Finally! 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee five seater hits showrooms with prices up sharply

Prices are up dramatically for the Grand Cherokee, enough that it now rivals European large SUVs.

The five-seat version of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is arriving in Australian showrooms months after the 'L' long-wheelbase version.

Entry-level pricing for the Grand Cherokee is up significantly from the last generation, though new standard equipment and tech is part of the deal, which could convince some buyers to fork out an extra $17,500 for the Night Eagle variant compared to the previous version of the same badge.

The Night Eagle, priced from $77,950 before on-road costs, shares the same engine as the rest of the range - a carry over 3.6-litre petrol Pentastar V6 making 210kW and 344Nm - with power transferred through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels.

The new Grand Cherokee does however have the ability to decouple the front wheels from the drivetrain if it senses driving conditions where rear-wheel drive is appropriate, like cruising.

Later this year, a plug-in hybrid variant will arrive, but local details are yet to be confirmed.

All variants come with heated seating, a new 10.25-inch instrument screen, the brand's newest operating system Uconnect 5, automatic LED headlights, and safety equipment like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Stepping up to the $83,950 Limited variant nets buyers a better nine-speaker sound system, ambient interior lighting, and window shades in the second row. A surround view camera and auto high-beam are included too.

The top-spec Overland, for $98,450, gets an upgraded 4x4 system, using Jeep's Quadra-Trac II system over the first version, with air lift suspension and other conveniences like a power tailgate.

Both the Night Eagle and Limited cost $4800 less than equivalent grades of the seven-seat Grand Cherokee L. However there is no Overland for the L, only the flagship Summit Reserve that tops out at $115,950.
