It's impossible to say that it will occur at increasing frequency, but the vehicle is now getting towards the end of its useful life when things are more likely to fail. I would consult a mechanic experienced in four-wheel drives and have them diagnose the problem for you.
An air lock could have caused the problem. I doubt very much if your engine would have suffered any damage as the result of the short time it was low on coolant.
It does sound like it could be a problem with the differential. At this stage you should continue to seek a solution with the dealer and Mitsubishi. We will contact Mitsubishi on your behalf and see if we can enlist higher up help.
It's hard to believe that Mitsubishi doesn't have any starter motors in stock to replace one that has failed. Even if they didn't have one here in Australia, with the modern jets now in service it should only take a matter of a day or two to get one from overseas. We asked Mitsubishi for assistance in resolving your problem and they have told us that the parts you require will be available this week and will fitted when they arrive.
We have had a number of reports from other Magna owners saying they have also had starting problems with their cars and each one has been fixed by replacing the antenna in the ignition switch. That would seem to be a good place to start to fix Steve Conde's problem.
We passed the above response from Mitsubishi on to Jodie and Nick. Unfortunately they don't feel that it has been addressed and they believe the issue remains unresolved. We have again contacted Mitsubishi on their behalf to attempt to clarify the company's offer to replace the differential as stated in John Taylor's response to us.
I would agree with the dealer's diagnosis of carbon build-up and cleaning it will probably fix it.
We contacted Mitsubishi on Hazel's behalf and can report that a replacement starter motor has now been provided and fitted to her car.
It would seem likely that it is an electrical problem in the steering column. Take it to an auto electrician and have them check it for you. You've put up with the problem for nine years, so I don't think you can ask Mitsubishi to come to the party now.
