Non-Chinese brands selling well in 2025!

There’s a lot of attention paid to the rise of Chinese auto brands in Australia and their ever-increasing market share.Brands like BYD, Chery, GWM, MG and newer marques like Deepal, Geely, JAC, Leapmotor and Zeekr have collectively taken a bite out of the sales of some long-standing brands. But it’s not all doom and gloom for the more established, non-Chinese makes. In fact, a number of them are performing quite well on the sales charts so far this year. However, it’s not mainstream legacy brands that are on the up. In fact, a lot of the top-10 brands are treading water. With the exception of Fiat Professional, whose sales are up by 120 per cent this year, all of the other brands experiencing strong growth in 2025 are exotic, premium or semi-premium offerings. One of the semi-premium brands doing well in 2025 is Cupra. Volkswagen Group’s Spanish performance specialist has seen its overall sales shoot up by 35 per cent so far in 2025 after a slower 2024.While a couple of its models - the ageing Ateca SUV and the Leon small hatchback - have gone backwards on the sales charts, the striking Formentor SUV has increased by 54.8 per cent in 2025. At 469 sales so far, it’s not a massive number but it represents a big uptick for a newish name. The Born EV is also up this year by 24.2 per cent, while the only just arrived Tavascan electric SUV is expected to further boost Cupra’s sales thanks to keen pricing and sharp design. Facelifted versions of the Leon and Formentor arriving this year should only help Cupra’s upward trajectory.Mini is another semi-premium brand having an excellent 2025. The BMW-owned marque’s sales are up by 69.4 per cent so far (1394 versus 823 units). And it’s largely thanks to one model. The new-gen Countryman SUV has proven to be a massive hit, recording 553 sales which equates to a 369 per cent increase on Q1 last year. As well as enjoying positive media reviews, buyers have clearly warmed to the new Countryman’s more family-friendly dimensions, new tech and the option of petrol and fully-electric powertrains.Of course the Cooper hatch remains the brand’s top seller, with petrol and electric versions combining for a total of 634 sales, up 29.7 per cent.It might not be a premium brand in its US home market, but in Australia, Chevrolet takes a more upscale position as it only sells high-end, full-size pick-ups and sports cars. That strategy is clearly working because Chevrolet sales are up by 12.8 per cent so far in 2025, on the back of interest in the Corvette sports car. Z06 sales are up 250 per cent and the Stingray has increased by 50 per cent. The Silverado 1500 truck is the biggest seller with 627 sold in 2025, up by 14.4 per cent. Two of Australia’s most popular premium brands are also having a good year - Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.What’s interesting about Lexus is that its growth is mostly down to the compact LBX SUV. The little crossover has recorded a massive 353 per cent increase on its Q1 2024 tally with 598 sales. The LBX is easily outselling its slightly larger UX sibling and is just ahead of the aforementioned Cupra Forementor (469 sales) and Mini Countryman (553), but trailing the Audi Q3 (676) in the premium small SUV segment. The Toyota Prado-based GX large SUV is Lexus’ other solid performer with 285 sales.Mercedes is having an exceptional start to the year with a 31 per cent boost thanks to big sales increases on a number of its model lines.Key models having a good year include the E-Class (+223 per cent) and S-Class (+300 per cent) sedans, GLA (+139.2 per cent), GLC (+82.5 per cent) and GLS (+72.6 per cent) SUVs and EVs like the EQB (+270 per cent).Despite double-digit sales drops for most of its Range Rover models - Range Rover, Evoque and Velar - Land Rover has seen strong interest in the Defender (+61.2 per cent) and the Discovery Sport (+57 per cent) for a Q1 boost of 13 per cent.As is often the case in harsh economic times, the top end of town is sailing through unaffected. That is evident in sales of exotic brands in Australia, which are largely in positive territory.Rolls-Royce may have small volumes, but sales are up by 111 per cent this year, while sports car brands like Aston Martin (+34.1 per cent), Ferrari (+7.4 per cent), Lamborghini (+78.3 per cent) and McLaren (+100 per cent) are all well in front of the year prior.

Mercedes-Benz has added a new, lower-cost variant to its large sedan E-Class line-up, with the E200 joining the existing E300.The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E200 starts from $117,900 before on-road costs which represents a $14,100 saving over the higher grade E300, costing $132,000.The E200 joins the line-up almost a year after the current-generation E-Class launched in Australia. As well as missing out on real leather upholstery (replaced with synthetic leather) the E200 doesn’t have the AMG-Line exterior nor some of the extra power of the E300.Still powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, the E200 has just 150kW and 320Nm under its belt and is aided by the mild-hybrid starter-generator which can chip in 17kW and 205Nm extra temporarily. It drives the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, and has a claimed 0-100kmh sprint of 7.5 seconds. The E200 doesn’t miss out on too much kit, though, still retaining the clever digital LED headlights and Burmester 4D surround sound system with 17 speakers. As usual, safety is covered comprehensively by Mercedes with 10 airbags inside plus a host of active and passive safety tech. Finally, a Comfort Package which adds real leather seats with heating and ventilation comes in at $3500.

