Detroit Motor Show - analysis
By Paul Gover · 15 Jan 2009
News cruisers are parked-up and beaming pictures before 6am as the temperature hovers around minus 10 and snow flurries drift through the pre-dawn blackness.By 9am there are union workers carrying placards in support of the Big Three outside Cobo Hall in downtown motown, as the great and the good from the world's motor industry arrive for the first major event of 2009.The buzz is down from recent years, with less security and fewer journalists jetting in for the action, but still there are major unveilings, technology, important speeches and so much more over the first two days. The North American International Motor Show is more than just glitz and glamour for General Motors, Ford and Chrysler in 2009 - this is the day when they have to deliver for the first time on the promises in Washington which have earned a government-backed rescue package. That means GM opens the action with a rolling cavalcade of 17 models which promise exactly what the government wants - hybrids, electric cars and regular production models which do better than 10 litres/100km in fuel economy. The headliner once again is the Chevrolet Volt, except this time it is wrapped in Cadillac bodywork and called the Converj - with the added bonus of a plug-in connection to its onboard battery system.Lexus is next and does its number around the brand's first dedicated hybrid, the HS250h, which was originally only planned for America but will now go to more than 80 countries. Then Ford becomes the second of the Big Three to present its position for 2010 and beyond, with an all-new Taurus family car - perhaps a pointer to something on the Falcon front - and the promise of an all-new electric car with a 160-kilometre range by 2011.Company chairman Bill Ford takes the stand to deliver on the company's promises to Washington, even though it was the only local not to take a multi-billion dollar loan."Ford is heading in the direction America and our customers want us to go, which is a green, high-tech and global future. I think that is where society would like to see the entire industry go, and Ford is going to lead that charge," Ford says. Then Chrysler, which many American analysts believe cannot survive the global economic meltdown, gets its turn and does a top job with the great looking new 200C family car and a range of electrics which shows it has not given up hope. It's best looker is the Dodge Circuit, which is most like a battery-powered Lotus sports car."The Dodge Circuit EV offers an extremely fun-to-drive, expressive sports car without fuel consumption and with virtually no impact on the environment,” says the vice-president of design at Dodge, Ralph Gilles.By now, after just two hours of the first press preview day, the pattern for Detroit '09 is set.The home team is going big on the cars it needs to make - even if Americans are still buying BIG with the drop in pump petrol prices - but there is more sizzle than steak because they have started way behind the Japanese and Europeans. And Cobo Hall looks sparse. There are fewer brands, fewer cars and none of the bold-and-brassy unveilings - Chrysler has always led the world in motor show stunts - which have been a signature of the Detroit show.“All I know is we took about 50 per cent out of the cost of our stand,” says the car boss at General Motors, Bob Lutz.“We took away a lot of the structures, such as salad bowl-shaped Saturn stands, and towers with holographic displays.”But he still applies some positive spin as everyone talks up the chances for the Big Three, even in the face of a selloff of the Hummer and Saab divisions at GM.“The fact that we don’t have any of that stuff gives our stand a much more businesslike and cleaner appearance. I think they cluttered up the stand. I imagine it’s going to be much the same around the show," Lutz says.As usual, the 80-plus former fighter pilot is right.BMW joins the hybrid rush at Detroit with news of its petrol-electric X6, thankfully with the all-new Z4 sportster to provide some glamour, as Volkswagen provides the best looking car of the show with its Concept BlueSport. The gorgeous VW is most like a Mazda MX-5, but promises Prius-buster fuel economy in the 4.3 litres/100km range and, without any promise of production, it clearly could have a future.“The Concept BlueSport is evolving into a car that that is a lot of fun to drive and at the same time makes an unmistakeable statement in terms of sustainability," says Volkswagen.