There’s nothing like the heat of competition to sharpen a carmaker’s focus as the run towards the end of the calendar year approaches.

So, the three-pointed star introducing a new value- and design-focused variant to one of its most popular model lines at a price that lasts until, you guessed it… December 31, isn’t a huge surprise.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4Matic Avantgarde brings a solid specification list to the party as the premium mid-size SUV attempts to catch its BMW X3 nemesis, maintain an edge on the Audi Q5 and put a dent in the category-leading Lexus NX.

Available in “limited numbers”, as the name implies this new GLC 300 option swaps out the standard AMG Line styling package for an Avantgarde Line treatment.

Priced at $99,900 drive-away the new GLC 300 Avantgarde grade represents a roughly $11K saving over the 'standard' AMG Line model ($111,000 D/A, depending on state/territory).

Car-spotters should look out for a gloss chrome finish on a single louvre radiator shell, ‘simulated underguards’ front and rear, new ‘bi-colour’ 20-inch alloy rims and wheel arch liners that are black instead of body colour.

Inside, there’s black synthetic leather trim (‘Sienna Brown’/black and ‘Macchiato Beige’/black are no-cost options) the floor mats are velour and there are anthracite lime wood trim elements as well as high-gloss black finishes.

Additional standard features include a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry and start, heated electric ‘Comfort’ front seats with memory settings (rather than the AMG Line’s sports seats) and a head-up display.

Available (standard) metallic paint finishes are ‘Verde Silver’, ‘Graphite Grey’, ‘High-Tech Silver’, ‘Obsidian Black’ and ‘Spectral Blue’ or non-metallic ‘Polar White’.

His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation.
