World's fastest lawnmower

Don Wales, nephew of world speed record holder Donald Campbell, hopes to drive his specially adapted Countax ride-on mower to more than 160km/h next weekend (MAY 22-23) and set a new world record.

The previous record for a working mower was 130km/h set by Bob Cleveland at Bonneville Salt Flats in the US in 2006.  The 48-year-old hopes to continue the Campbell family tradition of world speed records by driving two timed runs over 1.6km.

However, to qualify for the Guinness world record, he must then be able to cut grass with the same machine.  After the record-breaking attempt, the mower will join the Beaulieu collection of land speed record machines, sitting right next to the 1925 Bluebird of Donald Campbell's father, Sir Malcolm.

Although the Project Runningblade team has not revealed the engine and running gear details of the mower, they claim it will cut the grass on a football pitch in less than three minutes