“The Concept BlueSport is evolving into a car that that is a lot of fun to drive and at the same time makes an unmistakeable statement in terms of sustainability.”The next big mover in Cobo Hall is Kia, which shows a funky pick-up built on its baby Soul. The Soul'ster is never going to be an Aussie workhorse but will hit the Gen-Y button for America, and California in particular. As the first day in Detroit winds into darkness and more frigid weather, Subaru kicks the action with a preview of its new Liberty - called the Legacy in the USA - Jaguar runs out its high-performance R version of the landmark XF and Volvo shows the most adventurous concept car in its history, pointing to the next S60."The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise," says Volvo boss, Stephen Odell.Ford goes again to start day two at Cobo, with its Lincoln-Mercury models, then its back to Maserati and then GM pushes the home game hard with an announcement that the batteries for its Volt will be built in the USA. It's a boost for local jobs, more hard news on the Volt, and just what Washington will want before the Big Three report back on their survival plans at the end of March. And then there is a shock - at least for the Americans - as Chinese cars make the mainstream in Detroit for the first time and little-known BYD confirms it will be selling the world's first production plug-in electric car by 2010.The last big event of Detroit '09 is the one everyone already knows about - the new Toyota Prius. The list of 'firsts' is impressive as the car is unveiled, from its drag co-efficient to more luxury and a more-efficient battery system. But Honda has already undercut the third-generation Prius on price with its Insight, which is headlining for the brand in Detroit, and there is no sign of a cutting-edge lithium-ion battery pack. But the Prius has solar-powered air-conditioning to cool the car when it is parked, is bigger and quieter inside, and is certain to become the world's best selling hybrid. The car comes with more than 1000 new patents on technology and a claim of 3.9 litres/100km economy."Prius is more than a hybrid, it’s a solution. No longer is it a second car or a passing fad. In many households, it has become the primary family car," says Bob Carter of Toyota USA.There is other stuff to see in Detroit, and some things are obviously missing _ the Mercedes E-Class was an invitation-only event and Rolls-Royce is holding its all-new RR4 for the Geneva Motor Show in March - but the overall verdict on 2009 is surprisingly positive.Cars are still big news, look good and make promises of a better and more enjoyable life on the road. But the big question remains. Did the Big Three do enough, and show enough in Detroit, to convince the American government that they deserve the support it will take to get them through the biggest crisis in the history of the automobile?

Brabham is back
By Rod Halligan · 19 Nov 2008
While the big two are in serious peril and likely to go through mind warping change, Australia’s legendary marques appear to be entering a renaissance. Elfin's future looks bright under the directorship of Tom Walkinshaw, Bolwell started taking orders again last week and recently Brabham announced it is going to launch a new range of highly tuned and modified BMW's.Three models are in development, the BT92, based on an M3 and the BT60 and BT70 using the M5 and X6 as their base. Initially the re-emergence of Brabham as a tuner company might seem a bit odd but the tie in with BMW makes sense. BMW was one of the major engine partners in Brabham's illustrious history. The other significant suppliers being Coventry Climax,  Alfa and Repco. The cars are not your run of the mill bolt-on tuner packaging, they comprise extensive body and mechanical changes including new panels manufactured to race car specs in an autoclave. There has been no word of future plans past the initial three models. Nor has there been an announcement from BMW, which already has a plethora of tuning companies enhancing or degrading its cars. However while there are a few high profile names such as Schnitzer and the internal M-sport division doing their bit to Bimmer's, they have started loosing ground recently to the surging Mercedes tuner market. Mercedes, with its AMG division and partnerships with Brabus and McLaren is grabbing all the limelight. It is unfortunate that the road car side of the McLaren Mercedes partnership is waning as a new MacMerc supercar up against a Brabham-BMW supercar would be just so much fun. Given that Gordon Murray was the principal designer for Brabham in the 70's and 80’s and used the BMW engine for the F1 supercar while at McLaren, the tie ins are just so tantalising. Imagine if a BMW Brabham partnership could entice Murray to come on board and develop a true successor to the F1.Whether Brabham ties itself with BMW completely, or operates as an independent tuning/manufacturing company, the possibilities are exciting. No matter what the future plans are for Brabham, having such a fantastic Australian name back in the mix of performance cars is fantastic.Rod Halligan

