Mazda’s new CX-60 SUV is now cheaper than ever.

The Japanese brand has expanded the range of its premium CX-60 SUV with three new rear-wheel-drive variants kicking off at $44,240 (before on-road costs).

For a short time Mazda is offering a drive-away offer of $47,990 for the entry-level Pure grade.

Previously the mid-size SUV was only available with a pricier all-wheel-drive set-up, which start at $50,240.

The new rear-wheel-drive CX-60s also ditch the 3.3-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol and diesel engines — and the plug-in hybrid set-up — from the all-wheel-drive versions and use a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine instead.

This engine makes 138kW and 250Nm — or 71kW and 200Nm less than the six-cylinder petrol.

Mazda claims it drinks 7.5L/100km, which is more than the 7.4L/100km used by the 3.3-litre unit in the all-wheel-drive version.

The smaller capacity engine will be familiar to Mazda fans, as it has been powering the CX-5 for years.

The CX-60 does stand apart from the CX-5 thanks to its rear-wheel drive — rather than front-wheel drive — set-up, which should translate to an amusing drive experience.

With a new CX-5 due next year, the more affordable CX-60s will likely be pitched at buyers of the long-time family favourite that don’t want to wait 12 months for a new car.
