Hyundai Elantra 2012: Should Hyundai pay for a faulty engine in full?

The Elantra’s 1.8-litre engine has reputation for piston slap and ticking noise, hence the offer to cost of the parts. Carmakers will often make an offer like this, they pay for the parts, and you pay for the labour. They usually argue that you have to bear some of the cost because you’ve had the use of the car for a period of time. If you want to pursue it try to convince Hyundai to come around to your way of thinking by direct negotiation, or enlist a government body like the ACCC to help you.

The Elantra is a reliable car and, barring unforseen events, there is no reason it won’t give you good service for the five years you plan to own it. If you have any doubts the warranty of five years with unlimited kilometres should give you confidence in the car.

Hyundai's are generally standing up well to the Australian conditions, and are getting better with each new generation that comes to the market. The clutch went at over 100,000 km, so you have to think that's in the range of being acceptable. The split dash is a little different and I would be trying to get Hyundai to at least contribute to the cost of repairs.

You're right, what the dealer told you is ridiculous. Your description of a car that struggles to reverse up a slight incline suggests a mismatch of engine and gearing, the engine it seems doesn't have enough torque to handle the gearing of the Elantra, and the clutch then becomes the weakest link and the only thing it can do in the circumstances is slip. A slipping clutch is one that wears out quickly.
