The three-door hatch will be the only bodystyle to lob in 2014, with convertible and a new five-door hatch (at least) to follow later. (Approximately $31,000-$46,000)SMALL CARSAudi A3 sedan: Audi will add a sedan version of its A3 small car to the existing Sportback hatch lineup from January, with the hot S3 version to follow in April, and the drop-top A3 Cabriolet (from about $57k) to complete the lineup in about September. (Approximately $65,000)BMW 2 Series: The discontinued 1 Series coupe will be replaced by the new 2 Series coupe in around May, and will likely mirror the petrol and diesel drivetrains of the existing 1 Series hatch. Improvements to safety, features, and efficiency are expected, and should be a winner if the smaller new Rondo is anything to go by. (Approximately $35,000-$45,000)Isuzu MU-X: Isuzu will introduce the seven-seat MU-X in January, with the company’s first SUV sharing much of its design with the D-Max ute and Holden Colorado and Colorado 7 models. The MU-X will be equipped with the same 3.0-litre diesel engine as the D-Max, and offer family 4WD toughness for a lot less than Toyota’s Prado. (Approximately $40,500-$53,500)Kia Sorento: The final Kia model for 2014 is likely to be a significantly revamped Sorento seven-seat SUV, with a comprehensive design update inside and out to bring it in line with the fresher styling of its Hyundai Santa Fe mechanical twin. (Approximately $38,000-$51,000)Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: The stylish Range Rover Evoque is due for an update before June, with a new nine-speed auto delivering fuel economy gains of about 10 per cent, plus styling tweaks to bring it in line with the new full-size Range Rover and Sport models. (Approximately $50,000-$91,000)Mercedes-Benz GLA: Mercedes will bring the new A-Class-based GLA SUV to our shores in May, with the all-new model taking the fight to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 in the premium compact SUV segment. Priced from about $45,000, the GLA will be available in front or 4MATIC all-wheel drive and engines from launch will include the 115kW/250Nm 1.6-litre GLA200 and 155kW/350Nm 2.0-litre GLA250 petrols, and 100kW/300Nm 2.2-litre GLA200 CDI and 125kW/350Nm 2.2-litre GLA220 CDI turbodiesel options. (Approximately from $45,000)Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Mitsubishi will introduce its first hybrid model in April, in the form of the plug-in hybrid Outlander SUV. Priced from about $50,000, the Outlander PHEV promises Holden Volt-rivalling efficiency for about $10,000 less, and wrapped within a more practical SUV body. (Approximately from $50,000)Nissan Pathfinder hybrid: Nissan will complete its new Pathfinder SUV lineup in the second quarter, with the addition of a new petrol-electric hybrid variant to help silence the naysayers lamenting the lack of a diesel option in the new model. The 187kW/329Nm hybrid drivetrain uses a 15kW electric motor paired with a supercharged 2.5 litre four cylinder petrol engine, resulting in a claimed 25 per cent fuel efficiency gain. (Approximately $55,000-$60,000)Nissan X-Trail: Nissan will replace its hugely successful X-Trail medium SUV in about July, with the bigger design offering seating for seven for the first time, and improved refinement to go with its softened exterior design. (Approximately $30,000-$47,000)Skoda Octavia Scout: The Octavia RS will be followed by the jacked-up Scout AWD variant in about mid-year. A more upmarket Preve LE is expected at around the same time, and likely to be priced around the $25,000 mark.Renault Megane: Also due around June is a mid-cycle refresh for the Megane coupe, cabriolet, and wagon models. The year is 1979 and I'm driving in a giant Falcon cavalcade through the streets of Melbourne, with a police escort and every junction blocked as if I was part of a Presidential motorcade. The XD Falcon is the biggest news in the country, even though the giant family fighter is being launched at a time when the world is downsizing its wheels in the wake of global energy crises and Holden has a bright new star with its first Commodore. Ford Australia is on the front foot and the Blue Oval's global boss and family patriach Henry Ford II has landed in Melbourne to put his personal stamp on the XD and talk about his company's aggressive plans for the future. Now it's Tuesday, this week, and I'm one of 850 invited guests at a $4 million Ford function in Sydney billed as 'Go Further - Vision for Australia'. It's a vision without the Falcon and this time the fly-in heroes are Ford's three amigos - global president Alan Mullaly,  chief operating officer Mark Fields and marketing boss Jim Farley. They're all talking big about a future for Ford in Australia with lots of new cars, lots of fresh thinking, and a new focus on customer relationships. Each takes the spotlight to introduce the new models, including the Transit vans and the mid-sized Mondeo that must do a much better job against the Toyota Camry in the mid-sized class. But there are no real answers to a range of questions, including the future of Ford Performance Vehicles and V8 Supercars racing, and no deviation from the prepared message that's been tailored to bring cheers and clapping from Ford employees and dealers. When Carsguide asks about the real future for the Falcon, from the planned facelift in 2014 through to the end of production in 2016, Alan Mullaly is short and not-so sweet. "That's the plan," he says. The Falcon