BMW offers us One for the off-road
By Paul Gover · 07 Oct 2008
All-paw grip is taking a tighter hold on the BMW Group as the German luxury maker works to strengthen its key babies against the growing threat from compact SUVs.The Mini has already been previewed as an all-wheel-drive wagon called the Crossover Concept, and now BMW has revealed its X1.The 1-Series wagon is more than just a BMW body flopped over the Mini's mechanical package; BMW says the two vehicles are totally different and aimed at very different buyers. The Mini is intended for adventurous 20-somethings, whereas the Concept X1 will go into production as a safe, practical family car. There have been rumours of the X1 plan for close to two years, much as there were early leaks of BMW's plan to downsize the successful X5 wagon into the X3.Details were to be revealed at the Paris motor show, but BMW claims the X1 is an extension of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept it developed. It talks about “cool elegance, modern style and variable function” for a vehicle that's obviously a puffed-up, high-rider, 1-Series hatchback. The X1 has a similar five-door body and, like Subaru's Forester, isn't intended for serious off-road work. It's being previewed at a time when BMW is facing some tough challenges: Volvo has just put its XC60 all-wheel-drive wagon on the road; Volkswagen has a three-month waiting list for its compact Tiguan SUV; and Audi has confirmed it will have a Q5 to sit below its Q7, with the potential for a smaller Q3.The X1 Concept will probably have a diesel engine, full-time AWD and 18-inch wheels. Its shape has been chosen to reflect the X1's wide track and higher ride height, with squared-off wheel cut-outs, black body surrounds, silver roof rails and a small spoiler over the rear window.

Paris Motor Show goes green
By David Fitzsimons · 02 Oct 2008
In a swiftly changing motoring environment carmakers are searching for new ways to cut fuel use and emissions and improve efficiency.Among the hundreds of concepts and new and updated models on display at the Paris motor show over the next 15 days are some definite standouts. Renault has combined gull-wing doors, comfort, refinement and a slippery design with a hybrid diesel engine and plonked it all on massive 23-inch wheels in its range-topping Ondelios concept car (cover picture). It's 4.8m long and has a hybrid 150kW version of the 2.0-litre dCi engine. There are also two 20kW electric motors at the front and rear to provide extra boost recovered during braking.Mercedes is unveiling one of the world's fastest cabriolets. The SLR McLaren Roadster 722S has 478kW of power and accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of 335km/h.Just 150 of the two-seater supercars will be built. It complements Mercedes' other show star the ConceptFascination, a wild two-door sportswagon. It's a modern version of the old British “shooting-brake” where a wagon tail has been planted on a sporty saloon.Citroen's crossover concept, Hypnos, hasa 150kW engine that boasts miserly fuel efficiency figures of 4.5-litres per 100km.However, it what's inside that is different. An extremely colourful rainbow light show highlights its sleek styling.Honda is using the Paris show to highlight its green commitment. Star of its stand is the new Insight Concept, a dedicated petrol-electric hybrid car in the vein of Toyota's Prius. It is expected to go into production within the next few years. From the US, GM will debut a close to production version of its revolutionary Volt electric car. Chevrolet is showing its new crucial small car the Cruze, plus its first seven-seat multi-purpose family car, the Orlando show car.A form of SUV-family van and wagon crossover, it has a 2.0-litre diesel engine.Alfa Romeo is unveiling its little MiTo compact which is due to come to Australian the middle of next year.Fiat is showing the MiTo's likely competitor in the super-mini category, the 120kW 500 Abarth EsseEsse (SS) plus its PUR-O2 eco-range of cleaner, greener 500s. New technology includes the ability for the engine to turn itself off while idling and back on to continue driving.Mini will show its all-wheel-drive Crossover Concept, while BMW will premiere its X1 wagon. The Mini is intended for adventurous twenty-somethings, while the Concept X1 will go into production as a safe, practical family car.Chasing a similar small, sporty car market is Audi with its new A1. The near-production version will be a feature of its stand.Saab is exhibiting its 9-X Air concept car, while Volvo is debuting its production-ready ultra-safe XC60 crossover which is headed for Australia.Porsche has several new models in the911 range plus the go-anywhere Cayenne S Transsyberia super-4WD.Mazda's all-new Kiyora