Bentley Flying Spur 2020 revealed
By Spencer Leech · 12 Jun 2019
Bentley has revealed its third-generation flagship four-door sedan, the Flying Spur, featuring an all-new design, a more lavish cabin and a thumping 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine. In terms of styling, the Flying Spur borrows much from the two-door Continental GT, with muscular quarter panels and long, flowing body lines.Dimensionally, the Flying Spur is longer than its predecessor at 5304mm, which has in turn stretched the wheelbase by 130mm to 3195mm. As a result, the British limo offers more legroom for rear passengers. The exterior is also highlighted by LED matrix headlights, 21-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres and a large panoramic sunroof.Up front, a wide grille boasts long vertical chrome slats which hark back to the 1957 S1 Continental Flying Spur, while the honeycomb lower grille can be finished in bright chrome or black.Perhaps borrowing moves from Rolls-Royce, the “Flying B” bonnet ornament retracts electrically, and illuminates as part of a welcome lighting sequence as the driver approaches the car.Powering the luxobarge is a 466kW/900Nm 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12, as featured in the Bentayga Speed performance SUV, with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sending drive to an adaptive all-wheel-drive system.Despite a hefty 2435 kilogram kerb weight, the new Flying Spur sprints from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 333km/h.To compensate for the extended wheelbase, the Flying Spur utilises an all-wheel steering system for improved low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed stability.Suspension is handled by new air springs, which feature electronic damping control to adjust between a more comfort-oriented or sporty ride.Inside, the cabin uses a number of high-end materials including diamond quilted leather on the door cards.Bentley will offer 15 upholstery colours for the seats and headlining, as well as seven veneer options including Crown Cut Walnut, Dark Fiddleback and Piano Black.Customers can also combine veneer types for a more bespoke product. The seats are fitted with heating, ventilation, multi-mode massage and adjustable bolster technologies as standard.A large 12.3-inch touchscreen can remain completely hidden using a unique rotating centre console, allowing for a more minimalist style when stowed. For an old-school feel, customers can swap the touchscreen for a number of analogue dials displaying chronometer, compass and outside temperature data.Audiophiles will welcome the optional 19-speaker, 2200-watt Naim sound system which features active bass transducers incorporated in the front seats. Australian timing and specifications have yet to be revealed, however, European deliveries are earmarked for early 2020.

British David Brown luxury brand launching
By Karla Pincott · 20 Jan 2014
British businessman and car fan, David Brown, is apparently dissatisfied with what's on offer in the sports car segment. So he's decided to produce his own, launching a new brand with a production model to be unveiled in April showing what he says is a new approach to the classic British sports car.“I wanted all the impact and style of a classic sports car, but with modern capabilities and conveniences," Brown said in a statement. "This is what I want in a car, but it’s not something anyone really offers. So, I’ve created it myself.” He will put the car into production under the brand name David Brown Automotive -- albeit in limited numbers. “I thought that if I’m looking for this, others might be too,” he said. There may be some confusion over the name David Brown, which will already be familiar to car fans -- and almost hallowed in British car history. However that is as the late head of Aston Martin, who bought both it and Lagonda in the 1940s and whose initials have designated some of the brand's most desirable cars, but who died more than 20 years ago. But there's no doubt the new venture could benefit from any confusion between the two.More details on the car, codenamed 'Project Judi' for now, will be released closer to launch, but Brown said it  will "combine a classically-inspired exterior design, with the latest in performance, dynamics, technology, comfort and refinement".To help him, Brown has secured Land Rover's former chief designer -- who served there for 19 years until 2005 -- from whom he's commissioned a completely original design, sourcing bespoke Brit suppliers for interior trim and materials, and wedding "the latest manufacturing techniques with traditional craftsmanship".This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Range Rover gets star-studded debut
By Paul Gover · 07 Sep 2012
Mark Knoffler rocked, Zara Phillips and Holly Valance smiled for the cameras, and a wide range of British celebrities including witty comedian Jimmy Carr - complete with toy dog - all made the running. But it was the $1.6 billion Range Rover that was the star in London tonight. As the off-road limousine waded through a giant fountain at the Royal Ballet School it signalled the renewal of the ultimate Toorak tractor into its fourth generation.Except that Land Rover says the new Rangie is going green with everything from a lightweight alloy structure to an imminent hybrid - the world's first diesel-hybrid SUV - and enviro leather. ‘We want to make it better in every respect,” the head of Land Rover, Phil Popham, tells Carsguide. That means building a Range Rover that rivals a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class as a luxury limousine, but can still trump a Toyota LandCruiser or Jeep in off-road conditions. The new Range Rover is bigger inside and out, has much more technology and luxury, and will be priced from $178,900 when it arrives in Australia in January. Jaguar Land Rover will have it in spotlights at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney next month, alongside the latest Jaguar F-Type sports car, but the first 25 cars are already taken. There are three engines for Australia - 3-litre V6 diesel, 4.4-litre V8 diesel and 5-litre supercharged V8 petrol - and standard equipment includes everything from re-engineered air suspension to a second-generation Terrain Response system, a choice of five or luxury four-seater cabin layouts, and even huge new brakes and alloy wheels up to 22 inches. “There are more than 2500 new parts,” says Popham. But the Range Rover still carries the DNA which has made it a global success over the past 40-plus years, in everything from the body design to split tailgate - now fully electric - and the 900-millimetre wading ability that was put to the test tonight.
