Citroen C4 Picasso and DS Rubis a chance

The two great looking new Citroens are under consideration as the French brand looks to win converts down under. The five-seater C4 Picasso has re-emerged as a likely starter for families while the DS Wild Rubis concept tops the wish list after its unveiling for the Shanghai motor show. The compact Picasso was originally dismissed in favour of the seven-seater Grand Picasso people mover that's already a long-term member of the Citroen family here, but has re-emerged as contender following a body update. The Wild Rubis is only a long shot because its development is focused on China, but Australia's plan for a DS-driven sales push means it would be a natural if it is available. "We want to build the brand and that means we're looking at everything," the head of Citroen Australia, John Startari, tells Carsguide.Citroen has just re-launched under a new distributor and plans to grow its sales by 35 per cent in the short term, with double-digit improvements over coming years, based on the strengths of the French cars. Startari says he was very impressed when he saw the C4 Picasso in Paris and has launched an investigation on its suitability for Australia. "It's not something we should discard, because there are significant changes."I saw it in France last week and it's on-brand," he says. "We don't have pricing yet, and that makes it harder, but it was a definite no and now it's a possible."We still haven't made a final decision, but I guess it's the inclusion of a lot of technology and the styling of the car that merits investigation."The Grand Picassos has already had an update with styling along similar lines."Included in the Picasso update are a 'loft-style' cabin with added space, twin touch-screen displays, park assist, active seat belts and even ultrasonic blind spot monitoring. Startari believes the Wild Rubis would have a surefire hit in Australia but is not confident it will be built with right-hand drive."I think it's a very exciting prospect. Coming out of China would mean that it's left-hand drive, so we'd need a business case for right-hand drive. And the largest right-hand drive market is the UK."The stylish SUV is clearly intended for DS production, although its 21-inch alloys and plug-in hybrid driveline might struggle for showroom approval. Citroen says it "points to a future DS SUV" and it's likely the concept will be transferred to the road within two years, with its basic 4.7-metre bodywork unchanged.Still, Startari is not getting over-excited. "We really have no information yet on the Wild Rubis. I cannot speculate because nothing has come through officially," he says. But he is looking forward to delivering an expanded Citroen range to Australian buyers. "It's great to be part of something that has this ability to do things differently. Cars are being traded as commodities now, regardless of the brand, and people are looking for something different."There is a relevant, visible point of difference at Citroen. And that's refreshing, as well as giving us the opportunity to do something different."This reporter is on Twitter @paulwardgover

...actually wind back its adventurous looks. The new Picasso is coming at the Paris Motor Show in September but this Carparazzi picture points to a more conventional big-box design, although it has trendy turbine-design alloys and retains the small window behind the A-pillar that's a signature of the current C4.

The newly-crowned Carsguide COTY, the Kia Rio, leads the latest group of five-star safety cars in Australia.A dozen safety standouts have joined the fives, from the Audi A1 to the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet, but the rules will change radically in 2012 as ANCAP demands more protection for new-car buyers."The hurdle to get into the five-star game will be higher, although the crash tests will probably be the same," says Lauchlan McIntosh, ANCAP chair. "Next year, when we start adding whiplash and some of the other 'roadmap' features, it won't be as easy to get a five-star. I think we'll see some new cars not getting five stars."In the end, the car companies will have to lift their game. We're ramping up the safety-assist technologies to get five stars. In 2008 we said you have to have ESC to get in the game. Now they'll need to have some of safety assist technologies. The manufacturers have moved. They have spent hundreds of millions."Those technologies include everything from Mercedes-Benz's Pre-Safe system which pre-primes airbags and moves seats to City Safety at Volvo and the Subaru EyeSight system that includes lane-departure warnings and active cruise control. Some brands will have individual items and others will package a suite of safety stuff."We're going to say you need a certain number," says McIntosh. He predicts a rapid uptake of new technology as well as improving results from brands which are currently failing to make the five-star grade."At the bottom end of the game there are still a few struggling. But I think the Chinese will lift their game pretty quickly, and Mahindra too. Now governments and fleets are only buying five-star cars the game is over. The ADRs are almost irrelevant. It's that purchasing that makes a difference."McIntosh says there should be another final burst of ANCAP results before the end of 2011and, without revealing any detail, predicts a couple of surprises."There will be some new results that will come out with four stars, which is a bit different to Euro NCAP. We're a bit tougher in the aggregation of the numbers. But four stars is still a good result.""We're being a bit overwhelmed by the number of five-star cars and the interest from buyers. And that's a good thing. The latest five-star winners combine the results from European NCAP testing and local results in Australia.“With the holiday period looming your choice of new car may well be a life-saver," says McIntosh.ANCAP FIVE-STAR RATINGSBMW 1 SeriesCitroen C4Citroen DS3Ford Falcon FG MkII sedan and uteHolden Captiva Series IIKia OptimaKia RioMazda BT-50Mercedes-Benz BT-50Mercedes-Benz M-ClassVW JettaVW Golf Cabriolet

