Chevy unveils replacement for displacement

By Iain KellyIain Kelly
Et tu, Chevy?

Chevy's Silverado pick-up truck is has been as American as apple pie, with a lineage dating back to the 1950s all powered by thumping great pushrod V8s.

But now the 2019 model can come with a 2.7-litre turbo four-cylinder that makes more power than the V8 model from 2013! Packing 310hp (231kW) and 471Nm of torque it out-grunts the old Vortec 4.8-litre V8 by 5hp and 58Nm, but will it win over the US heartland who love their simple bent-eight motors?

The new 4-cyl turbo outperforms the 2013 Vortec V8 comfortably. The new 4-cyl turbo outperforms the 2013 Vortec V8 comfortably.

Chevrolet will still offer a 4.3L V6, turbo six-pot diesel, and V8s in some models, but it claims the 4-cylinder offers better performance and efficiency over the old V8.

Be honest - would you still prefer a V8 in this day and age? Tell us what you think in the comments.Â