and Territory die soon and Ford is switching to a fully imported lineup, from the baby Fiesta ST to the Mustang as the halo car. The Everest is the real hero, because the seven-seater SUV has been designed and developed in Australia, even though it will be built in Thailand. There is plenty of razzle-dazzle, including a mocked-up "showroom of the future", but no chance to drive any of the promises and no talk about the people in Melbourne who will lose their jobs. As I walk away from the 'Go Further' event I can see what Ford Australia is planning, and the commitment to its new future. But I'm also asking what would be happening in 2013 if the same cash and confidence and commitment that gave us the XD Falcon in 1979 had been applied by savvy management and smart salespeople in the days between then and now. Ford’s Falcon EcoBoost obviously wants to be zoomed into the viral world. And what better way to do so than with two talking cane toads? Amphibian buddies, Ralphie and Les are the new face of Ford’s online-only video promoting the recent Falcon EcoBoost launch. Focusing on humour and clear messaging, Ford has stepped into the viral world in an attempt to further connect with their already fiercely loyal followers – a move that has surprised many. And surprise is what they’re aiming for. Yes, the Falcon EcoBoost is surprisingly quiet, the marketing avenue is surprising and – wait for it – the video has a comical surprise ending. Enjoy.  

Certification of the new EcoBoost Falcon was done with premium 95-octane unleaded fuel but the car can happily run on a more basic brew.  Standard 91-octane petrol is fine for the car and will potentially save around $150 a year at the pump, based on Carsguide figures.  Although it does take the edge off the performance very slightly, the man who led EcoBoost engine development work for the Ford fighter says only a tiny number of people would notice. "The difference is less than five per cent. It's less than a customer would pick," David Mitchell, who heads powertrain development at Ford Australia, reveals to Carsguide. He also says he would be happy to run an EcoBoost Falcon on standard unleaded. "I'd stick 91 in it. Every time. I's absolutely engineered for 91," he says. The EcoBoost Falcon is the latest in a growing global range of green cars from Ford that put an efficiency twist on small-capacity turbocharged engines. BMW and Fiat also have their EfficientDynamics and MultiAir green leaders, but Ford eventually plans to have an EcoBoost engine for every model from the baby Fiesta - which has a 1.0-litre EcoBoost in Europe that's also coming to Australia - through to the hulking F-Series truck, which has a 3.6-litre V6 EcoBoost engine that's the most popular choice today in the USA. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine in the Falcon is already fitted to a wide range of models in Europe - from the Ford Mondeo to the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC60 - but there has been extensive local development work including durability testing in the USA. The final result - using 95-octane unleaded - is 179 kiloWatts of power and 353 Newton-metres of torque, with a combined fuel economy figure of 8.1 litres/100km. Dropping back to 91 unleaded only costs 2.5 kiloWatts and three Newton-metres, although the torque peak of 350 Newton-metres rises from 2000 to 3000 revs. Mitchell says Ford  was obliged to do its certification work on the EcoBoost Falcon with premium unleaded and all the press, promotional and advertising figures are based on the results. However, he is a strong advocate for 91 unleaded in the car. "You do ge a small benefit in performance with 95, but 91 is still regarded as a cost-effective choice," he says.  

But Joe Hinrichs, the vice president of Ford Motor Company and its president for Asia Pacific and Africa, admits the Falcon -- which recorded dismal sales in 2011 -- “can do better’’. Hinrichs won’t be drawn into discussing a possible replacement of Falcon with an imported, front-wheel drive sedan. “Don’t underestimate the importance of Falcon and Territory to us,’’ he says at a Carsguide interview at the opening of the 2012 Delhi motor show where Ford unveiled a new Fiesta-based SUV. While Hinrichs supports the Falcon and says “it’s a great car’’, he is acutely aware that a sub-20,000 sales figure may not be tolerated for long. “At the moment, at our current investment in Falcon, we can sustain the sales of Falcon,’’ he says. “Not forever, however, but at this moment it is sustainable." “It’s still an important part of our company. We have invested in Falcon and have the EcoBoost model coming, and we have substantially upgraded Territory.’’ Mr Hinrichs blames the fall in Falcon sales to issues including the shrinking large car segment “and our share of that getting smaller’’, and a need for it to “do better’’ with its fleet business. “Overall, Ford sales (in Australia) have done well,’’ he says. “But Falcon sales have eroded these improvements. We have to shore up Falcon and Territory and grow the products. That will come via product such as the EcoSport (SUV). “I think you’ll find a stabilisation of Falcon sales. We have the potential to see the end of the decline. Falcon sales can only continue to fall for so long.’’ But Mr Hinrichs admits that he “doesn’t know where the (large car) segment is going to go. People are looking for alternatives and I think that Territory has more potential to rebound than Falcon.’’