urban compact four-cylinder concept car will sit alongside the world debut of production cars, the new generation MX-5, the Mazda6 with a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine and the Mazda2 1.6-litre diesel.Lamborghini has joined the rush to GT supercars with its four-door Estoque concept.Like Porsche's Panamera, Maserati's Quattroporte and Aston Martin's upcoming four-seater, the Estoque, brings a new versatility to one of the world's most uncompromising sports marques.Lamborghini stresses that although there are no production plans for the AWD Estoque it has been developed as fully production capable.Toyota has three world premiere vehicles ranging from its little four-seater city car, the iQ, to the all-new Avensis sedan and wagon and the 1.4-litre diesel-engined Urban Cruiser All Wheel Drive.Ford is debuting the all-new Ka city car with a choice of 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litrediesel engines, the hot Focus RS and the new economic Fiesta.Volkswagen will show off its latest Golf GTi. The hot hatch for 2009 is cleaner, smoother and much more refined than earlier cars.It will still come with a 155kW turbo petrol engine and the promise of a 7.2-second sprint to 100km/h, but is missing the wild body bits of earlier GTi road runners.Nissan's debuting Nuvu concept is just three-metres long. It only has two normal seats plus a third that folds down for luggage and groceries. The city car has solar panels on the glass roof.Ferrari will debut its chic two-seater V8 California sports car. From Korea will come Hyundai's i20 small car and a 2.4-litre engined hybrid SUV.Kia is showing its Soul range of urban crossover concepts that come with either petrol or diesel engines. There's also a hybrid version. Additional reporting by Kevin Hepworth and Paul Gover.

Coupe could be a real coup for BMW
By CarsGuide team · 11 Sep 2008
Just in time to be the latest status symbol for summer. The X6 is an unlikely marriage between an X5 SUV (on which it's based) and a 6 Series coupe, producing a supersized offspring. This is niche marketing at its best, a low-volume model targeting a specific but high-profile audience. BMW has even coined a new designer name: the Sports Activity Coupe.Calling it a coupe may be a bit of marketing tongue-in-cheek, but in Europe, where it has only been on sale for a couple of months, it's been getting plenty of nods of approval and attracting plenty of head turning. The X6 xDrive 50i, priced at $145,000, joins the lesser-powered bi-turbo six-cylinder petrol ($114,705) and diesel ($120,530) which gives BMW a three-model line-up to steal sales from rivals, Porsche and Range Rover.BMW is still counting the numbers but says it has already found homes for about 105 of the six-cylinder X6s. It has tipped total X6 sales for the year will exceed 300 with the arrival of the V8 in three months time. Those sales are predicted to rise to between 400 and 500 wagons next year. And who is buying it? Obviously those with plenty of testosterone in reserve.BMW spokesman Toni Andreevski says the X6 will appeal to Range Rover or Porsche buyers or those seeking a more macho wagon than conventional SUVs such as the X5 which attracts women drivers.“We see it appealing to people like 911 owners who want a second car, one which seats more than two and has the luggage space so they can take their friends down to their yacht, or away for a skiing weekend,” Andreevski says. The X6 is anything but conventional; purists would argue it is not a coupe because it has four doors, the plump styling with its dramatically sloping rear roof line is, to be polite, challenging. It only seats four, rear head room is passable, the view through the letterbox rear window is almost non-existent and the V8 is less than green friendly. But while history is littered with one-hit wonders it also shows some of the world's greatest cars were less than conventional, so BMW may have the last laugh after all. There's no question the X6 packs an awesome punch: the direct injection, twin turbo (one for each cylinder bank) 4.4-litre V8 is a first from BMW. Neatly tucked away under the bonnet, the V8 provides 300kW and 600Nm of torque to play with through a six-speed sequential auto transmission.Peak torque is on tap from 1750 to 4500rpm, providing wonderful flexibility and outstanding sports car-like performance. The same engine, slightly detuned, will also be used in the next Seven Series due next year.BMW points to its “frugal” fuel consumption (a relative description for such a powerful all-wheel drive vehicle that weighs in at over two tonnes) of 13.8 litres per 100km.On fuel consumption and gas emissions the X6 however betters the naturally aspirated Porsche Cayenne (15.1 litres per 100km; 361g/km) and the Range Rover supercharged