2022 Range Rover price and features: Plug-in hybrid and flagship SV models added to BMW X7, Audi Q8, Mercedes-Benz GLS rival's range

The Range Rover SV is available in standard and long-wheelbase guise in Australia.

Range Rover has beaten its luxury SUV rivals to the punch by being the first upper-large SUV offered in Australia with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

With all of its rivals available in petrol or diesel guise, the Range Rover P440e will carve out a niche all its own when deliveries commence in the second half of the year.

There are two new plug-in hybrid variants combining a six-cylinder petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery and electric motor – the 324kW/620Nm P440e and the more powerful 375kW/700Nm P510e.

Priced from $229,200 before on-road costs, the P440e SE slots in as the third most affordable Range Rover variant in Australia, sitting above the D300 SE ($220,200) and P400 SE ($225,500).

The P510e is available in HSE and Autobiography guise priced from $262,400 and $292,900 respectively.

Range Rover says it managed to squeeze more electric driving range out of the powertrain than it initially expected. The brand was aiming for up to 100km on the WLTP cycle, but the PHEV models provide 113km of range, which translates to a “real-world” range of 88km.

The company says that’s enough to ensure Range Rover owners can complete 75 per cent of their journeys in pure electric mode.

None of its rivals – think the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Lexus LX, Audi Q8, Aston Martin DBX and Bentley Bentayga – have a PHEV powertrain, so the closest thing to a rival would be the Porsche Cayenne PHEV models which have a range of 47km.

Range Rover has also promised a full electric version in 2023.

Range Rover has also confirmed three versions of the flagship SV for Australia. Two standard-wheelbase versions are available, including the 3.0-litre 258kW turbo-diesel D350 from $341,300. For buyers after a bit more grunt, there’s also the BMW-sourced 390kW 4.4-litre V8 in the P530 priced from $347,900.

A long-wheelbase version of the P530 adds a hefty $43,900 to the price of the standard SV V8, ensuring it tops the whole Range Rover range at $391,800.

Customisation is the name of the game with the SV and Range Rover says it can be configured in more than 1.6 million combinations.

The SV is differentiated from the rest of the line-up by unique front bumper and grille designs, different roundels on the side gills and tailgate and optional 23-inch wheels.

A two-tone colour interior is available and Range Rover has created two distinct design themes – luxury-focused SV Serenity, and “stealthy” SV Intrepid – for SV personalisation.

The long-wheelbase SV is available with the four-seat “Signature Suite” which includes a console that runs the length of the cabin and houses an electrically powered table, electrically deployable cupholders and an integrated refrigerator with SV-etched Dartington crystal glassware.

It’s also available with 13.1-inch rear entertainment screens that are the largest ever fitted to a Range Rover.
