ANCAP awards 5 stars to Accord, X-Trail, City, Prius C and 308
By Matthew Hatton · 14 Oct 2014
Honda Accord finally achieves maximum five-star safety rating along with Nissan X-Trail, Honda City, Toyota Prius C and upcoming Peugeot 308.Honda have overcome the shock of last year's four-star safety rating for the Accord sedan, with recent structural tweaks helping it to earn the full five stars from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).When the 9th generation Accord appeared in May 2013, ANCAP deemed its frontal offset test performance unsatisfactory for a five-star rating, scoring 11.21 out of a possible 16 .Honda has since implemented changes to the frontal structure of the Accord in August 2014 which has raised its score in the frontal offset test to 14.79 in this round testing, pushing it over the line for a maximum five-star rating."This is a great example of a non-regulatory program at work," ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh said."Honda has reviewed the ANCAP test results and actively implemented changes to offer consumers a safer car."The same praise was not lavished on the X-Trail mid-size SUV however, with ANCAP critical of Nissan's omission of the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) from Australian-spec models. Despite this the SUV still gained a five star safety rating.ANCAP was similarly critical of the Qashqai small SUV's AEB omission when it was tested earlier this year.Like the Qashqai, AEB is available on European-spec X-Trails, along with several other models on the Australian market. It can prevent collisions by detecting stationary objects and applying braking force before the driver reacts. For the Honda City and Toyota Prius C, all model variants have been given the maximum five stars by ANCAP. Only diesel versions of the new Peugeot 308 have been awarded five stars, leaving petrol versions unrated.

Peugeot 308 sets fuel record
By Aiden Taylor · 20 Mar 2014
With the 308's new PureTech e-THP three-cylinder petrol engine on board, the 2014 European Car Of The Year winner averaged 2.37L/100km and travelled a total distance of 1810km on a single tank of fuel during an economy test – both are new records for a production car.The test was conducted at the Almeria circuit in Spain with the UTAC (Union Technique de l'Automobile, Motocycle et Cycle) authority present to witness the achievement. The car, equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, was driven for over 32 hours by several drivers, such was the duration of this test. The vehicle used for the economy run was identical to the Peugeot 308 1.2 e-THP 130 that customers can now purchase in Europe. The model's combination of a high-pressure direct injection system and a high performance turbocharger used with a small displacement three-cylinder engine represents a significant technological breakthrough, according to Peugeot. The 308 is also the lightest vehicle in its class - which includes cars like the VW Golf and Ford Focus – further enhancing the engine's efficiency and performance capabilities.

2014 Peugeot 308 wagon revealed
By Karla Pincott · 07 Jan 2014
The small Peugeot 308 hatch arriving here later this year is set to be joined by a 'Tourer' sibling, with the French brand revealing the wagon version ahead of its global debut at Geneva motor show in March. At 4.58 metres, it's 8cm longer than the current 308 Touring, and Peugeot is touting the practicality offered by that extra length, which it says has class-best boot space of 610 litres VDA -- 40 more than current  -- and rear seats that fold down in a single flick to give you a flat luggage floor from the tail all the way through to the back of the first row. The newcomer is likely to continue with a seven-seat option in its strong targeting of the family market. And despite being larger, it's also 140kg lighter -- which will boost handling ability and also work with the expected economy focus of petrol and diesel engines to improve fuel consumption over the outgoing Touring's figures of 7.6L/100km for the 1.6-litre petrol and 4.3 and 5.3 for the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesels. The press statement outlines a new BlueHDi version of the 1.6-litre diesel that has reduced CO2 emissions to 85g/km -- suggesting a fuel economy of around 3.3L/100km. While Peugeot will bring the new hatch here towards the end of the year, we're yet to get confirmation that the new Tourer will follow, however we're tipping you could start looking for it in local showrooms early in 2015. Peugeot 308 R revealed
By Viknesh Vijayenthiran · 27 Aug 2013
French automaker Peugeot is launching a new generation of its 308 hatchback at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, and to help build excitement will also roll out this performance-oriented concept version. Dubbed the 308 R, the concept hints at a hotted-up Peugeot 308 that if built would target the likes of the Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST. The 308 R concept is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which rates at 200kW and is found in the Peugeot RCZ R sports coupe, which also debuts in Frankfurt next month. Peak torque registers at 329Nm and is available from a low 1,900 rpm. Drive is channelled to the front wheels, via a six-speed manual transmission and a Torsen differential. The wheels are 19-inch light allows wrapped with 235/35 tires, and inside them sits four-piston brake calipers and Alcon discs. The concept gets a number of unique body panels, which are made out of carbon fibre and bolted directly to the regular 308’s lightweight platform. That platform is Peugeot’s new EMP2 modular set, which is also found in the latest Citroën C4 Picasso and is said to be around 135kg lighter than the platform in the previous 308. But to further improve dynamics, the 308 R also sports lowered suspension and a wide track--up to 30mm wider at the front. At the rear, there is a discreet roof spoiler and a bumper with an integrated diffuser. Also integrated with the rear bumper is a pair of square-shaped exhaust tips. Inside, there’s a driver-focused cockpit with a big 9.7-inch touch-screen display mounted in the dash. Peugeot explains that the dash was designed so that the displays can be viewed over and not through, helping to reduce driver distractions. Sales of the new Peugeot 308 commence in Europe after the car’s Frankfurt debut. Hopefully, we’ll see a production version of the 308 R in the not too distant future. www.motorauthority.com

Peugeot 308 first photos and details
By Malcolm Flynn · 14 May 2013
Peugeot has dialled back the quirky design to bring the new 308 -- the French carmaker’s VW Golf rival – more in line with the recent 208 and 2008. Arriving some time in 2014, the all-new 308 promises weight savings of up to 140kg -- largely due to the use of PSA Peugeot Citroen’s new EMP2 modular platform, which will eventually underpin half the group’s products. The new small hatch is slightly shorter than the model it replaces (4.25m vs 4.28m), while other dimensions will be revealed at the 308’s public debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The design is much more conservative than the outgoing model, and the earlier 307 and 308 models’ front quarter windows have been dropped, in favour of a more conventional six-window body design. Up front, an evolution of Peugeot’s floating grille is flanked by full-LED headlights on most variants – a world first for the small segment. At the rear, the 308 sports an evolution of the 4008, 208, and 2008’s ‘Peugeot lion claw’ drawn taillight design. “The new Peugeot 308 has a pure and technological exterior design that speaks of high strength and high quality,” Peugeot Design Director Gilles Vidal said. The 308’s new interior design features an emphasis on material quality and the button count has been reduced through the use of a 9.7 inch touchscreen interface. Designed according to Peugeot’s ‘i-cockpit’ philosphy, the interior has been laid out to favour the driver, promoting a focus on the road ahead.“When inside the car, one discovers a world of refined style, completely original in the world of hatchback cars, with a cockpit that is intense, innovative and intuitive; it is the Peugeot i-cockpit,” 308 Product Manager Vincent Devos said.Drivetrain options will continue to include a range of petrol and diesels, producing emissions as low as 85g/km (European cycle). Local options are yet to be finalised, but the new 308’s lower weight is expected to bring significant efficiency gains across the board. An enhanced driving experience is also expected, with the new platform’s lighter weight being aided by revisions to steering and suspension geometry.“On the road, driving pleasure is enhanced by the new EMP2 modular platform. With its considerable reduction in weight, it contributes to the dynamism and easy handling of the New Peugeot 308,” 308 Project Director Laurent Declerck said. This reporter is on Twitter: @Mal_Flynn