The French car maker has released some pricing and specification information ahead of the new light car's showroom debut later this month, with Citroen making the somewhat odd boast that the top-spec model has "the largest windscreen ever seen on a small car," the panoramic Zenith windscreen, 35 per cent larger than a normal windscreen.
Prices will start from $19,990 for the C3 VT manual-only, the VTR+ will retail from $23,490 for the petrol/auto or $23,990 for the turbodiesel/manual. The C3 Exclusive flagship in petrol/auto will be priced from $25,990 or the turbodiesel/manual model will retail from $26,490.
The incoming C3 will go up against the Peugeot 207 and Renault's Clio, as well as the Polo from Volkswagen and Ford's inbound Thai-built Fiesta. Citroen says the C3 will be more refined than its predecessor, with three times as much sound-absorbent material than the outgoing vehicle.
The new car measures 3940mm long, 1730mm wide and 1520mm tall and will offer 300 litres of bootspace despite being shorter than much of its competition.
The little hatchback sat fourth - behind the C4, C5 and Berlingo - in terms of sales at the end of last year and instead of where perhaps it should be - in 2008 it sat second behind the C4, a position to which Citroen believes it can return with the new model.
Citroen Australia general manager Miles Williams says the C3 has been an integral part of the company's Australian line-up and the outgoing model's supply dried up in May.
"We have a considerable pent-up demand for the new model ... we have, therefore, released details of the prices and specifications ahead of the arrival of the new model so that customers can start selecting and ordering their new C3," he says.
The new car has been built with the brief of lower weight, better aerodynamics and lower emissions. The range will be offered with two petrol power-plants and one turbodiesel - the 1.6-litre 16-valve unit producing 66kW and 215Nm while claiming a combined fuel use figure of 4.3 litres per 100km will be teamed with a five-speed manual for the Exclusive model.
The two petrol engines on offer will be a 54kW/118Nm 1.4-litre 16-valve petrol engine in the VT, teamed only with a five speed manual. The VTR will be offered with the turbodiesel or the PSA/BMW joint-venture powerplant, the 1.6-litre turbocharged 16-valve engine producing 88kW and 160Nm - offer refined and economical performance.
The new C3 range will have a six-speaker sound system - with the option of an upgraded eight-speaker set-up; Bluetooth phone/audio link and a USB port are available on the options list for all models bar the Exclusive.
The new C3 safety features list will include stability control, anti-lock brakes and up to six airbags. The entry-level VT model has 15in steel wheels, an MP3-compatible sound system with wheel-mounted controls, air conditioning, power-adjustable mirrors, front power windows and a trip computer.
The VTR+ adds curtain airbags, front fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, cooled glove box and cruise control with speed limiter; the Exclusive adds climate control, power windows front and rear, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, folding and heated door mirrors and 16in alloy wheels.

Due to arrive here in the third quarter of 2011 – along with its youth-targeting DS4 sibling – the C4 noses in with the new family chevron grille and rear gate, and redesigned bumpers and light clusters, with the interior getting a trim makeover and new technology in the entertainment and communications departments, including the ‘eTouch’ emergency assistance system.
A second-generation stop-start system and brake energy recovery combine to make all the new C4s micro-hybrids, allied to either the 120kW and 155kW petrol engines or the 110kw and 150kW turbodiesels.

And in traditional French fashion, the newest Citroen is designed to pamper its occupants. Among some of its gimmicks is an in-car choice of different colours for the instrument display and a function that allows the driver to select their own polyphonic sound alerts. Some models will even be available with a massage function on the front seats. Like other new European cars the C4 gets a host of new technologies, including a blind-spot monitoring system, a cornering light system, cruise control and speed-limiter with road speed memory settings and an innovative new service called eTouch.eTouch enables drivers to monitor their driving patterns and fuel consumption and receive advice on how to improve their fuel economy. The system also constantly monitors the car's technical status and remind drivers of any maintenance or servicing requirements. The French newcomer ditches the quirky design of the current car, including the fix-centre steering wheel, opting for a more conventional look and a more upmarket cabin. The hatch is 50mm longer, 20mm wider and 30mm taller than the current car and will be available in Europe with a range of new micro-hybrid e-HDI engines. These have the latest generation stop/start ignitions and C02 emissions as low as 109g/km. Michelin Energy Saver tyres are also specified to help achieve these low emissions and to boost fuel economy. The latest C4 gains a 408-litre boot, which Citroen says is the biggest in its class, with square dimensions and a lower sill to make loading even easier. The C4 also uses 15 per cent green materials to enhance its environmental credentials. The hatch will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September and is expected on sale here next year.

The successor to the Xsara is best know as the unbeaten World Rally Championship mount for fantastically fast Frenchman Sebastian Loeb, although most C4 deliveries in Australia are nothing like his $1.2 million hand-built turbo coupe. Now the C4 is heading for a complete re-make, although it's hard to see anything at all in these Carparazzi scoop pictures from rural France. The bodywork is completely covered in black-plastic drapery to disguise any sign of the C4's shape, even though it is expected to be an evolution of the current chic look. The headlamps, at least, are partly visible and so is the general look. The car will continue as a four or five-door hatch, but there is a surprise in the C4's future ...Just like the latest development of the baby C3, the funky DS model, there will be a design driven DS4 sidekick for the regular C4.The DS4 is likely to be shown as early as the Geneva Motor Show in March, giving enough space before the official preview of the C4 on the Citroen stand at the Paris auto show in September ahead of sales in 2011. Then again, Citroen could easily delay the DS4 so it does not take too much attention away from the C4.Apart from the bodywork, Carparazzi in Europe reports the upcoming C4 could be fitted with the diesel-electric hybrid power pack which is expected to be fitted to the company's leading-edge RCZ performance coupe.
