Ford is likely to close its Geelong and Broadmeadows factories before 2016 and shut the car industry overnight, a union has warned. Dave Smith, the head of the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union's vehicle division, said that Ford's future was unclear."While Toyota and Holden seem to be quite genuine that they want to stay until 2017 and build cars, Ford's position is not as clear," he said. "The component industry is fragile. It can fall over at any moment." Mr Smith said he also feared cuts to the Automotive Transition Scheme in next month's Federal Budget. "If they decide to drop off on that, then it will be over very quickly," he said.Holden and Toyota have both vowed to stay until 2017. Ford said its aim was still to stay on until the planned closure in October 2016. "Our aim is to continue manufacturing until October 2016," Ford spokesman Neil McDonald said. "We are committed to the new Falcon and Territory models and they will be on sale at the end of the year."Victorian Manufacturing Minister David Hodgett said he'd had no indication that Ford would close early, but it would depend on sales. "In all my discussions with Ford, they've given every indication they'll be here to the end. Of course, this is dependent on sales figures, and I encourage all Victorians to continue to buy Australian-made cars, including Ford."The imminent threat of Ford's closure will also put pressure on the Federal Government to bring forward a $100 million package to help sacked car workers. Discussions on the fund, announced after Holden pulled the pin in December, were delayed after Toyota also announced its closure here.Ford's 1350 workers make Falcon and Territory models. But just 641 Falcon and 900 Territory vehicles were sold in March. Ford is facing hundreds of millions of dollars of losses if it stays to 2016 and rolls out a new Falcon model in August.

Ford lifts capped service to seven years

Ford says their capped price service offer, MyFord, has been successful in bringing thousands of owners back to the brand -- 13,000 in 2013 alone. So they're taking the offer further, raising it to seven years and 135,000km from the six years/105,000km that rolled out in 2011.The revised program -- available on vehicles built from 2007 -- has been extended to cover brake pad replacements and rotor machining across the range except the sporty FPV, ST and XR5 variants and the light commercial Transit van. All eligible models will have front pads capped at $259 and rear ones at $219, except the rear-wheel drive Falcon and Territory rear pads, which will be capped at $259. Toyota and Ford now in family-car war

The battle between Australia’s ailing car manufacturers has spilled onto the showroom floor, with car giant Toyota literally circling its imported wagons to fill the void left by Ford’s factory closure. Toyota has begun importing the Kluger SUV from North America, taking advantage of a Free Trade Agreement that eliminates a 5 per cent tariff, in an attempt to take sales away from the Australian-made class-leader, the Ford Territory.The Ford Territory, which will cease production when Australia’s oldest car factory closes by the end of 2016, has led the family-sized SUV market for all but three of the past 10 years. The only vehicle that has ever managed to topple the Ford Territory is the Toyota Kluger.An imported Ford Territory replacement is still three years away, which is why Toyota is trying to claim the early ground in the lucrative seven-seater family wagon market. The new Kluger that arrives in local showrooms this week is the first Toyota sold in Australia to come from North America.But Toyota’s shift to sourcing the Kluger from a factory in Indiana to take advantage of the Free Trade Agreement may initially backfire, as the plant cannot ship enough cars because domestic demand is so strong. “We clearly see the Territory as a competitor,” said the executive director of Toyota Australia sales and marketing, Tony Cramb.However, Mr Cramb said the company would be “supply constrained” in the coming months as the factory ramps up right-hand-drive production. Toyota says the Kluger is important “because of the type of buyers it brings into its showrooms”.“One in five buyers is in their 30s, more than half are under the age of 45," said Mr Cramb. "We see a lot of families and a significant proportion of these couples have children in primary and secondary schools. It’s important because these buyers are younger than our average (buyer) age, and it’s important to make sure we have something for everyone.” Car companies target younger buyers because it means they can sell them more new vehicles as they age.The new Kluger range starts at $40,990 and all models come with seven seats, seven airbags, a rear camera and rear parking sensors. The middle of the range GXL is $49,990 and the top-of the range model costs $63,990 (an increase of $2500). All-wheel-drive adds $4000 to each model. A hybrid or a diesel version is not available and the company says there are no current plans to introduce them.A clever feature that was unveiled on the US version of the new Toyota Kluger -- which projects the driver’s voice to the audio speakers at the back -- is not available on Australian models. Toyota Australia product planning executive Mark Dobson said the US version of the Kluger came with a different radio that embedded the “My Voice” function. “If it proves to be a popular feature (on overseas models) we can adopt it later,” said Mr Dobson.This reporter is on Twitter: @JoshuaDowling

The seven seater four wheel drive will likely be named ‘Everest’. Like the Ranger ute it’s based on, it’s developed by Ford Australia, whose design, research and development capability is expected to continue operating locally beyond manufacturing close down in 2016.The Territory rear end on this production test mule disguises a shorter wheelbase than the Ranger, which should make the Everest more manoeuvrable and agile on and off road. Like its rival, the Holden Colorado 7, the Ford is expected to upgrade the Ranger’s leaf springs and drum brakes to a live axle coil suspension setup and rear disc brakes.This should make the ride more passenger friendly, with the possibility of Ford adopting an independent rear suspension setup also an option. This would make the development more costly, but would favour passenger comfort and handling on road.A passenger version of the previous generation Ford Ranger has been in production in Thailand for several years, carrying the Everest name in that local market. But this is the first time the Everest SUV, which will be assembled in Thailand, will feature a smaller wheelbase and the expected suspension, brake and cabin refinement and passenger safety updates to make the SUV a competitive product in the global Ford portfolio.Like the Ranger, the Everest will be sold in European, American and Asia-pacific countries. No details have been revealed about engine and powertrain options, but expect little or no change to Ford’s 147kW 3.2-litre 5 cylinder Turbo diesel unit and 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions for our market. Ford’s 110kW 2.2-litre Turbo diesel, and 122kW 2.5-litre petrol may also feature in overseas models, but both are unlikely to make it to Australian showrooms.Low range is almost certain to continue too, making the Everest the most off road capable passenger four wheel drive offered by Ford Australia since the late 80s Maverick. A rear wheel drive model may also be on the cards, lowering the entry level price for families who don’t need the extra off road capability.Expect the Everest to launch in the second half of 2014, when the new model will need to win over the hearts of families and off road enthusiasts alike. The segment is currently dominated by the Toyota Prado with over 1000 sales per month, but it’s the soft roaders like the Ford Territory, Toyota Kluger, Holden Captiva 7 and Hyundai Santa Fe that make up the majority of sales combined, making passenger accommodation an important success factor.However, it’s the other ute-based passenger SUVs that will feel the heat of increased rivalry, with the Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Challenger squarely on Ford’s radar. Ford may gain some sales from Territory buyers too, once manufacturing of the local SUV stops in 2016. Territory’s likely replacement, the Ford Edge, is not available with a Diesel engine, meaning customers wishing to buy a diesel four wheel drive Ford will need to turn to the Everest.

As Ford Australia prepares to cease Australian manufacturing in 2016, the recently revealed Edge SUV concept at the Los Angeles motor show has been whispered to replace the Territory once doors close.The Edge would sit between the small Kuga and the larger Everest and is likely to have a platform based on the Mondeo.