Sport (15.9 litres per 100km; 374g/km).It's also more powerful, in both peak kilowatts and torque, than its rivals. While X6, governed to 250km/h, can't quite match the maximum speed of the Cayenne, it is quicker in acceleration, taking a claimed 5.4 seconds to hit 100km/h.As for the drive? The X6 is both remarkable and a little annoying. You would expect a cumbersome looking all-wheel wagon to be a pig when pushed. Far from it. There's sports car handling in its road manners. That is helped of course by its power and torque output, but that's all well managed on the road thanks to some very clever electronics that BMW has used. While xDrive distributes drive between front and rear axles, the really smart bit is the inclusion of what BMW calls Dynamic Performance Control, which varies the torque between the rear wheels — designed to deliver more torque to the outside wheel which needs it to drive it out of a corner. Add massive 385mm brakes and 20-inch wheels shod with wide rubber, adaptive steering, a self-levelling pneumatic suspension and the X6 has an ability to rocket out of corners.Creature comforts for Australian models will include a revised version of BMW's controversial iDrive, a choice of four trim finishes, power adjustable front seats leather upholstery, heads-up display, four-zone automatic air conditioning and a 16-speaker hi-fi audio system. SNAPSHOTBMW X6xDrive 50iPrice: from $145,000Engine: 4.4L/V8 twin turbo; 300kW/600NmTransmission: 6-speed sequential autoPerformance: 0-100km/h 5.4 sec.

The next big think
By Neil Dowling · 20 Jun 2008
Within three years, production-line workers will build cars with names they can't pronounce. It's nothing new but when the Russians start pumping out Mitsubishis and Peugeots and Citroens, it is another step in the process that sees car makers move out of their backyard and onto foreign soil. The reasons are cheap.Picking a developing country with available employment, low yet aspiring standards of living and government incentives such as free land and tax breaks is the financial equivalent of a Stephanie Rice wall poster. And there's no reason to feel shy about deserting the homeland in search of reduced manufacturing costs even if Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is scathing of the practice — though the Cayenne body is made in Slovakia — and says so in his new (only) book “Don't Follow The Crowd”.Look around. You probably know it because you're on the carsguide.com.au site, but most car owners haven't a clue where their metallic ego in the driveway was born. The Honda Accord and Jazz are from Thailand, the Volkswagen Caddy in Poland, the Suzuki APU (named after the 24-hour shop owner in The Simpsons?) van in Indonesia, the Chrysler Grand Cherokee in Austria — on the same line as the BMW X3, no less — the Volvo XC70 in Belgium and the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus hatch and BMW 3-Series four-cylinder models in South Africa. As these countries grow richer on their ability to make cars cheaper for the world, so their prices — of labour and taxes and energy — will rise. Are there any countries left that have even lower costs that car makers can exploit? While you sift through the Atlas (get a current one, some countries and borders have changed in the past decade) let me tell you about one that has it all.And only recently is word out that this could be the next big think in car manufacture.Unlike Russia or Thailand or Slovakia, this country has English as its predominant language. It has an able workforce and rising unemployment. Its needs are many because the country has high consumer goods consumption.Yet the workforce — perhaps through desperation — can be turned to receive a modest wage. There are tax breaks and land going on offer throughout the country, most close to the ocean or rivers for easy transportation of raw materials and finished product. The icing on the cake is that it has existing infrastructure to support car assembly. The country is the USA.Now the focus turns from outward looking to the manufacturing equivalent of navel gazing. Now European countries have seen a weakened USA become ripe for domestic manufacture. The US dollar is so weak that it makes importing European cars too expensive.Far better to look at camping on US soil, in the way a cuckoo camps in another nest to exploit its personal needs. While General Motors seeks manufacturing in China, Volkswagen is looking at the USA.Volkswagen is not alone, European suppliers are also sniffing out what the USA can offer. The tide has unexpectedly changed and perhaps the only hindrance will be a revival in the US economy.Preoccupied with the 'war with no end' in the Middle East, the US is poised to become the world's next big car factory.Who would have thought that possible?

