If standard race cars are too mainstream for you then you'll love this sideways Volkswagen Camper Van.

The 24 hours of LeMons always stars an interesting line-up of cars but none come close to this Type 2 Volkswagen Microbus turned onto its side.

Appropriately named "The Trippy Tippy Hippy Van", this VW is actually made of two different cars, a 1976 camper van and a 1988 Golf.

It's like a time machine that always takes you back to the 60s.
It's like a time machine that always takes you back to the 60s.

To make this madness work, the van is mounted on top of the Golf and one-way vinyl is used for the windows so the driver can see outside of the car while it also disguises the Golf underneath.

Power comes from a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder GTi engine that produces 89kW (120hp), allowing the hippy van to hit 100km/h in eight seconds while going on to reach a top speed of 160km/h (100mph).

This doesn't sound very race car-like however, the VeeDub (being top heavy) does provide excitement by occasionally cocking up two of its wheels while cornering.

Wow man feels like we're going to tip over.

You can't help but wonder how many happy high herbs this guy had smoked before coming up with such an idea.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