The good news is that the cars of the future are not boring electric "golf carts" but sleek and sexy machines.Take for example the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept, or even the updated Toyota Prius C. Just as smart, but also featuring powertrain technology that is much further down the line, is the Hyundai Blue2 Concept, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, or the Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV with a plug-in hybrid system that extends the use of the vehicle in electric mode.Here is a sample of the green vehicles on the stands at this year’s show:BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept: Making its Australian debut, this is the concept for the coming BMW i8. A conventional 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-diesel mated to a pair of electric motors powers this four-wheel-drive 2+2 sports car. The hybrid combination pumps out 265kW of power and 800Nm of torque, and can run on electric power alone for up to 50km, diesel only for 645km or a combination of both. The lithium-ion battery packs charge in just 2.5 hours from AC mains or 44 minutes on quick charge.Ford: The new Liquefied Phase Injection LPG technology in the Ford Falcon EcoLPi has improved power and torque and decreased fuel consumption (12.5L/100km) and CO2 emissions (203g/km). Ford will also show its long-awaited diesel Territory with a 2.7-litre V6 boasting fuel economy of 8.2L/100km.Holden: The Ecoline Series II Cruze range with a new generation 2.0-litre turbo diesel (5.6L/100km) is Australia’s most fuel-efficient locally-built car. The stand will also feature the Cruze 1.4-litre intelligent turbo induction (1.4 iTi) petrol engine (6.4L/100km manual) and other Ecoline models, including the Commodore E85 flex-fuel and Spark Ignition Direct Injection V6 powered Commodores and Captivas.Honda hybrids: Honda will show the stylish Honda CR-Z coupe petrol-electric hybrid that arrives here later this year, as well as its second-generation Insight hybrid.Hyundai Blue2 Concept: This is the Korean company’s first sedan-style Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) powered by hydrogen. It delivers power of 90kW and fuel economy of 2.8L/100km. Being a concept car, it comes with a host of future electronic aids, such as an automatic opening door system, roof and side cameras to replace mirrors, and a motion sensor-operated infotainment system.Lexus LF-Gh Concept: This concept features the hybrid system already in the Lexus fleet, but is the first time the spindle-shaped grille that will become a feature of future designs will be seen here, and hints at a future grand touring sedan. Lexus Australia chief executive Tony Cramb says the LF-Gh reaffirms that hybrids can be sleek and stylish.Mazda Minagi: This is a crossover concept specifically engineered to be the first with frugal SKYACTIV technology diesel and petrol engines and transmission. The car is an insight into the coming CX-5.Mercedes-Benz C-Class: The range now includes the updated 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission for improved economy. Diesel models come with the ECO start/stop function as standard, and the C250 diesel coupe boasts economy of 5.1L/100km. At the top end of the Benz range, the S350 diesel BlueTec luxury saloon has economy figures of 7L/100km.Mitsubishi ?i-Miev-based electric vehicle concepts: The i-MiEV is about to hit the showrooms and Mitsubishi already has an SUV variant, which will be on its stand. The Concept PX-MiEV has a plug-in hybrid system with fuel economy better than 2L/100km. It is powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors and a 1.6-litre MIVEC engine. The PX-MiEV also features Smart Grid technology that allows the battery to power home appliances during a blackout or at peak times when electricity tariffs are high.Nissan Leaf: The all-electric Leaf hits showrooms next year. The World Car of the Year features a satnav system linked to the "Global Data Centre’’ in Japan so you just press a button to find the closest recharging stations.Toyota Prius C concept & Prius V: The latest in the Prius family are a funky coupe concept (C) and a people mover (V). The Prius C concept shows how stylish the Prius can be and the V shows how spacious it can be. The V also features a lightweight-resin panoramic moon roof, weighing about 40 per cent less than a regular glass roof of the same size. It will be the first to feature Toyota’s new Entune multimedia system with mobile internet and Microsoft’s Bing search engine. The system will offer live weather and traffic updates, along with monitoring the best fuel prices in town.Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion: The BlueMotion has the same 1.6-litre engine with the same output at 77kW and 250Nm as the 77TDI, but its fuel use is just 3.8L/100km compared with 5.12L/100km (77TDI) and CO2 of 99g/km (133g/km 77TDI). The gains are made from a lower idle speed, stop/start technology, aerodynamics and low rolling resistance tyres.Volvo V60 diesel plug-in hybrid: The world’s first diesel hybrid plug-in goes into production next year. The driver can choose from three modes: Pure, which is all-electric with a range of up to 50km, Hybrid with an average fuel consumption of 1.9L/100km and CO2 of 49g/km, and Power, which boosts total diesel and electric power to 200kW and 640Nm of torque with acceleration to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds. The turbodiesel drives the front wheels and an electric motor drives the rear axle. It can be recharged via a regular power socket in 4.5 hours on 10A charge.PLUS: There will also be displays by infrastructure companies including Better Place EV, which has announced plans to begin rolling out infrastructure in Canberra this year.