BMW leads turbo charge
By Stephen Ottley · 20 May 2008
Seven of the 11 winners in Germany last week were turbo-charged units, which reflects the major part the technology is now playing in efforts to improve fuel economy and curb emissions.Six companies collected prizes, but one brand had more reason than most to celebrate.BMW dominated the competition, claiming half of the awards including the top honour, International Engine of the Year. That accolade went to its 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder unit available in the 135i, 335i and X6.It is the second year in a row the engine has won the top gong. The German firm also claimed the New Engine of 2008 title with its 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, available in the 123d.Other winners for the company were the 4.0-litre V8 found in the new M3 and the 5.0-litre V10 in the M5 and M6.BMW's joint venture with French company PSA also paid off. The 1.6-litre turbo-charged four-cylinder used in the Mini and Peugeot 308 won its class.“BMW rightly views these awards as the highest industry recognition of its outstanding achievements in engine technology and manufacturing,” BMW director of power-train Peter Langen says.“It is an honour for our 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine to have earned the highest accolade for the second year running. And we are truly delighted that so many of our other engines have been judged class leaders.”The other multiple winners were Toyota and Volkswagen/Audi.Toyota's hybrid synergy drive, which powers the Prius, won the inaugural Green Engine of the Year prize. It's not the first time the engine has been honoured, though. It has previously won 10 gongs in the annual awards.Toyota's other winner — the 1.0-litre unit that powers the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 — came in the under 1.0-litre category.Like BMW, Volkswagen/Audi was honoured for its forced induction engines. The 1.4-litre TSI engine, which uses super-charging and turbo-charging, won its category. It's other winner was the 2.0-litre turbo motor in the Audi A3, VW Golf GTi and Skoda Octavia. That engine drew particular praise for not only its performance and economy but its flexibility. The 2.0-litre unit comes in a variety of tunes — 125kW, 147kW, 195kW and 200kW — to suit different vehicles, including the new Audi TTS.“The benchmark for efficiency and performance in its category,” was one comment from the judges. “A great example of an engine that's so flexible it can deliver the right solutions for a variety of vehicles.”Porsche won the performance engine award with its 3.6-litre turbo from the 911 turbo and 911 GT2.Subaru was the only other winner with its 2.5-litre turbo.British specialist magazine Engine Technology International is responsible for the awards, which are voted on by 65 motoring journalists from 32 countries, including Australia. The ceremony was held as part of the 2008 Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. The awards are held in high regard by the automotive industry because the judges consider the full range of engine criteria: performance, fuel consumption, driving behaviour, driving comfort and the use of technology. The highest industry recognition of its outstanding achievementsThe Winners of the International Engine of the Year 2008 BMW 3.0-litre twin-turboBest new engineBMW 2.0-litre diesel twin-turboGreen engine of the yearToyota 1.5-litre hybrid synergy driveBest performance-enginePorsche 3.6-litre turboBest sub 1.0-litreToyota 1.0-litreBest 1.0-litre to 1.4-litreVolkswagen 1.4-litre TSI twinchargerBest 1.4-litre to 1.8-litreBMW-PSA 1.6-litre turboBest 1.8-litre to 2.0-litreVolkswagen/Audi 2-litre turboBest 2.0-litre to 2.5-litreSubaru 2.5-litre turboBest 2.5-litre to 3.0-litreBMW 3.0-litre twin-turboBest 3.0-litre to 4.0-litreBMW 4.0-litre V8Best above 4.0-litreBMW 5.0-litre V10

BMW acts to narrow options
By Paul Gover · 14 May 2008
The explosive growth of the BMW model range is about to be defused in Australia, with the line-up being trimmed to cut competition and duplication, making it easier for customers in showrooms. The plan is to have only three choices of any individual model, with two petrol engines and one diesel. The current list includes 36 individual models in the 3 Series sedan line-up ... without counting the coupe, convertible or station wagon.“We get a lot of questions about whetherwe have too many models,” BMW Australia managing director Guenther Seemann says.“I think we do have too many.”He believes BMW must cut the choices to streamline business, though he says there will still be all-new models in future — with the X6 four-wheel-drive and M3 sedan up next — asthe German company looks for customers. The work has begun, though there are a dozen individual BMW lines, from the baby 1 Series to the four-wheel-drive X5 and flagship 7 Series, with 50 official engine choices. BMW has 189 individual models on the list.“We've already begun tidying up. The 116i hatch has been removed from the range, there are the manuals in the 3 Series and one of the X3 manuals,” Seemann says.“In the 5 Series range, one of the V8s will go.I believe for each and every model line-up in the future, as we add models, we need two petrol and one diesel variant in each case. No more. We have so many different model lines, it is not practical or possible to display them all in a showroom.”He says it will take time to get things sorted, partly because there are so many models.“It will happen in the next two years. Globally, there are five petrol and five diesel engine choices. And that is just in the 3 Series range,” Seemann says. But there is definitely space for some additions, like the four-door M3 sedan.“We will bring the four-door version, but I do not know at what price. We have to price it lower than the M3 two-door.”

