The Oka 4x4 launched in 1987 as a locally engineered off-road vehicle designed for Australian conditions. Developed in Perth with backing from major mining companies, it filled a gap between light utes and heavy trucks. Early versions were powered by Perkins diesel engines and offered in multiple body styles, including troop carriers, pickups and buses.

During the 1990s the Oka 4x4 gained a small but loyal following in mining, tourism and military use. Updates included stronger drivetrains, revised suspension and Cummins diesel power. The model was exported under different names, including the LT and XT, and sold in niche markets such as Papua New Guinea and parts of Asia. Production remained limited, with fewer than 500 units built each year.

Today the Oka 4x4 is no longer in full-scale production but remains in service with tour operators, remote communities and private collectors. Parts supply and rebuilds keep many vehicles running. Its rugged design and Australian roots give it an enduring reputation as a capable off-road workhorse.
