Turbocharged BMW coming

BMW in the US yesterday unveiled its new turbocharged 2-litre petrol engine that is claimed to have the performance of a six with the economy of a ... well, four.Proposed initially for the X1 - and to be badged xDrive28i - in Europe later this year, the turbo is also bound for the entry-level Z4 and selected 1-Series and 3-Series vehicles.BMW Australia spokesman Piers Scott says it's coming, but it is still being determined when it arrives and in what model."It may not be the X1 that's first in Australia with this engine," he says. "Production scheduling could see the four-cylinder Z4 getting here first."The twin-scroll turbo four pumps 180kW and 353Nm of torque - more torque than the company's 3-litre atmo six that has 190kW/310Nm.It is the first time that BMW has launched a production turbo-four since the 2002 of 1974.The engine delivers its power at 5000rpm, 1500rpm lower than the peak power of the six, and the 353Nm of torque hits at 1250rpm - again, 1500rpm earlier than the six.BMW says the four-cylinder engine has an aluminum crankcase so is lighter and smaller than the 3-litre six. Its compact size will allow it to be placed at the back of the engine bay to improve chassis balance. The result of increased performance also comes with lower fuel consumption and emissions, though BMW is yet to release details.
Luxury brands build networks

The spread of the dealer network aims to keep up with demand caused by a booming population and Australia's strong economy. Within two years, BMW will see $40 million spent on new or refurbished outlets as it shoots for 50 national dealerships. These include a second dealership in Perth ($15 million), expanded Doncaster (Victoria) premises ($10 million), a North Shore Sydney franchise ($8 million) and a new dealer at Tweed Heads. The Perth dealership, to be built this year by the existing franchisee, is in the city's expanding northern suburbs.BMW Australia managing director Stavros Yallouridis says the expansion reflects the mechandising concept that takes the product closer to the buyer. "We are, to a degree, a product for the impulsive buyer," he says."We have to go to the buyer and that redefines the distribution of our products. In many cases, as we expand our products with smaller cars, we have to be in city areas that demand small cars in order to sell to our target market."Yallouridis says the car market was aiming for record highs and, in BMW's case, highlighted by the 1-Series, X1, 5-Series and 7-Series."The X3 comes in next year and there's the 1-Series hatch and coupe, so sales will expand further," he says. The Audi Centre in Perth is more than doubling its floor area, taking over a neighbouring property in the high-end car retail suburb of Osborne Park. The suburb also hosts Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lexus, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.The additional building will accommodate the new 26-car showroom - effectively 2.5 times bigger than present - to display one of each of Audi's models. Dealer principal David Collins says the investment of about $15 million was necessary."The customers demand it and we desperately need the space because of the growth in Audi sales," he says. "In 2004 we had 120 new car sales. Now we have 1050."Audi's sales are higher than BMW's when you take out the SUVs. "I've ordered 250 units of the A1 for 2011 because of demand." Collins says the Q5 was "the most successful car I've ever been involved with".He says it reflects the growing trend of buyers seeking to downsize their cars yet retain quality and luxury. BMW has recorded a 10.4 per cent national sales growth year-to-date and, with global sales this calendar year of 775,000, has surpassed Mercedes-Benz (735,000) and Audi (726,000).It has since January sold 1156 of its baby X1 SUV - now its third most popular single-body seller after the 3-Series (3326) and X5 (1955) - for 2 per cent of Australia's passenger-car market.Audi has 1.7 per cent of the car market, primed by sales year-to-date of 1458 A3s and 2521 A4s, and Mercedes-Benz has 2.6 per cent thanks primarily to its E-Class stranglehold of the $70,000-plus large luxury car sector and the robust 4242 C-Class sales.
New BMW X3 more powerful

