Mercedes-Benz has cut the price on two popular models in an attempt to claw back sales against key rivals Audi, BMW and Lexus.

The Mercedes-Benz A-class range now starts $6000 cheaper, while the GLE is nearly $12,000 more affordable — both before on-road costs.

The A200 hatchback now starts at $56,900 before on-road costs down from $62,900, while the sedan version begins at $58,400 before on-road costs.

That brings the A-Class closer to the refreshed BMW 118 ($56,500 before on-road costs), though both remain considerably more expensive than the Audi A3, which starts at $50,600 before on-road costs.

However, there's a catch, with the A200's previous standard equipment, such as metallic paintwork and a panoramic sunroof, now incurring additional charges of $600 and $1500, respectively.

The A200 maintains standard features such as a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and equal size multimedia touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, electronically controlled and heated front seats, digital radio and brushed aluminium trim.

The front-drive A200 uses a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which provides peak outputs of 120kW/270Nm. It drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The GLE 300d 4Matic is now $134,900, down from its previous starting price of $146,900, both before on-road costs.

That puts the Merc it line-ball with the BMW X5 xDrive30d, though both models remain considerably more expensive than the Audi Q7, which starts at $117,284 before on-road costs.

As with the A200, the GLE 300d loses some standard features such as leather upholstery, replaced with synthetic leather. Customers can opt for genuine cow-hide for an additional $2900.

The wheels have also been downgraded from 21 to 20 inches, though they remain five-spoke AMG wheels. Upsizing to the old standard costs $2300, while upgrading to bigger 22-inch wheels will set you back $3900.

Interior aluminium trims have been removed and replaced with piano black, costing $1300 to restore.

The GLE 300d 4MATIC maintains standard features such as twin 12.3-inch screens for the digital driver’s display and multimedia touchscreen, which comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and digital radio.

There’s also ambient lighting, four-way electric lumbar support, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, open-pore wood and chrome trims and a multi-function steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.

It maintains the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which delivers 198kW/550Nm to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes has presumably cut prices to drive interest, with A-Class sales having dipped by 15.8 per cent to September, from 1929 last year to 1625 so far in 2024.

The GLE Wagon-class has seen an even bigger decline of 45.8 per cent, with sales retracting from 1984 to September last year to 1078.

On the whole, Mercedes-Benz Cars has seen its sales shrink by 19.1 per cent so far for 2024.
