The Foton Tunland V9 was first introduced in 2011 as Foton’s entry into the global one-tonne ute market. Built in China, it was aimed at markets like Australia where demand for affordable work-focused utes was growing. Early models used Cummins diesel engines and BorgWarner components, giving the Tunland V9 some credibility against established Japanese and European rivals.
Through the mid-2010s the Foton Tunland V9 was updated with improved safety features, interior revisions and new engine options. Some overseas markets also knew it simply as the Foton Tunland, without the V9 badge. While it never reached the sales volumes of Toyota HiLux or Ford Ranger, it held a place as a lower-cost alternative for buyers wanting a diesel dual-cab.
Today the Foton Tunland V9 remains available in selected markets as part of Foton’s wider light commercial range. It now competes with a wave of newer Chinese-built utes like the GWM Ute and LDV T60. Its role has shifted from being a new entrant to a value-focused option in a crowded segment.