BMW has an answer for fuel
By Paul Gover · 12 May 2008
That is at least partly true, but those inside the companies do have hearts — and many share our worries. Some have even bigger concerns. BMW, for example. It would be easy to dismiss the German carmaker as a badge brand that is all about flash cars.Look at its headliners — the M3, the new 135i coupe and the forthcoming X6 — and you wonder where the company is going. And why.But talk to its Australian chief, Guenther Seemann, and you see another side. The transplanted German, who arrived in Australia after time in South Africa, China and Dubai, is a deep thinker worried about the future. And not just the future of his sales and profits.“What do we do when petrol is $4 or $5 a litre? Or even when it is $2 a litre?” he asks.“People will react. They will decide it does not make sense to be burning this oil, that it must be used for other things that are more important, like making medicine.”He knows we are approaching a tipping point in the car industry and, while batting the BMW position on future technology, asks how others will get through.“People will not give up their mobility,” he says. “Humans are a mobile race. We will not want to lose our personal transportation. We believe hydrogen is the solution. We've been working on this for more than 30 years.”Seemann is not just talking about electric fuel-cell cars, which use hydrogen to generate on-board voltage, but internal-combustion engines that can use hydrogen as a replacement for petrol. BMW has taken a high-profile approach to its first luxury hydrogen concept car, the Hydrogen7, by offering it to film stars and celebrities for testing.Keys to the cars have been handed to Prince Albert of Monaco, actors Cameron Diaz and Will Ferrell, television presenter Jay Leno and opera star Placido Domingo. However, Seemann knows there is no way of creating that hydrogen or delivering it to the equivalent of a 21st-century petrol station.“The alarm clock went off some years ago, but many people are still sleeping,” he says.“No government, anywhere in the world, is thinking ahead far enough."“They only think about the next four years, to the next election. Australia is the best country for making hydrogen. We have so much sunlight and water. And yet ...”He believes green pressure will grow quickly in coming years, but so will the demand for cars that do more with a litre of fuel — whatever that fuel might be.“Car companies can react very quickly to pressure. But the only real pressure comes from customers,” Seemann says.BMW will build its first hybrid using the new X6, but has yet to commit to any sort of fuel-cell car for production.

BMW line-up sliced

I believe for each and every model line-up in the future, as we add models, we need two petrol and one diesel variant in each case. No more. We have so many different model lines, it is not practical or possible to display them all in a showroom. He says it will take time to get things sorted, partly because there are so many models.“It will happen in the next two years. Globally, there are five petrol and five diesel engine choices. And that is just in the 3 Series range,” he says. But there is definitely space for some additions, like the four-door M3 sedan.“We are starting the business case. It looks good, I must say,” he says.“We will bring the four-door version, but I do not know at what price. We always follow the normal BMW pattern, where a two-door is more expensive than a four-door. We have to price it lower than the M3 two-door.”