Although the car has some links with the first-generation car, the newcomer borrows visual cues from the latest X models, gains more useable interior space and enhanced performance with a new range of engines.
BMW Australia spokesman, Piers Scott, says the newcomer is expected to arrive into local showrooms early next year. Initially two engines will be available at launch in Europe, a 135kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and 225kW 3.0-litre petrol six, both adopting BMW's "efficient dynamics'' principles.
However, Scott believes that once the car arrives here, more engine variants will be available. "But are really not in a position to confirm which variants they will be,'' he says.
However, the company does plan other turbo-diesel and petrol engines and a hybrid version, which could also make it to Australia if right-hand drive hybrids are available.
Apart from new engines, some higher performance models will get a new eight-speed automatic. Like BMW's sedan range, the new off-roader will get auto stop/start for the first time in conjunction with the six-cylinder engine as well as the eight-speed auto.
BMW's xDrive four-wheel drive technology is standard across the range with a "performance control'' function available. The car gets newly conceived suspension technology, electric power steering and for the first time in an X model, variable sports steering, which will be optional in some markets.
It will also be the first X model with optional damper control and dynamic drive control. The all-wheel drive splits torque 40:60 front-to-rear thanks to an electronically controlled multi-disc diff and a host of other techno features.
The MacPherson front struts have been redeveloped along with the multi-link rear suspension, while an optional electronic damping control adapts to the road and driver inputs.
Normal, Sport and Sport-Plus modes are mounted next to the gear selector. The Sport controls sharpen throttle response, transmission shifts, steering assist, DSC settings and suspension firmness.
The "performance control'' feature shuffles 80 per cent of the torque to the rear under steady acceleration. Inside the cabin gets new materials and added versatility with a 40/20/40-split rear seat.
With the seats folded, the maximum luggage capacity is 1600 litres. A range of BMW ConnectedDrive options will be available, including head-up display, internet access, reversing camera with top view.

BMW X3 hybrid tipped to come

"Obviously, if a hybrid was available in right-hand drive we would look at it," BMW Australia spokesman, Piers Scott says.
The company currently builds 'active hybrid' versions of the X6 and 7 Series but they are only available in left-hand drive. Eventually an X3 hybrid is tipped to join the petrol and turbo-diesel models in some markets. Other details are emerging about BMW's newest X-factor car.
The company is drip-feeding photos and some specifications of the new X3 ahead of its launch at the Paris Motor Show in September. Although wearing psychedelic black and white camouflage, the distinctive styling of the current car has mellowed into a smoother shape that is slightly bigger than the current car.
The second-generation X3 is slightly bigger in every respect than the current car, which translates into more interior and luggage room. BMW has listened to customers too and lifted the quality of interior materials around the cabin. Scott says the lifestyle off-roader is expected to hit local BMW showrooms around next February. "Certainly in the first quarter of next year," he says.
Although specifications are yet to be confirmed for Australia, it is likely to be available initially with a range of turbo-diesel and high-powered petrol six cylinder engines. Unlike the X1, the X3 will have standard four-wheel drive mated to a new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.
All X3s get BMW's Xdrive all-wheel drive system, which directs torque variably to the front wheels through an electronically controlled multiplate clutch. BMW also plans to shift production from the Magna-Steyr plant in Graz, Austria, to its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, which also builds the X5 as well as X6 petrol and hybrid models.
China's next wave of car

