Land Rover gives us our first look and announces Australian price and spec for the upcoming Range Rover Evoque Convertible.

Land Rover has the first images of the new facelifted Evoque SUV ahead of the model's public debut at next month's Geneva motor show.Boasting an all-new turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, revised styling and updated interior, the 2016 model aims to continue the current car's 'fastest-selling Land Rover ever' title.The new all-alloy 'Ingenium' diesel engine is shared with the incoming Jaguar XE sedan and will be offered in two states of tune - 110kW/380Nm in eD4 guise and the 132kW/430Nm TD4 - and both are expected for Australia.The less potent version can achieve 4.4L/100km combined on the European cycle when paired with a six-speed manual transmission and two-wheel drive, while the 132kW version still manages an impressive 4.8L/100km combined with four-wheel drive and a manual.Like the current model, the facelifed Evoque will also be available with a nine-speed torque converter automatic gearbox - an option box the vast majority of Australian customers will tick. Land Rover is yet to confirm fuel economy figures for the automatic models, however.  Land Rover has also tweaked the styling of the small SUV, adding a new range of alloy wheels, revised headlights with fully adaptive LED main beams and restyled daytime running lights, reworked taillights, new front bumper and two new grille designs to bring it in line with the newer Range Rovers.The interior has also received an update with new seats and door trims along with a redesigned instrument display and new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Jaguar Land Rover's InControl apps functionality. A new hands-free automatic opening tailgate has also been added to certain models. Like the Discovery Sport's system, it allows owners to open the tailgate by waving their foot under the rear bumper of the car.The facelifted Evoque also adopts the All Terrain Progress Control system seen in the bigger Range Rovers and is a traction-optimizing form of cruise control which works at speeds up to 30km/h to make off-road driving easier.New active safety features have also been added, including AEB, lane-keep assist and attention assist which detects when a driver is at risk of falling asleep .The updated Range Rover Evoque is expected to arrive in Australia in the first quarter of 2016. 

Previously only seen on larger Range Rovers, the ‘Autobiography’ trim level is being introduced across the Evoque range bringing increased levels style and exclusivity. There’s also a new ‘Autobiography Dynamic’ model which -- you guessed it - is designed to be more performance orientated with increased dynamic ability.The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is tuned to 209kW – up 32kW – and 400Nm of torque – up 60Nm – in the Dynamic for more spritely performance. The Evoque’s nine-speed automatic gearbox has also been recalibrated to respond more keenly to driver inputs.Naturally, the suspension has been fiddled with, too. Upgraded suspension geometry, firmer spring rates and recalibrated dampers are said to increase agility and turn in response, but without impacting ride comfort. Land Rover say the steering has also been retuned for the Dynamic, giving extra precision. Brake discs have also grown to 350mm at the front.The Autobiography trim level without the ‘Dynamic’ part is available in both three and four-door body styles with any powertrain. The top-shelf model grade features redesigned 20-inch wheels, a lower and more aggressive front bumper, plus ‘Autobiography’ badging. Autobiography cars are also available in high visibility jacket-style Phoenix Orange paint, which cannot be optioned on lesser models.Land Rover is also debuting a world-first technology across the Range Rover Evoque range dubbed ‘InControl Apps.’ This technology allows vehicle-optimized smartphone apps to be displayed and controlled through the car’s touch screen.Director of Land Rover Programmes, said, "the introduction of Land Rover InControl Apps together with the new range-topping Autobiography and Autobiography Dynamic derivatives, takes the Range Rover Evoque's core strengths a step further, bringing increased connectivity, desirability, luxury and dynamic ability to the already successful line-up." The Range Rover Evoque Autobiography and Autobiography Dynamic will make their public debuts at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. 

Land Rover's medium-sized Evoque -- currently the smallest SUV in their family -- has been a smash hit for the brand around the world. But with tightening emissions standards in many markets, they're likely to add an even smaller vehicle to the range.We may be getting a hint of that with their trademarking the name Landy, which is a common nickname for their vehicles, but in this case is tipped to be applied to a future baby SUV, according to Autocar, who added that a previous business case to build something with styling from the DC100 concept may have been revived.The baby crossover would likely use the Evoque's front-wheel drive, on-demand 4WD and constant 4WD systems -- if it has any all-paw aspect at all -- and would be pitched to do battle with what has become a growing, and lucrative segment. That would see it face off against the coming Jeep Jeepster and Audi Q1, the BMW X1 and the Mini Countryman.The line-up would be expected to echo the Evoque's 110kW.380Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel with a six-speed manual and nine-speed auto, and 177kW/340Nm 2.0litre turbocharged petrol four with the auto.The trademark will cover everything from vehicles to accessories, models, clothing and signage, which could however also suggest they are simply trying to protect what has become the popular name with fans over the years, to prevent anybody else using it for marketing.This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

(Approximately from $50,000)Nissan Pathfinder hybrid: Nissan will complete its new Pathfinder SUV lineup in the second quarter, with the addition of a new petrol-electric hybrid variant to help silence the naysayers lamenting the lack of a diesel option in the new model. The 187kW/329Nm hybrid drivetrain uses a 15kW electric motor paired with a supercharged 2.5 litre four cylinder petrol engine, resulting in a claimed 25 per cent fuel efficiency gain. (Approximately $55,000-$60,000)Nissan X-Trail: Nissan will replace its hugely successful X-Trail medium SUV in about July, with the bigger design offering seating for seven for the first time, and improved refinement to go with its softened exterior design. (Approximately $30,000-$47,000)Skoda Octavia Scout: The Octavia RS will be followed by the jacked-up Scout AWD variant in about mid-year. (Approximately $40,000-$45,000)Toyota Kluger: Toyota will introduce the third-generation of its Kluger large SUV in the first quarter, with the all-new larger model promising improved seating for seven and fresh styling, but its continued reliance on a petrol V6 might threaten its sales success next to the diesel and hybrid options offered by most rivals. (Approximately $70,000)CONVERTIBLESBMW 4 Series convertible: The folding hardtop version of BMW’s 4-Series coupe is expected by March, and echo its hardtop sibling with 420d, 428i, and 435i drivetrains. The new model, due 2016, would fill the gap between the standard five-seater Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, but would be based on the next generation Evoque rather than the current one.Autocar reports that the larger Evoque will use Jaguar’s new all-aluminium platform as seen in the C-X17 crossover concept. This signals the next generation’s intentions to save weight over the current model, despite the addition of over 300mm in length in the seven-seater version.The aluminium structure also has significantly more torsional rigidity than the current platform, increasing the appeal for off roaders and handling enthusiasts alike. The new Evoque could also spawn the brand’s new four cylinder units which are currently being developed.When it arrives, the baby Range Rover could become the smallest premium four wheel drive with a seven-seat option, opening another niche for the British off road brand. The company has also been targeting Rolls Royce and Bentley at the higher end of the market, with a long wheelbase Range Rover Vogue also scheduled for next year.If you can’t wait until the larger Evoque launches though, Land Rover may have another small seven-seater solution – if you can wait until the end of next year. The next generation Freelander will be due then, and indications are that the brand’s entry level model will feature a seven-seat option, although will likely miss out on the aluminium structure of its premium Evoque sibling.
