Chinese car giant GAC will launch its 1000km Trumpchi S7 plug-in hybrid within weeks in its home country and we have the vital specs on this large SUV ahead of the brand’s launch in Australia in 2025.
The Trumpchi S7 PHEV debuted in November at the Guangzhou Auto Show but now we know more about it thanks to a law in China that requires manufacturers to provide the specifications of upcoming models which are then published on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s (MIIT) website.
Powering the Trumpchi S7 PHEV is a new plug-in hybrid system. Exact details remain a mystery, but the brand promises all-wheel drive and a 118kW four-cylinder engine at its heart.
Paired with an electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, GAC claims the Trumpchi S7 will have a combined petrol-electric driving range of over 1000km.
While its smooth lines and handsome looks are appealing there seems to be more than a hint of Range Rover emulation happening here.
At 4900mm long, 1950mm wide and 1780mm tall, the Trumpchi S7 PHEV is a large SUV, its petrol-electric power offering matched by the likes of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Kluger.
Ground clearance is 200mm and the vehicle at its heaviest has a curb weight of 2260kg.
The Trumpchi S7 PHEV is expected to launch in China early in 2025, and whether it comes to Australia is yet to be seen, but it's likely it will arrive after the GAC launched in Australia.
When GAC’s International General Manager Wei Haigang spoke to CarsGuide recently at the Mobility Live Show in Melbourne he said the brand would launch in Australia in quarter 2 2025.
The first model to arrive from GAC he said will be the Aion V electric SUV, with Aion being the company’s electric sub-brand although it could be badged GAC.
GAC joins a swathe of new Chinese brands trying their luck in Australia with many such as BYD and MG winning over many Aussie’s hearts with affordable and good looking electric vehicles such as the Shark 6 ute and MG4 hatch.