The three companies with Australia in their sights - Great Wall, Chery and Geely - are all expected to unveil new value-driven compacts and SUVs at the country's biggest annual motoring event. Great Wall is the only brand with vehicles already in local showrooms, a dual-cab ute and SUV, but Chery and Geely will both hit the road down under before the end of 2010.BYD, a technology leader for China, is also planning to reveal its first plug-in electric cars in Beijing although it currently has no plans to sell overseas. All 47 of China's manufacturers are expected to have something new at the show, with a move away from the copycat designs of the past - everything from the Rolls-Royce Phantom to the BMW X5 was either parodied or duplicated - to unique Chinese designs."They will all show their new export cars," says Ric Hull, the Ateco Automotive executive responsible for the Great Wall and Chery brands. Hull says the Chinese car industry is advancing so rapidly it is hard to keep tabs on the new-model action."I think everything has to be seen in the context of the market. The Chinese made and sold about 13.6 million vehicles last year, and the US was 10.4 million," he says. "They have not only eclipsed the US, they have gone way beyond them. In good years the US is 17 million, but the Chinese are there already."In the first quarter of this year, they have sold 4.6 million vehicles. So you're now talking 18 or 20 million a year. It's just gone bezerk. "The thing that fascinates me most is how anyone can lift production to those levels. I don't believe the Japanese could do it, or even the Koreans."Hull says Ateco is already on track with additions to the Great Wall range including a single-cab ute, with Chery to hit first with a compact SUV. "We'll launch Chery in August. It has just been an agonizing process to get the compliance issues in place, but it will be fine."I'm hoping to launch a RAV4-kind of vehicle at a really good price. "Great Wall are talking about a 1.5-litre car that we'll introduce before the end of the year. They are getting there and getting there awfully, awfully quickly."Hull says he is expecting rapid improvement in Chinese vehicles, with quality and safety as top priorities. Great Wall is just about to face its second ANCAP crash-test barrier in Australia and, following the miserable two-star result for the ute, Hull is hoping for a four-star rating for the brand's SUV."We took a hammering from NCAP on the utes but Great Wall reacted and they have made a lot of changes," Hull says. Car sales in China are so important that all the world's major makers will be displaying in Beijing.Even though many skipped last year's Tokyo Motor Show, previously the world's equal number one with Frankfurt every two years, no-one can afford to miss the biggest motoring event in China. There were more than a dozen world previews at the last Beijing show and a lot of the action is at the upmarket end of the business in 2010.Ferrari is unveiling its new go-faster flagship, the 599 GTO, and Mercedes-Benz will reveal an update of the $1.5 million Maybach ultra- luxury limousine.

The next version – caught on camera by Carparazzi in the US – will look little different from the current model, but gains a little more size, and a bolder grille set off by wraparound headlight clusters. Now facing fresh challenges from the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, the BMW X3 has reportedly also been given an upgraded cabin treatment, and it’s rumoured that it will also have the twin-turbo petrol engine from the 335i and the 2-litre turbodiesel, while there is also talk of a hybrid version.BMW spokesman Tim James says it’s likely to be here by the end of next year, but there is no confirmation yet of the new engines. “As far as we know, the timing is for it to arrive in 2011,” James says.“It may not be likely we’ll get the 335i engine here, where there’s a strong appetite for diesels, but it’s too early to say yet … it will be considered. “The volume seller for us is the turbodiesel xDrive 20d.”James says BMW is confident the X3 will continue its success, which saw sales rise after the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 arrived and stirred up fresh interest in the market. “The last two years of the X3’s lifecycle have been its most successful so far – we did 140-150 month last year and we’d expect that to continue or improve,” he says.
My BMW Alpina B10 replica

