The Range Rover Evoque P300e is expensive but it does a lot of things we wish other PHEVs would do.

The Land Rover Defender is a beast of an SUV that proudly shows its roots while daring to venture into new territory with its shape. The 110 X P400 certainly doesn't shy away from turning heads. But does it have the substance to back up those looks?

The new-generation Land Rover Defender has impressed with its blend of the old (retro looks and off-road capability) with the new (impressive comfort and drivability) in a very appealing, albeit pricey, package. But, after scrutinising the myriad Defender options available, might the Defender 90 S P300, one of the line-up's cheaper, shorter wheelbase variants, actually be the pick of the bunch?

The Land Rover Discovery may not have the wildly passionate fanbase of its beloved hard-core stablemate, the Defender, but plenty of 4WDers still believe the Disco has plenty of cred as an off-road touring machine. Well, now that the latest Defender is so comfortable, so capable and so refined - geez, it's almost a Disco in disguise - is there any room left in the line-up for the new Discovery?

The new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is one of the most anticipated 4x4 models in Australia, so we thought we'd see how it stacks up against a couple of like-minded competitor four-wheel drives. Here we have the 300 GX up against the Nissan Patrol Ti-L and the Land Rover Defender 110 D250. All three close on price, performance, practicality - we drove them off-road and included a towing test!

Talk about pushing out the envelope in different directions! No SUV combines 4x4 capability with on-road dynamics as Land Rover's Defender. Sure, it's expensive, and way more so with desirable options, but the L633 is also impressively complete. Now, the capacious 110 wagon is joined by the short-body 90. Far from being a lesser Defender, it provides unique attributes, especially for urban users.

The D200 is the base-spec diesel variant in the new Land Rover Defender range. It has an MSRP of $69,626. It’s available in only standard Defender 110 spec and is available with the option of five, six or 5+2 seating.It has a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 147kW/430Nm, and that’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission.It has a permanent all-wheel drive system, dual-range transfer case, as well as Land Rover’s Terrain Response system.It also has centre and rear diff locks.Driver-assist tech includes AEB, a 3D surround camera, wade sensing, cruise control and speed limiter, lane keep assist, and traffic sign recognition and adaptive speed limiter.It has 10.0-inch touchscreen Pivi Pro system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB radio, and sat nav.Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.6L/100km (on a combined cycle).
