It was only a matter of time before Volkswagen introduced a factory camper version of its ID. Buzz pure-electric van, and now it’s arrived in the shape of the ID. California Cruise. Offered in short- and long-wheelbase form, the adventurous newcomer is equipped with a host of lifestyle-focused extras, including: 2.0m x 1.2m (by 9.0cm thick) folding mattress extending out across the rear seats Lightweight folding table and chair set housed above the mattress Ventilation grilles Window black-out covers Optional panoramic sunroof with light-proof cover No ‘pop-top’ roof or kitchen unit at this stage Power is supplied by the same rear-mounted single electric motor as the ID. Buzz Pro and Pro+ models, sending 210kW/510Nm to the rear wheels with a 79kWh lithium-ion battery in the SWB and 86kWh pack in the LWB likely to deliver similar range figures of 422km and 452km, respectively. But the electric California Cruise’s signature campsite party trick will surely be its V2L (Vehicle to Load) functionality with up to 3.6kW output to power equipment like lighting, cooking gear or a fridge/freezer box that would typically require a petrol generator. Another special feature up the new camper’s sleeve is ‘California Mode’, which keeps the air-conditioning or heating system as well as interior lighting and USB sockets up and running for 48 hours. Volkswagen has positioned the ID. California Cruise as “an important milestone towards an entirely new generation of all-electric campervans, which will be introduced step by step through to 2028.”  Pricing is confirmed in the new model’s German home market at €60,761 (~A$98,300) with deliveries scheduled to start in early 2027. For reference, the current local ID. Buzz line-up starts with the SWB Pro at $75,990, before on-road costs and tops out with the LWB-only dual-motor GTX at $106,990, BOC.   CarGuide contacted Volkswagen Australia for comment on the ID. California Cruise’s potential for local sale and a spokesperson told us, "We are continually reviewing our product portfolio for the Australian market. "While we recognise the interest in the Volkswagen ID. California Cruise, we are unable to confirm local availability or timing at this stage for Australia." 

Volkswagen will launch a number of new electrified commercial vehicles in Australia later this year and in early 2027. Headlining these is the addition of an ID. Buzz Pro all-wheel drive trim, complementing the existing GTX flagship all-wheel drive trim. To date the ID. Buzz Pro has only been offered with a single, rear-mounted electric motor. There is also an all-wheel drive version of the ID.Buzz Cargo, as well as a long-wheelbase body style, coming to complement the existing rear-wheel drive trim. Both of these will form part of a model year 2027 (MY27) update for the ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo. Volkswagen hasn’t fully disclosed what else will be changing or added with this update just yet. Volkswagen is planning to launch a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Multivan people-mover in the first quarter of 2027. It’s understood this will come with all-wheel drive. This will be complemented by an Australian launch of the Caddy PHEV. Beyond the launch of these electrified products, the next launch for Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle division is the Amarok W600, which has been fettled by Australian engineering and manufacturing firm, Walkinshaw. The German carmaker will roll out its MY26 update for the Amarok, which axes the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine, and the addition of a new Amarok Style with the 2.3-litre turbo-petrol engine and the special edition Amarok Dark Label. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia Product Manager Michael Cenci told CarsGuide the entry-level Amarok Core will pick up the updated 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine for MY26, swapping out the wet belt for a timing chain. This mirrors what the related Ford Ranger received for its MY26 update. Beyond the updated engine, the Amarok Core will also receive a 10-speed automatic transmission, replacing the six-speed automatic. At this stage it’s unclear what other changes will occur with this MY26 update for the Amarok. Volkswagen hasn’t published pricing yet.

The Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric remake of the iconic Kombi will continue to be available with cheaper drive-away pricing until 30 April 2026.  The cargo variant starts from $72,990, while the van starts from $79,990. These drive-away deals do not apply to the range-topping GTX.  The discounted pricing was originally announced in mid-October and was only supposed to last until 31 December 2025. The ID. Buzz remains a cheaper alternative to the Mercedes-Benz EQV and eVito Tourer, as well as the Zeekr 009.   Most ID.Buzz models continue to be powered by a single electric motor producing 210kW and 560Nm.  GTX units get a dual-motor set-up, which produces 250kW and 560Nm and comes with all-wheel drive, as opposed to rear-wheel drive. Driving range on the ID. Buzz varies between models, but all have more than 400km (WLTP). The extension of this drive-away pricing deal for the ID. Buzz aligns with recent comments from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Director Nathan Johnson, with the brand eager to see sales take off.  “I think we’re really starting to see the growth now , which is probably a little bit later than I would have hoped for as a brand director and from a dealership network point of view,” Johnson told CarsGuide. 2026 Volkswagen ID. Volkswagen Australia has admitted sales of the retro-looking ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo electric vans didn’t get off to the quickest start but it believes the tides are now starting to change.

Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz Pro all-electric people mover has had its price slashed by almost $15,000.
