Mercedes-Benz has revealed the price and specs for its all-new E 53 AMG Hybrid sedan as order books officially open for the upgraded model.
Starting at $199,900, before on-road costs, the new E 53 AMG is $26,031 more than the previous model sold in Australia and a $69,486 premium over the new-generation E 300, but it welcomes some major upgrades to compensate for the hefty price increase.
Most importantly, that includes a potent plug-in hybrid system. The tried-and-tested in-line 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine remains, but Mercedes has added a 120kW/450Nm electric motor and 21.2kWh battery pack.
The end result is 430kW/750Nm being transmitted to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. This is up 130kW/230Nm from its predecessor, while its 0-100km/h sprint time has been slashed by 0.7 seconds to 3.8 seconds in the process.
This time around it also offers 100km of NEDC-certified electric range, which can be activated through the steering wheel-mounted drive mode selector.
Fuel consumption is now quoted at 1.7-litres/100km under the NEDC cycle, which is a remarkable improvement from 9.2L/100km on its predecessor.
In addition to the new plug-in hybrid set-up, Mercedes has made additional hardware and software changes. That includes a new twin-scroll exhaust gas turbocharger with higher boost pressure and additional front engine and wheel arch coolers. Steel-spring AMG suspension, two-valve adjustable dampers and revised engine mounts also help to improve ride dynamics.

An 11kW AC charger is provided on board, while there is 60kW DC fast charging capability, which Mercedes claims will replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 20 minutes.
To accommodate the larger powertrain, the E 53 AMG is 11mm wider on each side compared to the standard E-Class. There are also larger front air intakes, a unique AMG front apron and a larger lower inlet to direct air to the AMG front cooler. An external side intake also directs cool air through the wheel arches.
Red AMG brake callipers with 390mm brake discs and six-piston fixed callipers are housed by 20-inch light-alloy wheels, while 21-inch forged alloys are an optional extra. In between each wheel are AMG-specific side skirts and retractable door handles for a sleeker look.

An AMG spoiler lip on the trunk lid, a new rear apron and diffuser, as well as a double round tailpipe trims complete the sporty look, while Hybrid-specific badges show off its electrified credentials.
Inside, the cabin is clad with E 53 AMG-specific open-pore ash wood with AMG branding, while electronically-adjustable, heated and ventilated AMG sports seats come standard in Nappa leather and embossed AMG emblems.
An AMG steering wheel also comes wrapped in Nappa leather with a drive-mode selector that enables Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Electric (For EV driving) and Battery Hold (to maintain battery charge).
A 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, passenger screen and 14.4-inch central touchscreen complete the three-screen setup, the latter of which comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. There’s also ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, wireless charging and a 17-speaker Burmester surround system.
As always, there is a suite of optional packages, including exterior AMG Night Packaging and AMG Carbon Fibre Packaging, or interior Performance Seat Packaging and Energising Packaging.