Price up on 64 Benz models as A-Class axed

Those aspiring to be Mercedes-Benz owners may be in for a shock with the prestige brand recently axing its A-Class small sedan, while increasing prices across its entire range by up to $6000. The A-Class sedan made its Australian debut in 2019 and joined the A-Class hatchback to compete with the likes of Audi’s A3 sedan and Sportback. The A-Class is also the most affordable entry point into Mercedes-Benz’s entire Australian line-up.Mercedes-Benz says the discontinuation only affects the A-Class sedan and the hatch will remain on sale.“The A-Class sedan is currently still on sale in Australia, however factory orders have been closed,” a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson told CarsGuide. “Customers can order locally available stock. The A-Class hatchback is currently still available for factory and stock order.” The A-Class sedan and hatch have been a success story for Mercede-Benz with the total sales for 2024 reaching 1997 — about 50 more cars than the year’s sales for the C-Class sedan. The reason for the sedan’s departure Mercedes-Benz says is to make way for electric and hybrid models which will be the new entry points into the brand.“Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new range of entry-level vehicles built on the all-new, electric-first MMA platform. The upcoming CLA will lead this range, which will include a four-door coupé, a shooting brake, and two SUVs.” The A-Class hatch might remain but it’s also now expensive with the price rising by $600 to $57,500. Actually, every model in Mercedes-Benz’s entire line-up (there are 64 of them) has seen a price increase with the most expensive Maybach S 680 vlimbing by $6000.Entry into the C-Class sedan range is now $92,600 (up by $1200), while the E-class starts at $132,000 (up by $1586). Mercedes-Benz’s smallest and most affordable SUV the GLA 200 is now $63,600 (up by $700). Mercedes-Benz told CarsGuide the price increase was caused by several factors but would not go into detail.“As pricing is a dynamic topic that is influenced by a wide range of factors, we can’t provide any further comments,” a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson told CarsGuide. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed pricing and features for the 2024 E-Class which will arrive in a single E300 mild-hybrid trim level from next week. The Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series rival will cost $131,500, before on-road costs and options, shrinking the five-strong E-Class range to one variant, for now. High-power AMG E53 and E63 models are due later. Inside, the E300 features Mercedes’ 14.4-inch ‘Superscreen’ touchscreen media system, 5G connectivity, third-gen operating system and digital key compatible with Apple iPhone and smart watch. The new variant sits between the old entry-level E200 and mid-spec E350, with pricing closer to the latter. More powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid, are offered overseas but there’s no word yet for Australia.Under the E300’s bonnet is a turbo-petrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an integrated starter motor generator bumping outputs by 17kW and 205Nm to 190kW and 400Nm total. The E-Class drives its rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.A drag coefficient of 0.23 helps keep fuel consumption at 7.2L/100km in the combined cycle. The E-Class sedan rides on a 20mm longer wheelbase for improved interior space. Visually, there are cues from the new C-Class sedan combined with new details, including an illuminated grille and star motif tail-lights. The E300 has a generous amount of equipment standard, including AMG Line exterior styling, adaptive LED headlights, 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, plus adaptive dampers and steel springs (the suspension is 15mm than other overseas-market models). Inside, the 14.4-inch touchscreen is complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a digital driver’s display, head-up display, augmented realist navigation, dual-zone climate control and power-adjust sports front seats with heating, leather upholstery in three colours.Adding to the E-Class luxury experience is an in-built ‘assistant’. Voice control features along with the ability to automate habits, for example pre-setting the car’s climate control before you leave at a set time. The E-Class can also intelligently make these choices, for example turning on the heated seats when the outside temperature dips below a certain threshold. The E300 gets driver-assistance tech such as lane-centring, AEB, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert. A set of 11 airbags features as well.An optional ‘Energizing Plus’ pack adds multi-contour front seats with adjustable lumbar and bolsters as well as a heated rear bench for $5200. The 'Plus Pack' brings adaptive air suspension, rear axle steering, a 17-speaker 730-watt Burmester sound system, gesture control and quad-zone climate control. The Mercedes-Benz E300 will arrive in dealerships next week, with timing for the AMG E53 yet to be confirmed. 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class pricing
