it plans to launch locally.Geely offers a sprawling number of SUVs in its global portfolio, including the Galaxy M7, Galaxy Cruiser 700/Battleship and Monjaro, among others. The announcement of Geely revealing two new Australian-bound SUVs follows an international roll-out of the aforementioned Monjaro. The Geely Monjaro is the export market version of the Xingyue L in China. It’s already offered in markets like Latin America, Russia and the Middle East, but recently launched in Egypt as a PHEV offering. The Monjaro is also already offered in Vietnam, which is notably a right-hand-drive market, like Australia. It’s a petrol-only offering in that market though.Globally the Monjaro is available in a series of pure-petrol, hybrid and PHEV powertrains. A rebadged Renault version of this SUV, dubbed the Grand Koleos, is produced and offered in South Korea.Geely’s namesake brand relaunched in Australia 2025 after a brief flirtation in Western Australia during 2010.The first Geely model offered in Australia this time was the EX5 electric mid-size SUV, followed by the Starray EM-i PHEV SUV and most recently the EX2 small electric hatchback.Until the end of August a total of 19,159 Geely vehicles were sold, which is up 600.3 per cent year-on-year.In fact during the month of August the brand sold a total of 4504 vehicles, making it the 10th best-selling brand.
