How to live out your JDM fantasies

By Nick Green
Japan does car rental so much better...

About 90 minutes from Tokyo, nestled among onsens in the picturesque hills of Hakone is a small business called Fun2Drive.

A parking lot with a humble office, Fun2Drive specialize in making your dreams come true.

Fun2Drive rents cars, but not Japan's standard issue Kei cars and econo-hatches. Their fleet is a menu with delicacies for every enthusiast's taste.

I'll have one dream experience please. I'll have one dream experience please.

A Porsche 964 Turbo, Ferrari F355 are parked alongside a Lotus Super 7 and an original Honda NSX.

For the JDM purists, an FD3s RX-7, Fujiwara spec AE86 Trueno and GTRs of every generation, including the hallowed Hakosuka KPGC10 are filled with hi-oku and ready to rent.

They have a historical timetable of cars to choose from. They have a historical timetable of cars to choose from.

Fun2Drive is a half hour from the Tomei Expressway and its connected Wangan stretches if the open road calls, or you want to drive a Ferrari through the crossing at Shibuya.

Most notably though, it is the gateway to a network of mountain pass toll roads so pristine you can hear Initial D eurobeat just looking at the map.

Hakone Turnpike, bet you thought this place was only a dream. Hakone Turnpike, bet you thought this place was only a dream.

Hakone Turnpike, a Japanese motoring icon, is 16 kilometres of blacktop escapism within striking distance of Fun2Drive. Once Toyo Tires Turnpike, now Mazda Turnpike the road is often referred to as Japan’s Nurburgring. It draws drivers from all over the country, with the parking lot of the view lounge at the top host to some of the rarest cars you might ever see.

The Mazda Skyloft. The Mazda Skyloft.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer grip;

or drift;

It is perfect tarmac, draped in cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji in the background. For the touge devotee, there is no better experience.

While the toll roads are not heavily patrolled by police, don’t expect to get away with murder. A British tourist who rented the R35 and spent a day pushing the GT-R’s V-Max found police waiting for him when he came to return the car.