 As cars have been stockpiled on grass in recent weeks, and Falcon sales have failed to recover from a massive slump in January, the company has been forced to act to match its supply to showroom demand. It is reducing daily output at Broadmeadows from 260 to just 209 cars - equivalent to 45,000 a year - and the workforce is being reduced to match the load. Ford says it will re-deploy as many workers as possible, with the remainder to be offered voluntary redundancy packages. But Ford insists there is no threat to its local manufacturing operation. "We are committed to the Ford brand and continuing to produce vehicles in Australia," the chairman of Ford Australia, Bob Graziano, said yesterday. He also insists the company is hard at work on the scope and design of the next Falcon. Ford's production cut is a permanent reaction to a showroom slide which has seen large-car sales in Australia dropping consistently over the past 10 years. The Holden Commodore is still the country's favourite car, but has occasionally been trumped in monthly sales totals by the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3 over the past two years, as overall sales in the class have dropped by 53 per cent over the decade. Ford has been using 'down days' to reduce its production over the past six months but is now acting on a permanent cut, even though it is expecting more demand soon for its updated - and finally diesel-  powered - Territory SUV. "Ford is committed to making the necessary changes to ensure we are producing what Australian drivers want and value, which drives the viability of our business," Graziano said. Ford is trying to highlight the potential upside for both the Territory and Falcon, which will get a new LPG engine later this year and a four-cylinder EcoBoost motor in the first quarter of 2012. But the potential boost in showrooms is too far into the future for Ford. "We've been investigating this for the last few months. We've been looking at the segment and where it's been going," said Ford spokesperson, Sinead McAlary. "It's not just us doing it. Toyota and Holden are also using 'down days'." The redundancies at Ford are the first since the end of 2008. "We copped a fair amount of flak then but it was the right thing to do, and it allowed us to return to profitability in 2009," McAlary said. Ironically, Ford's move comes in the same week that Toyota is reducing its production at Altona in Melbourne and after Holden reported a $112 million - and a $223 million turnaround - in its financial results for 2010.

The dedicated gas Falcon is also good news for anyone hit by the rising price of petrol. The EcoLPi liquid phase injection promises zero compromises for the Falcon's six-cylinder engine, right up to the XR6, with  27 per more power and 10 per cent more torque than previous E-Gas LPG system and fuel consumption cut by 12-15 per cent. The new-age LPG system is coming a little late, a delay put down to the engineering load at Broadmeadows for the global T6 pickup development program, but nothing like the six-month overrun on the EcoBoost four-cylinder Falcon that won't hit showrooms until January 2012. Ford says it is using the most up-to-date LPG technology available, with much-improved operation and driveability than the previous ventur-  style vapour system fitted to its E-Gas Falcons. The heart of the system is an injection system that is similar to a conventional petrol engine, using a high-pressure fuel rail that delivers liquid LPG directly to the intake port. So there is no gas conversion before the liquid is fired into the cylinder for combustion. The system is also more controlled and efficient, which provides the boost to performance while also cutting consumption and CO2 emissions. "Falcon EcoLPi offers customers the power, torque and overall engine performance they expect from a traditional Aussie six ... while at the same time delivering the fuel costs of a smaller car," says the president of Ford Australia, Bob Graziano. Ford has yet to reveal the exact economy of the LPG system or the pricing.
