Not so cheap Jeep! Prices up by thousands on all 2022 Jeep Compass, Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator variants, but no features added as industry challenges take hold

The Wrangler has gone up by more than $6000 per variant.

Jeep has continued its climb into premium territory with a price increase across all of its existing model lines.

The sticker price has gone up by between $1000 and $7000 depending on the model and grade, with the rugged Wrangler off-roader copping the biggest hike.

The American SUV specialist last month released local details for its upcoming new-generation Grand Cherokee range, which has steeply increased in price over the model it replaces. Although Jeep has only revealed pricing for the new seven-seat version and there is no such variant in the outgoing range.

This month’s price jump for the Compass small SUV, Cherokee medium SUV, Wrangler off-roader and Gladiator pick-up have been blamed on difficulties in sourcing parts and general supply chain delays that are impacting most manufacturers.

This is on top of the price increases that Jeep rolled out for each of these models in the past year, including three seperate upward adjustments for the Cherokee and Wrangler.

Aside from a variant change in the Compass line-up, there are no other updates or spec additions to any of the model year 2022 Jeeps.

Pricing for the Compass has increased by $1000 per variant, and there has been a slight tweak to the line-up. The Launch Edition has been replaced by the Night Eagle which serves as the new entry point for the Kia Seltos and Mazda CX-30 rival.

The Compass now kicks off at $39,950 before on-road costs for the Night Eagle, which is $2000 more than the now discontinued Launch Edition. However, the Night Eagle features variants specific styling flourishes and some additional spec.

Looking at the opening price for all other small SUV models form rival mainstream brands, the Compass is the most expensive. Others that come close include the Citroen C4 ($37,990), Peugeot 2008 ($36,740) and Volkswagen T-Roc (from $35,500).

If the Compass started from just $50 more ($40,000), it would move into the premium small SUV segment according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) vehicle categorisation, alongside the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and more.

Pricing for the ageing Cherokee has risen by $3300 for the entry Limited, which is now $54,050 and by $3500 apiece for the S-Limited and Trailhawk which both now cost $56,950.

Like the Compass, the mid-size Cherokee now has the highest starting price out of any vehicle in its category, which includes the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and more.

Wrangler prices have really exploded, with the two-door Rubicon up by $6600 to $72,550.

The four-door variants now start from $69,750 for the Night Eagle – a $6800 leap, before moving up to the $6900 pricier Overland at $74,850 and the Rubicon at $78,450, which is a $7000 increase.

Finally, the Gladiator Night Eagle dual-cab pick-up is now $70,550 (+$2100) and the Rubicon will set you back $79,250 (+$2300).
