MG’s next big thing has been confirmed.
The Chinese brand will bring a seven-seat SUV in 2025 to plug the gap in its Australian line-up and we’ve created a digital rendering of what it could look like.
Senior Product and Strategy Manager Akshat Ahuja confirmed the arrival of the family focused SUV to CarsGuide earlier this year.
“This is something we know is extremely important for our market and the demand from the customers point of view and competition point of view,” he said
“So we are definitely working on this project and in 2025 we would have the MG seven-seat SUV in the market as well along with the other new project that we are going to launch.”
Details of the seven-seater are scarce, but it’s likely MG will borrow a lot from its sister brand Roewe.
The Roewe RX9 is a seven-seat SUV in China and brings a more luxury focused interior.
Our digital image borrows its styling from the new MG HS applied to the same overall proportions of the Roewe RX9.
It features a sleek design with a curvy bonnet and a large front grille along with dynamic headlights and big alloy wheels.
MG Australia has said the seven-seat SUV won’t have any off-road capabilities and will be more aligned with the Kia Sorento than the tough Ford Everest.
The RX9 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes 178kW and 392Nm matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission
MG has confirmed the new seven-seat SUV will come with petrol power initially, but hybrid and other power sources are under evaluation.
“To start with we’ll have the ICE variant, but you know, we are always evaluating more powertrains to make it better, more powerful variants. They’re all under evaluation for now,” said Ahuja.
“Yes, it's a seven-seat SUV and it has a traditional engine, but there will be a few more variants down the line, which we will confirm.”
MG could dive into its parts bin to produce a conventional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid variant.
The new MG3 small hatchback now comes with a hybrid set-up, which uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to pump out 155kW. Claimed fuel use is just 4.3L/100km.
The new mid-size HS SUV has been revealed and its plug-in power plant combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a potent electric motor to make a combined 223kW, which is about 34kW more than the current HS plug-in hybrid.
It uses a 24.7kWh lithium-ion battery that provides an electric-only driving range of up to 120km.
Price for the new seven-seater is still a mystery, but there are hints at where it might start.
MG has found great success by undercutting the Japanese and Korean car makers, but its recent MG3 has been hit with a significant price rise — especially in hybrid form — bringing it more into line with big name competitors, and the new HS is likely to follow suit.
The new MG seven-seat family SUV is likely to start at less than $50,000 (before on-road costs), which will undercut the popular Kia Sorento that starts at $50,680).
MG has an ace up its sleeve, though.
The Chinese company recently announced a 10 year/250,000km warranty for all its vehicles, which beats any guarantee on the market.