Almost a quarter of a century later he managed to buy one; an Alpina B10 replica. (Alpina is a German tuning, customising and motorsport company specialising in BMWs.) Kelly's car started life as a 1986 BMW M635 CSi. It was bought for $55,000 in 1993 by Martin Dibb of Melbourne who then spent $82,000 completely rebuilding it to Alpina B10 specifications. The first thing to go was the auto box which was replaced with a Getrag five-speed manual. It also received a shorter drive shaft, engine remapping, Alpina-spec suspension, Bilstein dampers, stainless steel exhaust system, engine blueprint and balance, Alpina forged pistons, Alpina brake callipers, ventilated discs, Alpina wheels, a Stowes of Sydney paint job and exterior/interior fit-out with Alpina stickers, badges and decals, including a replica certification plate on the glovebox. The new owner fell in love when he saw it. "My wife Gail and I love everything German," Kelly says. The first car the Californian bought was an American 1955 Fordomatic V8 he paid $300 for when he was 16. "I outgrew it and went to uni and sold it," he says.He then owned a Nissan 269Z, followed by an MG TD before he started his German love affair with a Porsche 924 which he took to Germany where he worked for a while. "A bit silly to buy it in the States and then take it to Germany," he says "That's when Gail started falling in love with BMWs. She had a 735i."The couple then moved to Australia where they owned a Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, then a 2004 BMW X5 4.4-litre V8, a 1981 Porsche 928 auto and a 1984 928 GTS. They still own the X5 and Porsches and belong to both the BMW and Porsche owner clubs. She says "German cars are reliable, comfortable and they feel safe." He says, "I like the styling and power." She says, "He used to rubbish me because I loved BMWs."Then he stumbled on the BMW Alpina replica and the friendly family feud over marques ended. He bought it for $55,000 in December and plans to show it at various concourse events. "I was looking for the perfect show car and this is it," he says."I didn't mind it being a replica. "It was converted with Alpina's blessing, but they wouldn't give it a genuine coach badge."So how does it drive? "Absolutely great," he says. "It's got herb," she says. "But it's his baby. I don't drive it." They haven't been driving it much at all lately as they don't take it out in the rain."The previous owner never drove it in the rain, either," Barry says. "I spend a lot of time cleaning it, nourishing the leather, conditioning the trim." He keeps his baby in his garage under a special tailored cover he had made in the US for $300. "It fits like a glove," he says. "And I always keep a chamois in our cars, just in case it rains."

The X1 lands in Australia next year and will be fresh and new, unlike the larger X3 which has at least two more years before its next major overhaul. Carparazzi caught the new X3 at the Nurburgring during recent tests and, despite a complete overhaul, the car looks much like the current model. The new X3 will have almost the same dimensions, although its styling will be shaped — Carparazzi says — to reflect some of BMW's work on the CS concept. That means a more prominent grille plus new wraparound headlights.BMW is concentrating on lifting cabin quality in the X3 to combat the gains made by the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 which went on sale this year, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLK which is still being promised for Australia — sometime. The other change for the X3 is that production will be moved to the USA, where it will be built alongside the X5 and X6 models at BMW's factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina.Mechanically, the biggest news is expected to be a twin-turbo engine taken from the 335i model, as well as a 2-litre turbodiesel and — like the larger X-cars — a hybrid model.

Since cars all deliver on the same basic promise of personal mobility, and many vehicles do it with incredible value and panache, good design can often make the difference between buying and losing.Ian Callum knows it and, after more than four decades of top-class design work on everything from HSV Holdens to Volvos, Aston Martins and now Jaguars, he is the right man to be talking. "This is a time of car design. It's not just styling any more. You really have to understand design, and the elements that make up a good design," Callum says. "We're also seeing a lot of change in the automotive world. The make-up of cars is changing. Designers are going to have an incredible influence."Callum has revolutionised Jaguar design over the past 10 years and just visited Australia to showcase his all-new XJ flagship, which steps right away from anything which has previously worn the brand's leaper mascot. "I didn't want to be a slave to heritage," he says simply.Callum believes good design is simple but incredibly difficult, elegant and timeless, but also challenging and filled with tiny little details. He is rare among designers because he backs his promises with commitment and talent, and is also happy to give an opinion. So, then, how does he judge the work from some of his rivals? Surprisingly, Callum is happy to go on the record with a simple tick-or-cross verdict on the latest designs in showrooms. Here are his ratings: Aston Martin Rapide - tickAudi A5 - tickBMW GT - two crossesBMW X6 - crossFerrari F458 Italia - tickHSV EII Commodore - tickLexus LFA - tickMercedes E-Class - crossMercedes SLS Gullwing - crossNissan GT-R - crossPorsche Panamera - crossRolls-Royce Ghost - tickToyota Prius - tickVolkswagen Golf - tick
