Mitsubishi Australia has released the Pajero Sport large SUV’s expanded line-up for MY22, with a sporty GSR flagship grade added alongside the cheaper option of a 4x2 set-up for some versions.

The carryover variants have become $1450-1500 dearer, at $48,940, $53,690 and $59,190 plus on-road costs for the 4x4 GLX five-seater, 4x4 GLS seven-seater, and 4x4 Exceed seven-seater, respectively.

Either way, the new 4x2 versions of the entry-level GLX (five seat) and mid-range GLS (seven seat) are priced from $43,940 and $48,940 respectively, while the fresh 4x4-only GSR (seven seats) costs $60,940.

Of note, 4x2 versions miss out on Mitsubishi’s Super Select II four-wheel-drive system, rear differential lock and off-road drive modes of their 4x4 counterparts.

But the big news is the GSR, which applies a black finish to its bumper inserts, grille, ‘Pajero Sport’ bonnet lettering, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and panel, rear spoiler and ‘GSR’ tailgate badging to the previously flagship Exceed. It’s available with white or black paintwork.

As for the rest of the range, lumbar adjustment has been added to the driver’s seat, while the GLS and Exceed are once again fitted with a body-colour rear spoiler.

No matter the variant, the Isuzu MU-X, Ford Everest and Toyota Fortuner rival is powered by a 133kW/430Nm 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which is mated to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
