Opened in 1959, Daytona was last repaved in 1978. Over 30 years of hard racing and crashes has taken its toll on the surface, with lumps, bumps and potholes making the track more challenging.
Work started July 2010, and involved removal of the existing surface and lying of over 50,000 tonnes of new asphalt. To accomplish this, engineers had to consider the issue of laying road on the 31 degree banked section of the track. Several bulldozers were required to support the paver and roller, while a crane fed constant stream of asphalt to the paver.
NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers were the first to try out the new surface at its first event on December 15.
